Former cast member Tracy Morgan, recovering from a car accident that left him critically injured last year, is among those slated to help to ring in the 41st season of NBC’s Saturday Night Live. The new season kicks off October 3 with Miley Cyrus returning as host for a third time. Amy Schumer steps up to the plate October 10 for her hosting debut, and Morgan is back in Studio 8H on October 17 for his second time as host.

In a move to dress up its QVC business, Liberty Interactive is hoping to purchase ecommerce company Zulily, which focuses on clothing and lifestyle products, for $2.4 billion in cash and stock. According to Liberty’s proposal, Zulily will remain a separate brand and collaborate heavily with QVC.

ABC Family is headed to Budapest and London this week for production on new thriller series Guilt. The drama is about a young American woman in London who becomes the prime suspect in the savage murder of her roommate is written, created and exec-produced by Kathryn Price and Nichole Millard (both of The Game Plan); Stephen McPherson will serve as an executive producer. Cast includes Katrina Law (Arrow), Daisy Head (The Syndicate) and Billy Zane (Titanic).

Showtime acquired the rights to author Mat Johnson’s novel Loving Day for development as a comedy series. The semi-autobiographical book probes the modern life of a biracial man.

NEW SERIES

Family thriller Home has found a new home. Originally developed at Fox, the series from writer Aron Eli Coleite and Jerry Bruckheimer TV, has landed a pilot order at TNT.

Univision Network’s latest telenovela, Muchacha Italiana Viene a Casarse (Italian Girl Comes to Wed), premieres Tuesday, August 25, at 7p. The new story takes viewers to Italy and follows a heroic Italian girl who accepts a marriage proposal far from her native land in order to save her dying sister.
 
Adventurer Sean Duggan treks to the most remote stretches of the globe in search of mysterious creatures that have adapted to extreme weather and environments in Natural Born Monsters (formerly titled How Weather Created A Monster), a new Weather Channel original series premiering Monday, September 21, at 10p.

RETURNING SERIES

truTV and Tumblr are upping the ante for the second season of Hack My Life. The Hack My Life Tumblr Challenge shares solutions to the most personal, mind-boggling everyday problems – and the best hacks will be featured during the "Tumblr’s Hack Mail" segment of the show, which returns tonight (August 18) at 9p.

Comedy Central is bringing back stand-up series The Half Hour for a fourth season on Saturday, August 22 at midnight and 12:30a. Filmed at The Royale in Boston, the new season will feature sets from Liza Treyger, Hampton Yount, Tone Bell, Michelle Buteau, Sean Donnelly and others.

Discovery is continuing its Fast N’ Loud ways on the net’s themed Motor Mondays with the return of the series on Monday, September 7, at 9p. Richard Rawlings, the motor mastermind behind Gas Monkey Garage, and mechanical prodigy Aaron Kaufman are back to scour the country in search of rare rides.

Fox is checking back in to Hotel Hell. The network ordered a third season of the Gordon Ramsay-hosted series that follows the celeb chef and hospitality expert as he works his triage on failing establishments. Hotel Hell is produced by One Potato Two Potato; Ben Adler, Patricia Llewellyn and Ramsay are executive producers.

One giant leap for MTV. The network’s iconic Moonman is getting a makeover for the 2015 Video Music Awards, airing live August 30 at 9p and hosted by Miley Cyrus. Designer Jeremy Scott helped with the redesign, which includes a color burst and a peace sign necklace.

Fresh Dressed, director Sacha Jenkins’ chronicle of hip hop and urban fashion, and their influence on pop culture, will premiere as a CNN Films broadcast with limited commercial interruptions on Thursday, September 3, at 9p on CNN. Produced by Peter Bittenbender, Nasir Jones, and Marcus Clarke for Mass Appeal, Fresh Dressed features interviews with Dapper Dan, Pharrell Williams, April Walker, Jeff Tweedy, Russell Simmons and Sean “Puffy” Combs, among others. The CNN Films and Mass Appeal co-production will be exclusively presented by Volkswagen

Ovation kicks off season 5 of original series The Art Of on September 6 at 8p. Among topics covered this season will be how meditation gurus have turned relaxation into a fine art; how various styles of dance have taken shape; and how Japanese, Chinese and Italian chefs approach the art of noodle-making differently.

AXS TV is giving a Whole Lotta Love to Led Zepplin on September 7 with nine hours of concert footage hosted by Jason Bonham, musician and son of Led Zeppelin’s late drummer John Bonham. The TV event marks the 47th anniversary of band’s first live show.

Starz is enlisting multiplatform sampling to help stir interest in its upcoming comedy block. The first two eps of Blunt Talk and the entire six-ep first season of Survivor’s Remorse were made available beginning August 15 and will continue through August 25 via select U.S. cable, satellite and telco affiliates, Starz.com, Starz On Demand and the Starz Play app, among other outlets. In addition, Survivor’s Remorse exec producer LeBron James and Blunt Talk star Patrick Stewart are sampling their respective series premieres on Facebook for a limited time prior to the linear season premieres on Saturday, August 22, at 9p.

CASTING

Iliza Shlesinger will host TBS’ upcoming relationship-based game show Separation Anxiety, which launches in the fourth quarter. Shlesinger, who scored the win during NBC’s Last Comic Standing, recently starred in the her own Netflix comedy special, Freezing Hot.

Men At Work alum Michael Cassidy has a new lead role opposite Wyatt Cenac in TBS comedy pilot The Group. Series, from Conan O’Brien’s Conaco and Warner Horizon TV, centers on a support group for people who believe they’ve been abducted by aliens.

Endemol Shine U.K. has taken a controlling stake in London-based animation house Simon’s Cat. The latter is the brains behind the Simon’s Cat digital comedy series, which has 650 million YouTube views and counting.

RATINGS

Fox’s Teen Choice Awards scored with its target demographic on Sunday, ranking as the No. 1 program of the night in teens, according to preliminary Nielsen ratings. The event scored a 2.8 rating with total viewers, and 1.8 among A18-49, even with its score last summer.

The television premiere of Disney’s Descendants was seen by 12.2 million Total Viewers, according to Live+7 data. That makes the live-action story of the offspring of some of Disney’s most devious villains the No. 5 cable movie of all time and nearly doubling its Live+SD delivery. The movie will air again tonight (Tuesday) on Disney Channel.

Sunday’s finale of Food Network Star delivered a 1.2 rating among A25-54, a 10 percent lift over the prior season’s finale. The series’ eleventh cycle posted an overall 1.0 rating among A25-54, a 15 percent rise above last year.

Spike’s original documentary, I Am Chris Farley delivered record ratings for the network on Monday, August 10, in the 9-11p slot. With three-day playback, the tribute to the comedic actor drew 1.5 million viewers and a 1.0 rating A18-49, establishing it as the most watched documentary in Spike’s history, according to Nielsen data.

John Lansing will depart his post as president/CEO of CTAM this fall to become CEO of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, an independent federal government agency that oversees all U.S. civilian international news broadcasting, headquartered in Washington, D.C. 

CNN elevated Dana Bash from her role as chief congressional correspondent to chief political correspondent. Bash will lead the network’s coverage of the Republican Presidential bid and will continue her coverage of Capitol Hill. She also earns a seat questioning candidates at the Republican primary debate in Simi Valley, CA, in September.

ESPN inked a multiyear contract extension with John Saunders, who joined the network in 1986. Saunders will continue to boost ESPN’s college football coverage, anchoring sister net ABC’s regular season Saturday programming, among other roles.

Univision Local Media promoted Sabina Widmann-Hernandez to VP/GM and director of sales of Univision stations in San Diego, California.

Bill Dallman has been named VP/news director of CBS-owned stations KCBS-TV and KCAL-TV in LA. Dallman is returning to local television news after having spent the past two years as VP of news at Fox Sports 1.
