Good morning. It’s Thursday August 13, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The NBA schedule got networks off and running on the programming plans for the new season with ESPN/ABC, TNT and NBA TV all revealing coverage details. TNT tips off the 2015-16 season on Oct. 27 with a doubleheader pitting Cavaliers/Bulls at 8p, followed by the Pelicans/Warriors at 10:30p. Overall, the network features a 53-game slate that includes 10 appearances by the Warriors, Bulls and Clippers, along with 18 Thursday night NBA doubleheaders during the regular season. In addition, the channel offers a primetime doubleheader on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Jan. 18, along with the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge on Feb. 12, State Farm All-Star Saturday Night on Feb. 13, and the 65th NBA All-Star Game from on Feb. 14. ABC and ESPN will combine to televise 90 regular season games between them this season, including the new NBA Saturday Night on ABC, which launches January 23 at 8:30p with the Cavaliers/Bulls. Programming tips off on Oct. 28 with a doubleheader pitting the Spurs/Thunder at 8p, followed by the Timberwolves/Lakers at 10:30p. The annual Christmas Day slate launches on ESPN at noon with the Pelicans/Heat, followed by Bulls/Thunder and Cavaliers/Warriors on ABC and wrapping up with Spurs/Rockets at 8p and Clippers/Lakers at 10:30p on ESPN again. Finally, NBA TV is set to offer fans nine appearances by the Warriors, Cavaliers and Spurs this season, with live game coverage beginning Oct. 31 with Warriors/Pelicans and Kings/Clippers battles. NBA TV’s regular season coverage will also feature special programming on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day that includes the Magic/Hawks. Colin Cowherd’s move to FOX Sports is now official. The company announced that the former-ESPN personality is joining FOX Sports and Premiere Networks next month as a face of their television, radio and digital platforms. Cowherd will host a three-hour sports talk program dubbed The Herd starting Sept. 8 from noon to 3p that will concurrently on FOX Sports 1 and the FOX Sports Radio Network. In addition, Cowherd will join the FOX NFL Kickoff crew, with the show shifting from FOX Sports 1 to FOX on Sundays this season at 11a. The move means that Mike Francesa will now move to FOX Sports 2 and FOX Sports GO where he will run weekdays from 1-6p, according to FOX.
Ryan Seacrest is hitting late night for NBC’s coverage of the 2016 Olympic Games. NBC Olympics announced Seacrest as host of its late night coverage for next summer’s event, having previously tapped him as a correspondent for the 2012 London Games. “The late night atmosphere will be electric,” said Jim Bell, Executive Producer, NBC Olympics. “And we’re thrilled to have Ryan Seacrest in the middle of it all capturing Rio’s unique flavor, talking to Olympic athletes, and telling the stories of the day.”
The NFL is looking for a primetime play for its traditional Super Bowl media day, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The pre-game event is expected to be shifted away from daylight hours and held the Monday night before the Super Bowl.
HBO scored big with the return of Hard Knocks. The Texans’ dedicated season kicked off with 826,000 viewers, according to Nielsen. That is up 34% over last year’s numbers for the debut ep and marks the best opening night for the franchise since 2010 NY Jets debut episode hit 870,000 viewers.
ESPN announced that its 2016 Big Monday men’s college basketball schedule, which offers a weekly doubleheader with teams from the ACC and the Big 12, will tip off on Jan. 4 and run through Feb. 29. The showcase will see the ACC in the 7p window, with the Big 12 at 9p. The action opens with the new year featuring North Carolina/Florida State and Oklahoma/Kansas in week one, and include other matchups such as Oklahoma/Iowa State on Jan. 18, North Carolina/Louisville on Feb. 1, NC State/Virginia on Feb. 15 and Iowa State/West Virginia on Feb. 22.
FIFA is tapping the services of Dr. Francois Carrard to lead reform for the organization, naming him as the independent chairman of the 2016 FIFA Reform Committee. As Director General of the International Olympic Committee, Dr Carrard guided the IOC through its own slate of reforms following the scandal for for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002. Over the next six months, the committee will look for reform proposals that will be put before the extraordinary elective Congress on Feb. 26, 2016.
NBCSN and Telemundo carry a battle between Chelsea and Manchester City on Sunday at 11a. Coverage will see Everton and U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper Tim Howard join the broadcast booth, teaming with play-by-play announcer Arlo White to call the match. Meanwhile, NBC Deportes is adding three upcoming Watford F.C. games to its lineup, featuring Mexican Defender Miguel Layun. Coverage beings Saturday with the Watford/West Bromwich Albion fixture at 9:55a. Throughout the 2015-2016 Premier League season, NBC UNIVERSO will air 100 matches of clubs from around the League.
The PGA of America is doubling down in the Chicago area, naming Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club and Kemper Lakes Golf Club of Kildeer, Illinois, as hosts of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in June of 2017 and 2018, respectively. “Our commitment to our partners at KPMG and the LPGA remains strong, as is our resolve to share this Championship with the nation’s finest golf courses and their local communities,” said PGA of America President Derek Sprague. “Both Olympia Fields Country Club and Kemper Lakes Golf Club are well-versed in major championship golf. We believe that both will build off each other’s momentum and deliver two magnificent championships befitting a world-class destination like Chicago.”
CSN Chicago saw a six-year high on Tuesday night for the Cubs/Brewers telecast. The matchup notched a 5.1 in the market, with around 176,000 homes tuning in. That marks the highest Cubs game rating on the network since the Cubs hosted Philadelphia on Aug. 11, 2009. This season’s average is pulling a 3.13, up 109% over last year’s final numbers.
We seem to have lost a “1” in yesterday’s edition. Showtime’s upcoming documentary Play It Forward, premieres on Oct. 16, not the 6th.

EA Sports announced that Patrick Kane has been iced. The company had previously announced that Kane, along with fellow Blackhawk Jonathan Toews, would grace the cover of the upcoming ES Sports NHL 16 videogame. Now with Kane being investigated for an alleged rape, the company stated that “In light of an ongoing investigation involving Patrick Kane, he will no longer be a spokesperson for the launch of EA Sports NHL 16. He will not appear on the EA Sports NHL 16 cover nor participate in other EA Sports NHL 16 promotional activies.”
CLC is expanding its university-branded footwear program ahead of the new football season. Following last year’s launch of Nike collegiate footwear, CLC is now expanding the program to 13 schools with collections for: Alabama, Florida, Florida State University, Georgia, LSU, Michigan State, Ohio State. Oregon, Oklahoma, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas. and USC. In addition, adjustable hats, training hoodies and t-shirts will be designed in close partnership with each school licensing program.
Learfield Sports roped in University of Vermont as the latest school in its portfolio., That deal will see Learfield Sports represent the Catamounts through 2025 and marks the first time in school history that Vermont is outsourcing its comprehensive athletic rights. Vermont Sports Properties will operate as a property of Learfield Sports and manage every aspect of the comprehensive rights relationship that includes signage, digital, corporate sponsorships, hospitality, event marketing, radio play-by-play and coaches’ shows, and some television.
Social media benchmarking firm Shareablee reports that ESPN led a July ranking of the most socially engaged TV Networks in the country. ESPN was led by SportsCenter, and ranked number one with 66.7 million total actions across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.
The PGA TOUR announced that Perform secured the rights to build and operate the TOUR’s official web site for users in Japan in a deal that runs through 2017. That partnership includes design, layout, branding, advertising and sponsorship of the web site, which is now live. “We are delighted to be working with Perform, which has a proven track record for providing first class platforms for rights holders across the world,” said Luis Goicouria, Senior Vice President of Digital Platforms & Media Strategy for the PGA TOUR. “We look forward to partnering with Perform to provide golf fans in Japan with the very best PGA TOUR content to keep golf fans informed and entertained.”
