NBC Olympics saw live streaming for Rio 2016 break the one billion minute threshold, the first time the benchmark has been crossed for the Games. The tally of 1.05 billion minutes of live streaming via NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app is up 232% from the equivalent day in London. Meanwhile, the company reports that the Total Audience Delivery for Wednesday’s primetime coverage averaged a 16.5 household rating with 28.6 million viewers for the company. After six days, the NBC-only average primetime viewership is averaging 28.2 million viewers with a household rating of 15.5.
Turner Sports detailed plans for a new Monday night NBA series of games on TNT as part of its expanded 64-game schedule this coming season. The package will launch on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Jan. 16 with a doubleheader pitting the Cavaliers/Warriors at 8p followed by Thunder/clippers at 10:30p. Overall, TNT will televise 20 Thursday night and 10 Monday night NBA doubleheaders during the regular season with its schedule led by 10 appearances by the Warriors and Clippers, as well as nine appearances by the Cavaliers, the Knicks, Bulls, Celtics and Spurs. The network officially tips off the 2016-17 NBA regular season on Oct. 25, with a doubleheader Knicks/Cavaliers and Warriors/Spurs. In addition to its regular-season coverage, TNT will be the home of NBA All-Star Weekend’s signature events including the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge on Feb. 17, State Farm All-Star Saturday Night on Feb. 18, and the NBA All-Star Game on Feb. 19 in addition to more than 40 NBA Playoff games.
ABC and ESPN’s NBA docket will include more games than ever, anchored by 100 regular season games, with 82 set for ESPN, which generally includes NBA doubleheaders on Wednesday and Friday nights, and 18 games bound for ABC, highlighted by season two of NBA Saturday Primetime on ABC and the ABC NBA Sunday Showcase franchise. From January to April, ABC and ESPN will combine to televise NBA games four days per week. Opening week begins with a Oct. 26 doubleheader pitting the Thunder/76ers and Rockets/Lakers. The schedule will once again include five Christmas Day games and 13 appearances by the Warriors, 12 by the Bulls and 10 each by the Cavaliers, Celtics, Clippers and Thunder.
NBA TV’s coverage of the 2016-17 regular season tips off on Oct. 29 with the first of 32 doubleheaders this season, spotlighting the Pelicans/Spurs and Timberwolves/Kings. NBA TV Fan Night will make its season debut on Nov. 1, with the first of the Cavaliers three appearances on franchise.
Showtime’s upcoming documentary One & Done has a debut date, with the network announcing that the program will premiere on Oct. 21 at 9p. The project showcases NBA top pick Ben Simmons and his journey to the league.
MSG Networks announced that Brendan Burke will serve as the team’s new play-by-play announcer, replacing Howie Rose, for Islanders games this season. Burke will team with Butch Goring to call all the action for the 2016-17 Islanders campaign.
SiriusXM kicks off its coverage of the 2016-17 English Premier League soccer season tomorrow with talkSPORT’s live play-by-play broadcasts of multiple EPL matches each week throughout the season. Listeners will have access to games involving all 20 EPL clubs on SiriusXM FC (channel 85). The company will also debut a new show hosted by former Premier League striker Stan Collymore on Monday at 5p entitled. Call Collymore USA.

USA Today Sports launched the first-ever Rio Ad Meter Bracket today allowing fans to vote on the top 32 commercials featured during the Rio 2016 games at admeter.usatoday.com. The new take on its staple Super Bowl Ad Meter is sponsored by Adobe and will include new ads from Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, Mini, Chobani, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Visa, DeVry, Under Armour, Gillette, Nissan, Omega, CitiBank, BMW, Samsung, Gatorade, Bridgestone, Ralph Lauren, USA Swimming and others. “We know there are conversations happening around Olympic-themed ads, just like when USA TODAY Sports launched the Super Bowl Ad Meter 28 years ago,” said Dave Morgan, president of USA TODAY Sports Media Group. “The Olympic Games creates new heroes not only in competition but throughout three weeks of television advertisements from Mary Lou Retton to Carl Lewis to Michael Phelps and the list goes on. This will bring a new form of competition to the games for brands and advertisers.”
NBC Sports Group Chairman Mark Lazarus told reporters that the company is hitting virtually all its business and viewership goals for the Rio Games, noting that since the event started, it had sold $30 million in additional advertising time on top of the reported $1.2 billion in ad revenues that company previously announced. “This will be our most economically successful games in history,” he noted.
The Seahawks can continue using its “12th Man” moniker, but it will come with a price. According to KXXV, the NFL team and Texas A&M inked a five year agreement that allows the NFL franchise to continue using the nickname in exchange for a fee, although this time around, the Seahawks can no longer use it on its Ring of Honor at Seahawks Stadium not reference it in social media.
ESPN.com launched a new vertical dedicated to the WWE and professional wrestling, offering fans match results, features, wrestler profiles, rankings, international wrestling, video and more. Contributors will include Brian Campbell, Arash Markazi, Darren Rovell and KC Joyner. The vertical will also be the home to Cheap Heat, Peter Rosenberg’s professional wrestling podcast that launched last January, and growing to average 400,000 downloads per month already. . “Professional wrestling fans are sports fans who are mobile, global and passionate,” said Chad Millman, ESPN VP, Editorial Director, Domestic Digital Content. “That’s the audience we’re in the business of serving."
ESPN also announced that the World Cup of Hockey 2016 will see Scott Burnside, Craig Custance, Pierre LeBrun and Joe McDonald oversee coverage for ESPN, with each focusing on a team or teams and offer daily updates across ESPN digital and social media platforms. In addition, beginning in training camp, #LevyAndMelrose (Steve Levy, Barry Melrose) video segments highlighting workouts, pre-tournament games and the tournament will be featured regularly.
VR company Laduma is partnering with the LA Galaxy for a multi-year content and marketing agreement that will see the duo launch a six-part series of fully-immersive 360-degree 3D VR experiences featuring six players: Nigel de Jong, Ashley Cole, Gyasi Zardes, Jelle Van Damme, Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane bringing fans into the LA Galaxy locker room on match day, and more.
Allied eSports announced a strategic investment partnership Esports Arena designed to build new Esports Arena locations throughout North America, with the first location to open in Oakland and expansion of Esports Arena’s broadcast capabilities in its Santa Ana location. The companies will also plan and coordinate future tournaments and leagues in each other’s venues.
