Good morning. It’s Thursday August 4, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

With Olympic competition now underway, the IOC agreed to a quintet of new sports for Tokyo 2020, announcing the return of baseball/softball and the additions of karate, skateboard, sports climbing and surfing to the lineup. Plans call for staging the skateboarding and sports climbing events to take place in temporary venues installed in urban settings in a move to grow younger audiences. The inclusion of the new sports will add 18 events and 474 athletes, with equal numbers of women and men for all sports except baseball/softball.

“We want to take sport to the youth. With the many options that young people have, we cannot expect any more that they will come automatically to us. We have to go to them,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “Tokyo 2020’s balanced proposal fulfils all of the goals of the Olympic Agenda 2020 recommendation that allowed it. Taken together, the five sports are an innovative combination of established and emerging, youth-focused events that are popular in Japan and will add to the legacy of the Tokyo Games.”

"This is a game-changing moment for Surfing,” said ISA President, Fernando Aguerre. “We are already seeing increased popularity of the sport across the world and the Olympic Games will provide an incredible platform to further showcase Surfing and its core values. With its unique and modern blend of sport performance, style and youth culture,Surfing will help deliver something special to the Games.”

ON THE AIR

ESPN laid out programming plans for the World Cup of Hockey 2016 with the action starting Sept. 17 group play between Team USA/Team Europe on ESPN2 at 3:30p. Team Czech Republic/Team Canada will then face off in primetime that night on ESPNEWS at 8p. The Semifinals begin Sept. 24, at 7p on ESPN2 with the second Semifinal on Sunday at 1p on ESPN. Game one of the best-of-three Final begins Sept. 27, at 8p on ESPN followed by game two on Sept. 29 at 8p and game three on Oct. 1 at 7p with both games on ESPN2. Steve Levy and analyst Barry Melrose will call all of Team USA’s games as well as the Semifinals and Final. Play-by-play commentator John Buccigross will call the remaining action alongside analyst Kevin Weekes.

Just ahead of the NFL season, NFL Media and DISH Network mended fences with a new carriage agreement for NFL Network and NFL RedZone. Distribution of both networks has now been restored on DISH’s satellite distribution system, and both services will be added to Sling TV in time for the NFL regular season this fall. “We are pleased to see NFL Network and NFL RedZone back on DISH,” said Hans Schroeder, Senior Vice President, Media Strategy, Business Development & Sales for the NFL. “This has been a thoughtful negotiation that resulted in a great outcome for our fans. DISH is an important distributor of NFL Network and NFL RedZone, and we are excited to expand our distribution to new fans on the fast-growing Sling TV platform.”

NFL analyst Tom Jackson made his retirement official, and will end his 29-year run on ESPN this week at Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement weekend in Canton. “I have been blessed in my adult life to work for two companies, the Denver Broncos and ESPN, to do two things that I love  play football and talk about football,” said Jackson.

Bellator MMA locked in new deals via multimedia entertainment studio Electus with broadcasters in Australia (Spike), Japan (AbemaTV), Russia (Match), China (LeEco), Africa (MBC), South Korea (KBSN), Benelux (Spike) and Bulgaria (bTV). "Bellator continues to enjoy explosive growth overseas where we are now in over 140 countries and have entered into numerous foreign event partnerships," said Eddie Dalva, Executive Vice President, Content and Program Enterprises, Viacom Music and Entertainment and Bellator MMA.

In other new deals, the Sun Belt Conference will now see football and basketball games throughout the 2016-17 season run on the American Sports Network. While games on ASN will be broadcasts on “over-the-air” and cable affiliates, contests will also be available without blackout restrictions on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. The partnership, made possible through a sublicense agreement with ESPN, allows for a minimum of eight football games and a minimum of 10 basketball games from the Sun Belt to be aired through ASN.

Starting Sept. 3, ESPN Radio will roll out a new fall weekend lineup with a focus on the 2016 college football and NFL seasons, adding two new programs to the slate, including the three-hour McNabb & Custer, hosted Donovan McNabb and Brian Custer starting Sept. 11 at 10p. During the football season, espnW presents: The Trifecta with Spain, Jane & Kate will be on hiatus with its hosts instead working on the weekend schedule. Weekend Observations with Stu & Spain, hosted by Jon “Stugotz” Weiner and Spain, will debut, with McManus co-hosting Sunday’s Operation Football w/ Randy Scott and Field Yates, while Fagan will continue hosting Will & Kate with Will Cain.
