Good morning. It’s Tuesday August 2, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

FOX Sports formally unveiled its plans for Skip Bayless as the company’s newest personality, as the former ESPNer will host a new sports talk show on FS1 starting Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 10a.  Additional details will be announced later this month. “Skip Bayless is one of the most incisive opinionists in all of media,” said Jamie Horowitz, President, FOX Sports National Networks. “He’s equal parts fearless and relentless, and his rebellious spirit is a tremendous addition to the lineup of talent and shows that we are building for FS1.”

ON THE AIR

Sunday’s IndyCar Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio, simulcast on NBCSN and CNBC, delivered a 0.62 overnight rating to the company to rank as the best-ever IndyCar overnight rating for NBC Sports Group since acquiring IndyCar rights in 2009. Through six races on NBCSN to date (not including Mid-Ohio), the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series is averaging 433,000 viewers, up 16% through six races in 2015.

Speaking of NBC, Angela Hucles and Kerith Burke will join NBC Olympics’ coverage of women’s soccer and women’s basketball, respectively, during the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Meanwhile, Ros Gold-Onwude, who works Golden State Warriors telecasts for CSN Bay Area, will handle sideline reporting for Team USA men’s basketball games.

Speaking of the Olympics, Telemundo Deportes locked in its schedule for the Games, announcing a heavy dose of soccer, boxing, track and field, volleyball, beach volleyball, basketball, swimming and more for the network. The slate begins tomorrow with women’s soccer on NBC Universo, pitting Brazil/China at 3p, followed by US/ New Zealand at 6p with more soccer through the Opening Ceremony. Saturday will see boxing at 11a on Telemundo, along with volleyball (both beach and traditional), while NBC Universo opens with men’s basketball (US/China) at 6p.

Around the dial, Univision Deportes served up its broadcast plans for the anticipated 2016/2017 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League tournament across UDN and Galavision network. The two channels will broadcast all group stage matches of the Champions League tournament starting today and running through Oct. 10, followed by the quarterfinals from February 21-March 2, 2017.

MLB Network’s August game schedule is now set to feature at least six days of live baseball per week, beginning with the Red Sox at the Seattle Mariners tonight at 10p. Overall, five MLB Network Showcase games will be featured in August, including a primetime game between the Red Sox and Dodgers on Sunday at 7p.

SiriusXM announced the schedule for its annual SiriusXM College Football Camp Tour, with coverage starting today at Louisville (1p) and Clemson (5p) on College Sports Nation. Each two-hour show will be hosted by SiriusXM’s experts and insiders with an all-time high of campuses that will be profiled.

NBC Olympics detailed its promotional plans for the 2016 Rio Olympics on social media, with content set to include a GIF torch relay on Twitter via @NBCOlympics and incorporated into GIFs posted on social media accounts from networks and shows under the umbrella. In addition to the previously announced influencers and partnerships, the company had athletes jam with Flula, take photos in a high school yearbook throwback-themed booth, try samba and more. NBC Olympics also teams up with Snaps for a custom emoji/GIF keyboard that offers more than 60 options.

Bud Light is introducing all-new custom cans for its 27 NFL team partners ahead of the new season. Beverages will be draped in team colors, feature its logo and features localized, signature sayings that “every team’s fans will recognize and embrace.” The activation of its “Beer With Your Team On It” campaign can be seen here.

The Collegiate Licensing Company, the licensing affiliate of IMG College, extended its partnership agreement with Gonzaga University to continue managing its trademark licensing program. Gonzaga and CLC, who have partnered since 1998, with the new eight-year agreement running through 2024.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Facebook tackles the Olympics with new Olympic profile frames, MSQRD filters and other ways for people to get into the Olympic spirit. Other options include a personalized news feed unit with the ability to click through to a page with a mix of dynamic Olympic content.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

Perform Media picked up Alex Marvez for Sporting News. He joins SN from FOX Sports and FOX Sports 1 where he was the network’s senior NFL writer and reporter since 2007. “Sporting News is absolutely delighted to have Alex Marvez on board as NFL Insider,” said Steve Miller, editorial director at Sporting News. “He knows the league and its major players inside and out. The reportage and analysis he will bring will quickly become must-reads for the discerning NFL fan.”

The PBR inked a three-year partnership with Ticket Galaxy to serve as the PBR’s exclusive secondary ticket partner for events on the PBR’s major league Built Ford Tough Series and its expansion qualifying tour, the BlueDEF Tour. The deal begins with the PBR Major event in Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on August 19-20. In addition, Ticket Galaxy will provide premier access to the 10-day, PBR Finals Week in Las Vegas featuring the BlueDEF Finals debuting at the South Point Arena & Equestrian Center on October 29-31, and the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals at T-Mobile Arena on November 2-6.

ESPORTS

Xbox laid down plans for announce the Gears eSports Pro Circuit for Gears of War 4 with The Coalition. The new eSports plan allows players to compete in marquee live open events around the world operated by MLG and Gfinity for a starting $1,000,000 in cash prizes. Players worldwide can earn “Gears Pro Points” by competing in regional MLG GameBattles to qualify for the international circuit open LAN events that take place every 1-2 months from the Gears of War 4 game launch in October 2016 to July 2017. This year’s international circuit includes the likes of London, Paris, Columbus, Mexico City, and Las Vegas beginning with Nov. 25-27 in Columbus.

Valve unveiled changes to the competitive format for Dota 2 in 2017, according to ESPN, that will kick in following the conclusion of this year’s International. Overall, Valve will cut the number of majors from three to two.

Go To Team is getting deeper into the eSports space, naming 15-year-old Brendon Patrick Bryant III to its eSports division where he will serve as a consultant for the company. “Brendon is an engaged teenager with intimate knowledge of traditional and digital eSports. His knowledge of the gaming world is indispensable to our success,” says Go To Team’s Managing Partner/COO, Shawn Moffatt.

David Duernberger was hired as director of stadium operations for Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Falcons and MLS’ Atlanta United. He will be charged with the management and direction of the engineering, technical services and building services functions for the stadium.
