Disney CEO Bob Iger is turning to familiar faces to assist with company strategy. Tom Staggs, former COO of Disney, and Kevin Mayer, former Chairman of Direct-to-Consumer & International, have been enlisted to advise Iger on the future of Disney’s legacy TV businesses as streaming upends the industry. It’s a part-time gig for the one-time Disney CEO contenders, who are now co-CEO’s of Candle Media.
Warner Bros. Discovery is revamping its Advertising Sales organization. The shift will enable ad agency partners to work with dedicated WBD Sales leaders and teams that will provide direct access to WBD’s portfolio of brands under one umbrella. The new strategy also brings WBD’s full suite of Advanced Advertising Sales solutions across the company’s linear and digital platforms together. “Over the past year, we have been listening to our clients and partners and have seen firsthand what is delivering real value for them and great performance for us,” said Jon Steinlauf, Chief US Advertising Sales Officer. “This new structure will allow us to deliver what matters most for all – creating a single and seamless interface into the full world of WBD.” The new agency-focused teams will be led by Marybeth Strobel and Greg Regis.
The Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement is conducting a study to examine the future role and value of panels for TV and cross-platform measurement in the US. “Consumer research panels have played a critical part of the television measurement ecosystem for decades,” said Jon Watts, Managing Director, CIMM. “However, the growing use of different datasets to support measurement, the shift of viewing to connected devices and increasingly sophisticated modeling techniques have led many industry participants to question the value of panels. At the same time, we’re seeing a proliferation of new panels for calibration and other purposes and steady improvements in panel technologies. This project aims to align the industry around a clear understanding and common vision for the future role and value of panels in the US TV market.” The study will be led by Joan FitzGerald, Data ImpacX, and Jonathan Steuer, Anonymous Media Research.
Sixteen-year-old entrepreneur, philanthropist and shelter pet advocate Sir Darius Brown has joined NBCUniversal Local’s Clear The Shelters pet adoption and donation campaign as an ambassador and shelter advocate for Hill’s Pet Nutrition, the national sponsor of the monthlong initiative that begins today.
All bets are off. Fox Corp. and Flutter are closing down betting platform Fox Bet. Flutter will retain ownership of PokerStars and FanDuel, while Fox keeps use of the Fox and Fox Bet brands. Fox is planning the launch of a new Fox Super 6 game later in 2023.
Vice Media has completed its sale to a group of former lenders led by Fortress Investment Group, Soros Fund Management and Monroe Capital. “With the support of our investor group, we now have the resources to strengthen our business, our partnerships and our content creation across all platforms,” said the company’s co-CEOs, Bruce Dixon and Hozefa Lokhandwala. Vice filed for bankruptcy in May, and announced the deal in June.
TelevisaUnivision reported gains in price and volume that beat industry trends for upfront deals, with high single digit percentage volume gains. Streaming platform ViX also saw “significant growth.” The insurance, auto and telco categories led the charge, with insurance up more than 100% from last year.
STRIKE UPDATES
The writers’ and actors’ strikes could have a major impact on the advertising industry, according to a report from MediaRadar. Research showed that talk shows, soap operas, and sitcoms – genres dark during the strikes – accounted for 9%, or $2.36 billion, of TV ad expenditure in the first half of 2023. “TV broadcasters could be hit hard if this strike continues for many more months,” said Todd Krizelman, CEO, MediaRadar. “Lucrative late night talk shows specifically have been off the air already for a couple months. Soon, fall programming, including talk shows, soap operas, and primetime sitcoms should air. However, that is likely to be delayed since they rely on writers throughout the summer for scripts.”
Amid backlash over its interim agreements, which allow independent projects to proceed during the strike as long as they agree to the eventual deal with studios, SAG-AFTRA issued a message to members. “The Interim Agreement gives many of our journeyman performers and crews the opportunity to pay their rent and feed their families,” said the guild. “This approach maintains our strength, solidarity and upper hand with the AMPTP until they yield to the deal we deserve. The Interim Agreement is not a waiver. To be clear, it is a contract that includes all terms and conditions for producers looking to employ our members on their specific independent productions.”
