07/21/16: FIBA sets up screen throughout Americas; ESPN reshuffles college talent; Visa breaks borders

Good morning. It’s Thursday July 21, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

FIBA is taking its presence to the next level with the launch of FIBA Americas TV, a new channel offering international basketball play to the US and Latin America for the first time on its own dedicated TV network. THEMA-Alterna’TV, a Canal+ Company, is launching the branded network to cable operators in stateside and marks the first time officially sanctioned games from FIBA leagues that include teams from the US, Argentina, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Venezuela, Canada, Uruguay and Panama. The network will have a pool of around 1,852 games per season, including FIBA Championship games such as FIBA Americas, Centrobasket, the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, the COCABA and South American Championships and Youth Olympics.

“Basketball is one of the world’s most popular sports, appealing to millennials and mature viewers alike, and transcending language and geography,” said Patrick Rivet, Senior Vice President Distribution at THEMA. “Our content strategy for acquiring Alterna’TV was to capitalize on its relationships and knowledge of the U.S. and Latin America market in an effort to create complementary programming offerings and greater efficiencies with our sister companies. “FIBA Americas TV is the ideal channel to kick off the new THEMA-Alterna’TV partnership and also give cable operators a unique offering for sport fans.”

ON THE AIR

Ahead of the 2016 college football season, ESPN is bringing in Molly McGrath to serve as a college sports sideline reporter and host for its programming. McGrath will become a sideline reporter for ESPN’s Friday night college football telecasts and host College Football Live on select days beginning in late August. She will also be a sideline reporter on ESPN’s 2016-17 college basketball telecasts.

Speaking of which, ESPN unveiled its new pairings for both Thursday and Friday night college football games on ESPN this season, which includes a new deal with college football analyst David Pollack. Shifts will see play-by-play commentator Dave Flemming move to Thursday nights and call games alongside Jesse Palmer in a two-man booth with Laura Rutledge as sideline reporter. Play-by-play commentator Adam Amin will call Friday night games with analyst Mack Brown and sideline reporter Molly McGrath, David Pollack’s new multi-year deal will see him continue to appear on College GameDay each week, with a more prominent role on College Football Live and contribute to additional studio shows this season.

FOX Sports saw Saturday’s PBC heavyweight title fight average a 1.2/3 rating with 1,759,000 viewers, according to Nielsen. Viewership was up 9% over FOX’s last PBC event from April 30, led by Birmingham’s 8.4/13, followed by Jacksonville and Las Vegas both with a 2.3/4. Following the main event on FOX, PBC action moved to FS1 and averaged 209,000 viewers to ranks as the fourth most-watched PBC card on the network to date.
 
The X Games is heading north, and will take place in Minneapolis for its summer games over the next two years at US Bank Stadium, running July 13-16, 2017 and July 19-22, 2018. “We are thrilled to bring the X Games to Minneapolis next July,” said Tim Reed, VP, ESPN X Games. “We believe that teaming up with the City of Minneapolis, Minnesota Sports Facility Authority (MSFA), SMG and Meet Minneapolis and the truly impressive new, state-of-the-art U.S. Bank Stadium will provide an extraordinary opportunity to grow the X Games in a new region of the country and in a city that’s quickly becoming recognized as a premier sports and entertainment destination.  It was a very competitive bid process and we feel privileged to have had such great interest and thank the multiple cities that participated in the process. Ultimately, the combination of resources, support, fit and passion from the Minneapolis team brought us here and we couldn’t be happier.”

beIN Sports locked in a new content distribution deal with CenturyLink for Prism TV customers. Starting on July 20, both beIN Sports and beIN Sports en Espanol content will be available to the majority of CenturyLink’s Prism TV subscribers through the CenturyLink Prism Preferred and Prism Sports Plus packages. 

Actor/producer/director Michael Rapaport is now going pro with his fantasy sports talents. SiriusXM announced that Rapaport will host a weekly fantasy football show on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio, dubbed Ya Never Know beside John Hansen. Shows will run every Tuesday from 6-8p starting July 26 and through the end of the 2016 NFL season. 
 
The IOC awarded the 2018-2020 broadcast rights to the Olympics to IMC, nabbing rights on all media platforms in all languages in 22 territories throughout the region. IMC will partner with broadcasters across the region and leverage all of Digicel’s platforms to deliver live coverage and highlights of the Olympic Games via free-to-air and cable television, as well as all mobile, streaming and other digital media platforms. In addition, the IOC and IMC will work together on distribution and content creation for the IOC’s soon-to-be-launched Olympic Channel.

Visa finalized its roster of athletes for the Team Visa roster at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, locking in 60 athletes representing a range of 26 sports, including the 10 competitors from the IOC’s first0ever team of Refugee Olympic athletes. “The refugee Olympic athletes are inspiring the world with their incredible stories of perseverance and bravery, overcoming great odds to get to the top of their respective sports and compete on the world’s stage,” said Chris Curtin, Chief Marketing Innovation and Brand Officer, Visa, Inc.  “These athletes, who will march with the Olympic flag at the Opening Ceremony in Rio, are a powerful addition to the Team Visa family, each embodying Visa’s belief in acceptance for everyone, everywhere.”
 
The PGA TOUR, RBC, Golf Canada and the Heritage Classic Foundation jointly announced that RBC inked a six-year extension to serve as title sponsor of both the RBC Canadian Open and RBC Heritage. The new agreements take effect in 2018 and run through 2023. “Since assuming sponsorship of Canada’s national golf championship in 2008, RBC has been a tremendous partner of the PGA TOUR,” Jay Monahan, Deputy Commissioner of the PGA TOUR, said during a press conference at Glen Abbey Golf Club, site of this week’s RBC Canadian Open. “RBC became passionately involved with the tournament from the outset and since that time, has increased its involvement in golf by sponsoring the RBC Heritage, supporting PGA TOUR and LPGA players through Team RBC, and funding youth and amateur golf initiatives in Canada.”

The ACC, in conjunction with Raycom Sports and FishBait Marketing, is teaming with Lumber Liquidators, which will now become the presenting sponsor of the first-ever ACC Football Tailgate Tour. The Tour will stop at each of the 14 ACC Football campuses and ACC FanFest during the 2016 Dr. Pepper ACC Football Championship Game. The event will feature a 53-foot tractor trailer and include interactive games, autograph signings with the ACC Football legends and a chance for ACC fans to receive giveaways and prizes.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

EFL Digital locked in Realise and NeuLion as its new long-term digital partners in a deal that runs until the end of the 2022/23 season. Realise will be charged with the design and development of EFL Digital’s club web and mobile sites as well as implementing the Episerver content management system, while streaming, merchandising, and payment services will be provided by NeuLion. The one year build will see new sites go live on July 2017.

SI Play is launching a new mobile app that offers a collection of social tools and services designed to “advance, celebrate and expand the world of youth sports.” The app will look to help youth leagues via team communication, scheduling, attendance tracking, volunteer duties, last-minute notifications, and real-time scoring updates and Scorecasts.
