IN THE NEWS

The 75th Emmy Awards have officially been postponed. Amid the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes, the ceremony – originally planned for September 18 – has been delayed. It’s the first time the show has been delayed since 2001, in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. A new date has not been confirmed.

A federal judge dismissed Donald Trump’s $475 million defamation lawsuit against CNN. The lawsuit alleged CNN’s on-air references to Trump’s claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him as “the Big Lie” created a “false and incendiary association” between Trump and Adolph Hitler. “Nazi references in the political discourse (made by whichever ‘side’) [are] odious and repugnant,” wrote US District Judge Raag Singhal. “But bad rhetoric is not defamation when it does not include false statements of fact. CNN’s use of the phrase ‘the Big Lie’ in connection with Trump’s election challenges does not give rise to a plausible inference that Trump advocates the persecution and genocide of Jews or any other group of people. No reasonable viewer could (or should) plausibly make that reference.”

CNN’s Christine Romans has left the network after 24 years. “It has been a pleasure waking up early for you for so many years to get your morning started,” the “Early Start” anchor and chief business correspondent said on Friday. “I love CNN dearly….But I have decided I am ready for a new chapter.” CNN has not made an announcement regarding Romans’ replacement.

The CW has yanked acquired series “Down to Earth with Zac Efron” and “Fantastic Friends” from its Tuesday lineup after two episodes. “Down to Earth” premiered on July 18 to 306,000 total viewers and dropped to 232,000 the following week, while “Fantastic Friends” was averaging 160,000. Taking their place will be reruns of “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” and “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”.

Also axed is Hulu musical romantic comedy “Up Here,” after one season. The series, from “Dear Evan Hansen” writer Steven Levenson, followed a NYC couple in 1999.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

“Lando,” written by Donald Glover and his brother Stephen, is coming to Disney+. “Lando” follows the story of space hero Lando Calrissian in the “Star Wars” galaxy. The Glovers, who previously collaborated on “Atlanta” and “Swarm,” took over writing and developing the project from “Dear White People” creator Justin Simien. No hard feelings there – said Simien in an Instagram story, “Donald is a national treasure. Glad he and Stephen get to carry the character forward their way. Can’t wait to see. Rooting for everybody Black.”

Peacock soap opera “Days of Our Lives” is suspending production for a week. While no reason was given for the break, the hiatus follows a two-month misconduct investigation against co-executive producer/director Albert Alarr. The investigation led to Alarr receiving a written warning and the request that he undergo training, leading to outrage from cast and crew over his remaining in his co-EP and director roles, reports Deadline.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

The writers’ and actors’ strikes have prompted the postponement of the premiere date for limited series “A Murder at the End of the World” from August 29 to November on Hulu. The FX murder mystery is set at the remote compound of a reclusive billionaire.

Bioseries “Ellas Soy Yo, Gloria Trevi” debuts on ViX’s premium plan on Tuesday, August 15. The series follows the tumultuous story of the Mexican pop star.

STREAMING

Reality show regular Bethenny Frankel (“The Real Housewives of New York,”
“Bethenny Ever After,” “A Big Shot with Bethenny”) has hired high-profile attorneys Bryan Freedman and Mark Geragos in her crusade to secure protections for reality stars. Frankel maintains they are being exploited and has made a call for them unionization.

SPORTS

Alex Rodriguez is reportedly inking an exclusive, multi-year contract with Fox Sports. Under the deal, the 14-time MLB All Star would work exclusively for Fox, ending his deal to host a broadcast for ESPN next season. Rodriguez first joined Fox Sports as an analyst in 2017.

The CW will be the exclusive home to the NASCAR Xfinity Series from 2025-2031. The net secured rights to 33 live races annually, as well as practices and qualifying events. “Landing the NASCAR Xfinity Series is a game changer for The CW and our CW Sports division and represents another important building block in our programming strategy,” said Dennis Miller, President of The CW. “Live sports are the most watched television content and with The CW’s national reach, moving NASCAR Xfinity Series to The CW will transform and elevate the viewing experience for the series and its fans.”
