IN THE NEWS

What does Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino think about the platform’s rebrand to X? Count her in. “It’s an exceptionally rare thing – in life or in business – that you get a second chance to make another big impression,” she tweeted. “Twitter made one massive impression and changed the way we communicate. Now, X will go further, transforming the global town square…. There’s absolutely no limit to this transformation. X will be the platform that can deliver, well….everything. @elonmusk and I are looking forward to working with our teams and every single one of our partners to bring X to the world.”

As for what tweets should be called: “x’s”, Musk told a user. When it comes to retweets, “that whole concept should be rethought,” offered Musk.

Beneath the Waves, a scientific research institute, and advocacy organization Oceana join new partners Van Leeuwen, Crumbl Cookies, Australian Gold, Bark Social, Eventbrite, Ripley’s Aquarium and Valpak for Discovery’s Shark Week. “Shark Week has been at the forefront of summer entertainment for 35 years and our partner brand alignments allow fans to experience their love of the event on and off the screen,” said Karen Bronzo, CMO, US Networks Group, WBD. “Social good is an important aspect of many of the partnerships and supports the core mission of Shark Week, which is to celebrate these amazing creatures and inspire viewers to delve deeper into their world.”

CNBC’s former senior White House correspondent Kayla Tausche has taken on that role at CNN. Tausche was also a co-anchor of CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

Altice USA is considering the sale of Cheddar News, the streaming news network it purchased in 2019 for $200 million, according to The New York Times. Goldman Sachs has been hired to assist with the process of exploring strategic options, reports the Times, which may or may not result in a sale.

STRIKE UPDATE

“I have a bad feeling that this strike will be long and bitter,” said George R.R. Martin (“Game of Thrones”) in a blog post. “These strikes are not really about name writers or producers or showrunners, most of whom are fine; we’re striking for the entry-level writers, the story editors, the students hoping to break in, the actor who has four lines, the guy working his first staff job who dreams of creating his own show one day, as I did back in the 80s),” he wrote. Martin also explained season two of his “House of Dragons” has continued filming because scripts had been completed before the strike, filming is taking place in Europe, and actors are members of the British union, not SAG-AFTRA.

Season eleven of Hallmark Channel drama “When Calls the Heart” is the latest of 68 projects granted interim agreements by SAG-AFTRA to resume filming. Season ten kicks off July 30.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Maximum Effort Channel, a partnership between Fubo and Maximum Effort, announced the channel’s first series of “Maximum Moments” with “ALF” (1986-1990), creator Paul Fusco and Shout! Studios. “ALF” will premiere on Maximum Effort Channel on Saturday, July 29, surrounded by sponsored content for Mint Mobile, Fubo, Hims, MNTN, and Ring featuring ALF himself. “At Maximum Effort, we love taking risks and blurring the lines between shows and sponsorship because we believe both can be equally entertaining,” said Maximum Effort Co-founder Ryan Reynolds. “Besides my irrational love of ALF growing up, one of the reasons we licensed this show was precisely because Paul, Shout! Studios and our intrepid brand partners wanted to plot with us to bring ‘ALF’ back to life. Tune in this Caturday!”

STREAMING

Consumers are turning to curated collections and hubs to find content based on a theme, with eight in ten viewers watch content from a collection or hub at least occasionally, according to the “State of Media, Entertainment and Tech: Viewing Behaviors 2023” report from Horowitz Research. Black streaming customers are especially engaged, with 80% reporting using Black content collections/hubs at least occasionally. Among Asian streamers, 65% watch Asian content collections/hubs, while 59% of Latinx streamers report using Latinx content collections/hubs. Among LGBTQIA+ consumers, 52% of streamers report using LGBTQIA+ content collections/hubs. “Until the industry works collaboratively to deliver a truly integrated search and discovery experience that comprises content from all possible streaming sources, consumers will continue to struggle to find what to watch” said Adriana Waterston, Insights and Strategy Lead for Horowitz Research. “Professional curation, such as these hubs or collections, are playing an increasingly relevant role in easing some of those struggles’ consumers are facing.”

Netflix introduced “My Netflix,” a shortcut for mobile users that replaces the “Downloads” tab. The feature allows viewers to easily find the series and movies they want to watch.

About two thirds (64%) of all TV homes report using a smart TV to stream video, compared with 47% in 2020, according to Hub Entertainment Research’s “Evolution of the TV Set” study. “The evolution of the TV set is making valuable new features available to viewers, whether it be better quality picture and sound, streaming, apps, or voice control,” said David Tice, senior consultant to Hub and co-author of the study. “This also means challenges to incumbent firms in the TV ecosystem as alternative content providers, advertising sellers, and gatekeepers dramatically increase their presence through the growth of smart TVs.”

Brightcove is teaming with PubMatic to combine PubMatic’s programmatic advertising solutions with Brightcove’s video platform. The goal: enhance and bolster demand for the recently launched Brightcove Ad Monetization service.

Fuse Media is brining Fuse+ to Prime Video. The new offering on Prime Video is an expansion of Fuse Media’s agreement with Amazon for Amazon Freevee, which offers Fuse FAST channels Shades of Black, Backstage, Latino Vibes, and OutTV Proud.

TheSoul Publishing has partnered with Plex, bringing its content channels to Plex’s userbase in more than 180 countries.

Peacock’s “Chris Fleming: Hell” premieres Friday, August 18. The comedy special offers Fleming’s surreal take on the plight of being a live performer.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Robert Blair, President of International TV Distribution for Warner Bros. Discovery, is leaving after 25 years with the company. “Seven months into 2023, although we remain confident about our trajectory as a business, we are at another inflection point, and one where the global economy has not rebounded as quickly as we had hoped,” said Gerhard Zeiler, WBD President of International, announcing the exit. Blair will not be replaced.

Also out at WBD is David McGuire, EVP of Programming & Development for Telepictures, after 33 years at the company. “I’ve loved my time here at Telepictures and will treasure the memories of all the successes we built here together,” said McGuire. “It’s an incredible team, and I know they’ll continue to flourish as they take on the many challenges and opportunities being posed by our always-changing business.”
