Altice USA is considering the sale of Cheddar News, the streaming news network it purchased in 2019 for $200 million, according to The New York Times. Goldman Sachs has been hired to assist with the process of exploring strategic options, reports the Times, which may or may not result in a sale.
STRIKE UPDATE
“I have a bad feeling that this strike will be long and bitter,” said George R.R. Martin (“Game of Thrones”) in a blog post. “These strikes are not really about name writers or producers or showrunners, most of whom are fine; we’re striking for the entry-level writers, the story editors, the students hoping to break in, the actor who has four lines, the guy working his first staff job who dreams of creating his own show one day, as I did back in the 80s),” he wrote. Martin also explained season two of his “House of Dragons” has continued filming because scripts had been completed before the strike, filming is taking place in Europe, and actors are members of the British union, not SAG-AFTRA.
Season eleven of Hallmark Channel drama “When Calls the Heart” is the latest of 68 projects granted interim agreements by SAG-AFTRA to resume filming. Season ten kicks off July 30.

The season three premiere of CBS’ “Secret Celebrity Renovation” sees Phil Keoghan, host and EP of “The Amazing Race,” surprise his former neighbor with a renovation of the local hospice center where she volunteers. The two-hour opener airs Friday, August 4 at 8p.
HGTV’s newest renovation series, “What’s Wrong with That House?”, kicks off Tuesday, August 15 at 10p. Home inspector Joe Mazza and designer Noel Gatts will help clients uncover and repair hidden issues in their homes before they take on their dream renovations.
“Tia Alison,” telling the story of a woman who goes from being the cool aunt to the mom of three orphaned nephews, premieres Thursday, July 27 on ViX.
Season two of “Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators” premieres Saturday, July 29 at 7p on Ovation TV.

Consumers are turning to curated collections and hubs to find content based on a theme, with eight in ten viewers watch content from a collection or hub at least occasionally, according to the “State of Media, Entertainment and Tech: Viewing Behaviors 2023” report from Horowitz Research. Black streaming customers are especially engaged, with 80% reporting using Black content collections/hubs at least occasionally. Among Asian streamers, 65% watch Asian content collections/hubs, while 59% of Latinx streamers report using Latinx content collections/hubs. Among LGBTQIA+ consumers, 52% of streamers report using LGBTQIA+ content collections/hubs. “Until the industry works collaboratively to deliver a truly integrated search and discovery experience that comprises content from all possible streaming sources, consumers will continue to struggle to find what to watch” said Adriana Waterston, Insights and Strategy Lead for Horowitz Research. “Professional curation, such as these hubs or collections, are playing an increasingly relevant role in easing some of those struggles’ consumers are facing.”
Netflix introduced “My Netflix,” a shortcut for mobile users that replaces the “Downloads” tab. The feature allows viewers to easily find the series and movies they want to watch.
About two thirds (64%) of all TV homes report using a smart TV to stream video, compared with 47% in 2020, according to Hub Entertainment Research’s “Evolution of the TV Set” study. “The evolution of the TV set is making valuable new features available to viewers, whether it be better quality picture and sound, streaming, apps, or voice control,” said David Tice, senior consultant to Hub and co-author of the study. “This also means challenges to incumbent firms in the TV ecosystem as alternative content providers, advertising sellers, and gatekeepers dramatically increase their presence through the growth of smart TVs.”

Robert Blair, President of International TV Distribution for Warner Bros. Discovery, is leaving after 25 years with the company. “Seven months into 2023, although we remain confident about our trajectory as a business, we are at another inflection point, and one where the global economy has not rebounded as quickly as we had hoped,” said Gerhard Zeiler, WBD President of International, announcing the exit. Blair will not be replaced.
