IN THE NEWS
“This is a dark day for America’s Public Television Stations,” said Patrick Butler, President and CEO of APTS, after the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies recommended eliminating public media funding in its FY 2024 appropriations bill. “We are only one of the casualties of a severe cutback that would also affect other important national institutions,” warned Butler. The bill would provide no funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), effective in FY 2026, a cut of $535 million from the current appropriation.
Linear TV ad impressions grew by 5% to 4.21 trillion in the first half of 2023, while national TV ad spend dropped by 7.4% to $21.6 billion, according to iSpot.tv’s First Half TV Transparency Report. NBA games delivered 14% more impressions and generated the most ad impressions the first half of the year. But sports isn’t the only game in town. “Sports may grab the biggest headlines (and largest ad budgets), but that’s just one way to approach TV advertising,” notes the report. “For all of the brands that dedicate significant time and budget into that premium programming, TV still offers plenty of additional avenues for ad value — from differing dayparts, to unsung networks and emerging programming — at costs that allow even occasional advertisers to scale the medium for its own preferred business outcomes.”
ABC has unveiled its first “Golden Bachelor.” Retired restaurateur Gerry Turner, 71, will look for love on the reality dating show spin-off, launching in the fall.
Paramount hit “Yellowstone” has been added to CBS’ fall schedule as the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupts primetime plans. The drama will take the place of “The Equalizer” on Sundays at 9p, starting with season one. The network is also welcoming back “SEAL Team,” which aired on CBS for four seasons before moving to Paramount+ for season five.
MORE STRIKE UPDATES
How much will new contracts with the DGA, WGA and SAG-AFTRA cost media companies? “With the sides remaining far apart, we estimate an agreement increasing compensation under new collective bargaining agreements will ultimately cost Moody’s-rated companies an additional $450 million to $600 million a year for each year of a new three-year contract for all three guilds,” wrote Moody’s debt analyst Neil Begleyin in a July 17 report. “There is great play in these estimates, and some of this increased cost, particularly for television production, is likely to be passed on to buyers.” Theatrical movies will be hardest hit, says Begley, but after exhibitors, “broadcast television and cable networks are also exposed, given they are already in secular decline with rising costs to consumers and a shrinking value proposition relative to direct-to-consumer video-on demand streaming services such as Netflix.”
Season two of AMC drama “Interview with the Vampire” has suspended production in the wake of the SAG-AFTRA strike, despite its location in Prague and primarily international cast. The series joins other shows, including Prime Video’s “Wheel of Time,” that have canceled appearances at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23.
Season four of “The Chosen” has been granted a waiver from SAG to continue filming. Waivers are granted for shows from independent producers not affiliated with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, and agree to retroactively comply with new contract terms once the strike is settled. “The Chosen,” which focuses on Jesus of Nazareth, is a crowdfunded series.
Congressman Adam Schiff was seen on the SAG-AFTRA picket line along with the guild’s chief negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. “Congress did a lousy job responding to all the changes in social media. We need to do much better when it comes to AI,” said Schiff, who is running for Senate in California. “Otherwise, this country’s about to go through the most massive social experiment in which the American people may be the losers.”
