07/14/22: Capcom is upping the hype for Street Fighter at Evo

Good morning! It’s Thursday and this is your early morning Esports brief.

As EVO prepares to make its live return to Las Vegas, event organizers announced the addition of Capcom’s Street Fighter 6 to the festivities from Aug. 5-7 in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. In addition to Capcom sharing Street Fighter 6 announcements, the weekend will culminate with Evo’s Street Fighter V finals taking place in the Michelob ULTRA Arena on August 7.

“The Street Fighter series is responsible for the origin of Evo. We are beyond excited to welcome Capcom to this year’s event and give our fans the opportunity to check out Street Fighter 6,” said Rick Thiher, General Manager of Evo. “We are committed to collaborating with publishers like Capcom in an effort to celebrate the legacy of our genre and inspire the next generation of the fighting game community.”

COMPETITION

The Apex Legends Global Series culminated its season on a high note, with more than 632,000 concurrent viewers tuning in at its peak, according to Esports Charts, and averaging nearly 290,000 viewers across all platforms throughout the event and notching 11.2 million hours watched with DarkZero taking the crown. In addition, organizers announced that the ALGS will return for a third year of competition.

Subnation Media is partnering with KRAFTON to become PUBG Esports Americas‘ Agency of Record this year, where they will be charged with the execution of future PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS esports events across North, Central and South America in addition to marketing.

Gamers8 locked in takeoff for its Rocket League competition, which is the first international elite tournament series to headline the event. Starting today, teams will battle it out for their share of a $2 million prize pool with 24 participating teams competing in four groups of six, the top two teams from each group will secure their places in the play-offs. Among the 24 teams vying for Rocket League supremacy at Gamers8 are Furia Esports from Brazil, FaZe Clan from the USA, and Endpoint CEX from the United Kingdom.

FIFA confirmed content details for the FIFAe Finals 2022, which will see three world champions crowned with play running through July 30. New elements will include a new broadcast experience with the FIFAe Show throughout the event, with talent and guests that include Spencer Own, Rachel Stringer and Mike LaBelle. In addition, all participating teams an dplayers will be able to produce their own streams for their respective channels.

STREAMHATCHET

Stream Hatchet has released their 2022 Brands in Gaming and Esports Report, covering the state of advertising and brand sponsorship in live streaming. We dive into types of activations, sponsored placements and assets on Twitch, and how to measure those effectively for reporting. We also look at several case studies of brands currently activating in the industry and how others can follow their lead.
Sponsored activations in live streaming gaming and esports are rapidly growing. Sponsored streams hours watched have increased 211% since Q1 2020. The number of sponsored streams on Twitch peaked in Q1 2021 at 385k, which garnered a total of 125 million hours watched. The number of sponsored activations in Q1 of 2022 was much less, at 217k unique streams, but garnered the most hours watched at 153 million hours. Brands are becoming more efficient with their sponsored content and are reaping the benefits.
One way brands can assess their effectiveness on live streaming is by measuring chat engagement. Streaming fans and gamers love their snacks, and the industry has a ton of room for sponsorship with streamers. Doritos takes up the lion’s share of chat mentions with 42% of total snack brand mentions across Twitch in Q1 of this year.
Doritos is an active player in the live streaming industry and sponsors several streaming events, including the Doritos Bowl, a Twitch Rivals event which brings together top streamers to compete in a variety of games. Their most effective piece of marketing, however, is their custom Doritos chip emote, which is now utilized by streaming fans as an ubiquitous symbol for snacks.

SPONSORSHIP & ACTIVATION

Dignitas locked in a new partnership between its Fortnite Collective and candy brand MIKE AND IKE, which now becomes the Official Candy Partner of Dignitas Fortnite, marking the first-ever Fortnite-focused partnership for Dignitas. The brand, as the exclusive candy partner of Dignitas’ Fortnite Collective, will sponsor a variety of new fan-focused content including a new ‘Sweet Plays’ TikTok series, an ‘In The Mix’ video series, and an upcoming competitive ‘Flavor Brawl’ event.

Back to FIFA, the org revealed that EPOS signed on as a sponsor for the trio of FIFAe World Cup, FIFAe Club World Cup and FIFAe Nations Cup being played this weekend. The Danish audio technolofy company becomes the Official Gaming Headsets, Streaming Microphones and External Sound Cards.

ASUS Republic of Gamers partnered with the Saudi Esports Federation to sponsor the Saudi eLeagues as well as the Gamers8 festival with play kicking off this week. ASUS ROG received a booth at Gamers8 and will provide PCs to the Saudi eLeagues.

More than half of American esports fans use Twitch and YouTube Gaming to watch live streams of gaming content.

PLATFORMS/METAVERSE

Twitter Gaming revealed its H1 2022 conversation data, breaking down the most talked about games/esports teams/leagues/etc and noting that H1 2022 ranked as the biggest half ever for gaming conversation on Twitter. Overall, there were approximately 1.5 billion Tweets about gaming during the period, up 36% year over year. Genshin Impact remained atop the charts for Most Talked About Video Game globally, after claiming the title in 2021. The most Tweeted-about esports team was Loud Esports, followed by Karmine Corp, Crazy Raccoon, FaZe Clan and paiN Gaming. Top Esports Leagues globally were Campeonato Brasileiro de League of Legends, Apex Esports, League of Legends Champions Korea, Call of Duty League, and Overwatch League.

Ali ‘Myth’ Kabbabi inked an exclusive streaming deal with YouTube Gaming, and will no longer be posting to Twitch. In a tweet, YouTube’s Head of Gaming, Lester Chen, said: “Today we welcome Myth to YouTube Gaming. I’ve loved that he has always bet on himself to take his passion to the next level and has continued to evolve his brand despite all the twists and turns.”

TEAMS

Complexity Gaming announced that actor, singer and musician Jordan Fisher has joined the organization as a part-owner in addition to enlisting in its roster of content creators. Working with the teams and its parent company, GameSquare Esports, Fisher will host and participate in a range of esports and gaming events involving other content creators under the Complexity banner.

Riot Games issued its punishment on Wednesday for TSM owner Andy Dinh, after an eight-month investigation, finding him guilty of violating the company’s rules around “harassment” and “profanity and hate speech.” Riot Games placed Dinh, 30, on a two-year probation and fined TSM $75,000, which will be donated to an anti-bullying or mental health charity.

Netflix series Arcane, based on League of Legends, received two nominations for the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. The popular series from Riot Games and Fortiche Productions landed nods for Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy or Drama or Series (Half-Hour) and Animation, as well as Outstanding Animated Program.
