Good morning. It’s Wednesday June 22, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

The NHL unveiled its 2016-17 regular season schedule, with play beginning on Oct. 12 with a four-game slate and run through April 9. Opening the doors to the new season will be Flamers/Oilers, Maple Leafs/Senators, Blues/Blackhawks and Kings/Sharks. Meanwhile, the Penguins will raise their fourth Stanley Cup championship banner on Oct. 13 before facing the Caps. Highlights of the schedule include the first-ever NHL Centennial Classic pitting the Red Wings/Maple Leafs in an outdoor game in Toronto on New Year’s Day; Blackhawks/Blues in the NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 2; the 2016 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic between the Jets/Oilers on Oct. 23 and the 2017 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series between the Flyers/Penguins on Feb. 25.

ON THE AIR

FOX Sports is reporting that its coverage of the US Open this past weekend drew in 28.3 million viewers for all or part of the four-day event per Nielsen. Final round play nabbed a 3.4 household rating with an average of 5.4 million viewers over the course of Sunday’s nine-plus hours of coverage. The second year of the company’s coverage of the event generated a 13% rise over the most recent U.S. Open final round played on the East Coast. Top markets: Pittsburgh (7.8), Minneapolis (6.4), Greensboro (5.7), Jacksonville (5.6), Tampa (5.4) and West Palm Beach (5.4).

Trent Dilfer is going long with ESPN, announcing a new multi-year extension to remain with the company where he will now expand his analyst role to include Sunday NFL Countdown along with his duties on Monday Night Countdown pregame show and postgame SportsCenter.

In other talent news, ESPN college sports play-by-play commentator Jason Benetti will call his first nationally-televised MLB game for ESPN on Wednesday Night Baseball tonight at 10p, joining  analysts Doug Glanville and Rick Sutcliffe in the booth. ESPN’s Global Game series, which celebrates various cultural influences on the game of baseball, will also return for Wednesday Night Baseball this week with a focus on Mexico. Benetti, Sutcliffe and Glanville will host a variety of influential Mexican guests during the telecast, who have made a significant impact on the game of baseball.

NBA Digital scored record-setting numbers for its extensive coverage of the 2016 NBA Finals across all platforms with NBA TV averaging an all-time best 258,000 viewers for its postgame coverage of the seven-game series. NBA Gametime averaged 553,000 viewers, delivering the most-viewed edition of all-time for the NBA Playoffs. Meanwhile, a record 1.4 billion videos were viewed across NBA.com and NBA App, globally, eclipsing the record set during last year’s Finals.
 
Boxeo Telemundo Ford hits the summer season on Friday with a 10-round bout between David “Dabo” Quijano/Ricardo “Meserito” Rodríguez for the WBO Super Latin Flyweight title at 11:25. Other dates in Telemundo’s lineup for the franchise include July 1, July 8 and July 15.

CBS Sports is tapping Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena to host the 2016 CBS Sports Classic on Dec. 17. The doubleheader features North Carolina/Kentucky and UCLA/Ohio State.

Tennis Channel is set to serve its ninth straight year of Wimbledon Primetime starting June 27, dedicating more than 200 hours to the tournament. The program will air every night of the two-week event, with encores following immediately, and run throughout the night and into the morning. Talent includes Martina Navratilova, Jim Courier, Tracy Austin, and Lindsay Davenport with lead-host Bill Macatee.

ONE World Sports announced plans to showcase the 2016 Super Micro USA Table Tennis National Championships and the 2016 USA Table Tennis Open Championships. The Men’s and Women’s Finals of the 2016 Super Micro USATT National Championships take place in Las Vegas on July 8th at 10:30p with coverage on both of the company’s linear network as well as via its Watch ONE World Sports app. ONE World Sports will also broadcast the Men’s and Women’s Finals from the 2016 US Open in December.

ESPN will honor Zaevion Dobson, a 15-year-old high school football star from Knoxville who shielded two girls from a barrage of bullets last December with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at The 2016 ESPYS. Dobson died from his wounds and his month Zenobia Dobson will accept the honor on his behalf, accompanied by his brothers Zack Dobson and Markastin Taylor.

Tough Mudder announced a multiyear partnership with Team Rubicon, “the only nonprofit disaster response organization that mobilizes military veterans to support communities devastated by natural disasters” with an aim to raise $1.5 million by year-end 2017 and drive volunteer participation. The partnership will include donation matching, on-site activation, and Mudder Nation Mobilization.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Instagram’s announcement that it now has more than 500 million monthly active users worldwide saw sports fans make up one of the most active communities on the platform. The company says more than 165M people on Instagram follow at least one sports-related account with people, on average, followomg eight sports-related accounts, six of which are athletes.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

FanServ and Sportradar are teaming up to “dramatically enhance the impact of sports advertising” with the creation of ad platform, SportServ, blending Sportradar’s real-time sports data and contextual updates directly with digital display and video advertisements to allow advertisers to tailor their message and target their delivery as the action unfolds. “With SportServ, advertisers can more effectively control the content of their messaging. This alliance allows both brands and publishers to sync creative to live game action and target delivery based on live events and location like they’ve never been able to before,” said Benn Gurton, Business Development, US at Sportradar. “At the most excitement moments of any game, whether Stephen Curry is going off from three or Tom Brady is picking apart a defense, SportServ will allow brands to connect with consumers.”

ESPORTS

The UFC isn’t the only thing apparently on Tencent’s radar. The China company just paid $8.6 billion to reel in of “Clash of Clans” developer Supercell from Japan’s Softbank. Six months ago, Tencent made its mark in the eSports world with the purchase of “League of Legends” developer Riot Games, which pumps out more than $1 billion in revenue, and previously acquired European mobile game maker Miniclip.

ESL announced that, this weekend’s Guild Wars 2 battles at ESL Studios in Burbank will be flanked by a broadcast team that consists of Joe “Storm” Nowasell, Christian “Heurix” Thomasser, Daniel “Jebro” Littleton, Hans “Supcutie” Onsum, and James “Kaelaris” Carrol. Fans can tune in 1:30a on Saturday on the Guild Wars 2 Twitch channel.

Speaking of talent, the finals for the Esports Championship Series from June 24-26 will see the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive battles get commentary and analysis from James Bardolph, Daniel Kapadia, Matt Trivett, Henry Greer, Robin Johansson, Janko Paunovic, Tomi Kovanen and with from Scott Smith and Sue Lee on FACEIT’s official Twitch channel.
