Good morning. It’s Monday June 20, 2016, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Behavioral Targeting: Behavioral targeting refers to the use of previous online user activity (such as content viewed, searches, or pages viewed) to generate a segment that is then used to match advertising creative to users.
The cable box no longer holds a monopoly on DVR technology. The newly released Tablo DVR app for Apple TV lets users watch and record broadcast TV, whether they have a cable subscription or not. Technically, Tablo doesn’t add DVR capabilities directly to the device. Instead, you need to buy an extra device, the networked Tablo DVR. The device picks up over-the-air antenna broadcast TV, and streams and records it to mobile and connected devices. Selling at $200, it doesn’t exactly come cheap.
Twitter is expanding its live video footprint. The company is rolling out a new live video button for Android and iOS phones. The company also confirmed that, in the coming weeks, it will add a Periscope embed feature, allowing users to film Periscope live-streams directly from the Twitter app. On the web, Twitter is taking Periscope access even further. According to the International Business Times, the company will soon enable users to embed Periscope videos across the web, instead of restricting Periscope live-streams to Twitter and the Periscope app.
Snapchat is moving off-app – sort of. In a blog post, Snapchat’s Nathan Jurgenson announced that the company will be launching Real Life, a tech-focused digital magazine. According to Jurgenson, the site will “publish essays, arguments, and narratives about living with technology,” posting a new article every weekday. While Snapchat will fund the site, Jurgenson says that it will maintain its editorial independence. It launches June 27 at http://reallifemag.com/.
The video marketing platform Innovid announced a new partnership with Twitter. Under the partnership, marketers using Innovid’s platform will be able to access metrics related to their Twitter video ads, such as engagement, time spent, video views, and viewability. “We all know that video is a highly engaging format, but marketers are challenged to justify shifting budgets unless they have access to metrics to accurately measure ROI,” Tal Chalozin, Innovid’s Co-Founder and CTO, told Cynopsis Digital. “This collaboration proves that measurement is top-of-mind for Twitter as well. As a result of this collaboration, marketers working with Innovid can now not only reach and engage Twitter users with pre-roll videos, but they can also view detailed metrics related to those campaigns from within our video marketing platform, holistically. This vantage point offers a really simple way to understand all video campaign metrics across all platforms, devices, screens and publishers in one comprehensive system.”
Back in January, the Hong Kong-based Huanxi Media Group partnered with the movie streaming service MUBI. The plan was to launch a new movie streaming service in China. Alas, it was not to be. Huanxi announced that it has canceled its deal with MUBI. (Huanxi had planned to invest $50 million into the venture.) No details yet as to why exactly the deal fell through. In a statement, Huanxi told the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that it and MUBI are still “discussing other possible forms of cooperation.”
Flix Premiere, a transactional video on demand service for indie films, has launched in the U.S. The service offers exclusive access to a selection of theatrical releases, charging $4.99 per movie. It launched in the U.K. about two months ago.

Interlude, a company that specializes in creating interactive videos, has a new investment partner. Sony Pictures Entertainment has made a “multi-million dollar strategic investment” in the company, according to Variety. (The exact dollar amount is still unknown.) The funding will be geared toward Interlude’s Eko platform, which is designed to let users control the outcomes of stories on screen. Funding-wise, Interlude has been doing fairly well for itself. It already raised $18.2 million in a December fundraising round.
Today from 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM ET, the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the millennial-oriented media brand What’s Trending will present a series of live musical performances. The performances come as part of the MDA’s Live Unlimited campaign. Musical artists will include Steve Aoki, Megan Nicole, Tiffany Alford, and several others. In addition, celebs such as Greg Grunberg, Suchin Pak, and Matt Santoro will take to social media in support of the MDA, and to promote the live-stream. The performances will be featured across celebrities’ social pages, as well as the MDA’s Facebook page.
At the Advertising Research Foundation’s Audience Measurement Conference, Publicis and Nielsen Catalina Solutions presented the results of some notable new research into the effectiveness of addressable TV advertising. The insights stemmed from an analysis of two different consumer groups: Those known to buy a specific brand, and those known to buy brands in the same category. Publicis analyzed two separate campaigns across separate addressable TV platforms, both for the same client. (The client wasn’t disclosed.) The study determined that, while targeting brand buyers generates more of a sales lift, it doesn’t generate as much incremental revenue, since it targets a smaller audience. Overall, the category-targeted campaign generated over a million dollars in incremental sales, while the brand-targeted campaign generated bit over $700,000. But the brand buyer-targeted campaign was significantly more cost-efficient, generating incremental sales of $0.75 per household reached, as compared to $0.55 per category-buyer household. A new hire – and a new upcoming vertical – over at Vice Media: The online news giant has brought on Austin Walker to oversee a site focused on video game culture and news. He starts July 5. Walker will join Vice from the CBS Interactive-owned Giant Bomb, a wiki and video game website where Walker serves a news editor. The site is slated to roll out this year, along with five other new vertical sites. Variety was the first to report the news.
The digital advertising agency Adform has made some key new hires. Jay Stevens has joined the company as its first CRO, while Oliver Whitten will join the company in August as COO. Both Whitten and Stevens hail from the online ad tech firm Rubicon Project.
Comcast’s NBCU recently reached a deal to acquire a majority stake in DreamWorks Animation, which owns a controlling stake in the digital media company AwesomenessTV. Under the reorganization, which longtime DreamWorks honcho will oversee a small new division that includes AwesomenessTV? You can find the answer in tomorrow’s newsletter.
By a huge margin, PewDiePie boasts the most subscribed-to YouTube channel. Who has the second-most subscribed to channel? Answer: Chilean comedian and musician Germán Garmendia. His HolaSoyGerman channel boasts about 28 million subs – which is still 17 million less than PewDiePie’s.
