06.15.16

Good morning. It’s Wednesday June 15, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

NBC Olympics delivered a look at the set design for NBC’s daytime and late night studio this summer, located on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach. The beach studio will consist of two sets; one indoor and one outdoor, along with a main anchor desk, an interview area, and a news update desk, while showcasing panoramic views of the beach, Sugarloaf Mountain, and the Rio coast line. In addition, high-definition video monitors will help showcase highlights from the Games. Ryan Seacrest will serve as host for NBC’s late night coverage while hosts for NBC Olympics’ daytime coverage will be announced soon. The facility will mark the first time in 24 years, since the 1992 Barcelona Games, that NBC Olympics has had a major studio outside of the International Broadcast Center.

ON THE AIR

ABC saw Game 5 of the NBA Finals average 20,528,000 viewers for the network, to win the night and keep pace for the series to rank as the second most-watched ever on the network. Overall, the series is averaging 18,029,000 viewers with ratings led by Cleveland at a 38.5 and San Francisco/Oakland’s 36.9, followed by Sacramento, Miami and Columbus.

In other ratings news, FS1 saw Peru’s elimination of Brazil from the Copa America on Sunday average 879,000 viewers and rank as the top-rated non-USMNT game in network history. Meanwhile, Costa Rica’s win over Colombia on FS2 averaged 407,000 viewers to rank as the most-watched telecast on network history.

Las Vegas is poised to get its first major pro sports franchise, with the AP reporting that the NHL’s executive committee recommended that the league expand to the market with the Board of Governors meet next week. The article cites two sources confirming the decision, and a two-thirds vote from the 30 teams will now be required for final approval to create its first expansion club under Bill Foley, who would pay $500 million to become the league’s 31st team beginning with the 2017-18 season. Sources said that a local TV deal is in place for the team, although no specifics were given.
