Samsung is stepping up its ads for the NBA Finals, with the company and league partnering with Twitter to offer fans exclusive 360-degree video featuring behind-the-scenes footage of the Cavaliers/Warriors series. The ads will feature the new Samsung Gear 360 cameras before and after games showcasing pregame warm-ups and shooting, hallway entrances, captain meetings and postgame footage. Twitter is leveraging the content via the Twitter Amplify platform with users able to click on a Twitter website card to play the 360-degree video
In addition, with the NBA Finals underway, Twitter announced that it has again teamed up with the NBA to offer hashtag triggered emojis exclusively the platform. #NBAFinals unlocks the Larry O’Brien Trophy; #ALLin216 delivers the Cleveland Cavs logo; and #DubNation reveals the Golden State Warriors logo.
Brent Musburger inked a multi-year contract extension with ESPN in a move that will keep him as the signature college football voice of the SEC Network, calling weekly primetime football action with Jesse Palmer. Musburger will also continue as play-by-play commentator for weekly college basketball contests on ESPN.
The NFL locked in its dates and kickoff times of the 65-game NFL preseason, beginning of course with the annual NFL/Hall of Fame Game between the Packers/Colts on Aug. 7 at 8p on ESPN. National games for its partners will include Cowboys/Rams on ESPN on Aug. 13 at 5p, Falcons/Dolphins on NBC on Aug. 25 at 8p, Browns/Buccaneers on Aug. 26 at 8p and Titans/Raiders on Aug. 27 at 5p on CBS, as well as Chargers/Vikings at noon and Cardinals/Texans at 3p on FOX along with Bengals/Jaguars at 8p on NBC on Aug. 28.
ESPN announced that Bob Ley and Jorge Ramos will anchor the company’s month-long English and Spanish-language studio presentation of the UEFA European Football Championship 2016 in France this summer with the tournament starting on June 10. Ley leads a team that includes Mike Tirico — his last assignment for ESPN before joining NBC Sports – as well Steve Bower and Alison Bender. English-language studio analysts include Michael Ballack, Craig Burley, Kasey Keller, and more. Studio programming includes a 30-minute pre-game show, halftime, post-game and SportsCenter segments. ESPN Deportes’ coverage includes a 30-minute pre-game edition of Fuera de Juego, a halftime show, in-between match programming, and a two-hour TV exclusive presentation of Jorge Ramos y Su Banda, immediately following the last match of the day.

Meanwhile, the UEFA Champions League Final on Saturday ranked as the most-watched event on ESPN Deportes ever, according to Nielsen, with an average of 1.3 million Hispanic viewers and a 5.0 Hispanic household rating. Fuera de Juego’s post-game show notched its highest-rated, most-watched telecast thus far this year with an average 1.0 Hispanic household rating and 239,000 Hispanic viewers P+2.
Wednesday’s 2016 Stanley Cup Final generated a 27.5 household rating in Pittsburgh, its best-ever for a Penguins game on NBCSN. The San Francisco/San Jose/Oakland market registered a 5.6 local rating, it’s second-best ever for a Sharks game on the channel. Overall, the game earned a 1.89 overnight rating.
In other ratings news, the 2016 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship on ESPN2 and WatchESPN on Monday averaged 476,000 television viewers, for a 43% rise from the 2015 men’s lacrosse season finale. Additionally, ESPN2 on WatchESPN, the Memorial Day game saw a 171% increase in total minutes, 131% increase in average minute audience, and a 96% increase in unique viewers over the Pioneers-Terrapins matchup from last season.
Frank Fredericks, the IOC’s Chair of the Evaluation Commission for the 2024 Games, announced that all four cities competing to host the 2024 Summer Olympics (LA, Rome, Budapest, Paris) were moving forward in the evaluation process, nothing that “No significant issues were flagged at this stage that would merit not supporting the advancement of a particular city to the next stage. As a result, the Executive Board confirmed that all four Candidate Cities 2024 will advance to Stage 2 of the Candidature Process.”

Speaking of the Olympics, the IOC approved the new mascot for the PyeongChang Winter Games in 2018, unveiling a white tiger, which is “closely associated with Korean mythology and culture” and serving as a symbol of trust, strength and protection. Named Soohorang, “Sooho,” means the Korean word for “protection” while “Rang” derives from the Korean word “ho-rang-i”, which means “tiger”.
The inaugural State Farm Chicago Legends college basketball event detailed its plans for Dec. 17, locking in Illinois and Northwestern as well as BYU and Dayton. Meanwhile, a selection committee will annually recognize former standouts as Legends of Chicago Basketball on the court during the doubleheader. “The State Farm Chicago Legends will be an impactful event not only in Chicago, but also in college basketball and we are excited to be part of it,” said Ed Gold, advertising director at State Farm. “State Farm is a proud supporter of college basketball and to help launch a fixture event in Chicago that will annually honor the city’s basketball heritage and feature great hoops competition is a fantastic opportunity for us.”
Top Italian soccer club AS Roma appointed Las Vegas-based One Entertainment to serve as its licensing agent in the US and Canada. “North America is a key part of our international expansion plans,” says Laurent Colette, CMO, AS Roma. “We are excited to partner with One Entertainment in the licensing area. Their long-time involvement in the North American soccer market provides an ideal experience and platform to bring AS Roma to our fans in this region.” The first AS Roma products are expected to be available for Christmas 2016 and expand throughout 2017.
ESPN is launching new mobile-first multi-sport digital offerings in India in collaboration with Sony Pictures Networks India. The new site and app will carry video content for sporting events from SONY LIV, SPN’s digital streaming platform, and SPN’s new SONY ESPN sports channels. India is the first market outside the United States to see the launch of a localized edition of ESPN’s signature app.
Comcast Xfinity made an investment into the eSports space, announcing official sponsorships with ESL and North American professional gaming organization Evil Geniuses. The deals will offer Xfinity branding opportunities at industry broadcasts, tournaments and events, and will outfit EG’s training facilities with Gigabit Pro Internet service and the company’s flagship video product, Xfinity X1. As an official ESL partner, Xfinity naming and branding will be integrated immediately in Halo Championship Series: Pro League Season 1 and this weekend’s Heroes of the Storm Live Finals in LA. EG training facilities in Alameda, CA and Bloomington, IL will be installed with Xfinity products and branding will also appear on team jerseys, social channels, during live streams and across all player appearances.
Germany’s leading multimedia sports platform SPORT1 is partnering with ESL for a media partnership for ESL One Frankfurt 2016. On Sunday, SPORT1 will show the final of Europe’s biggest Dota 2 festival exclusively on free-TV. SPORT1 will also carry Dota 2 for the first time live on German free-TV.
