IN THE NEWS
NBC hit the brakes on “American Auto” after two seasons. Series creator Justin Spitzer tweeted that season three of the comedy would have shown Katherine Hastings and Payne Motors “finally finding success and taking the world by storm,” adding, “I’m so sorry we didn’t get to make those episodes, but I’m immensely proud of the 23 episodes of the show we did put out there.” “American Auto” averaged 2 million total viewers its second season, down from 2.17 million for its freshman run.
Apple TV+ won’t be moving forward with Sam Esmail’s adaptation of the 1927 classic film “Metropolis.” While the start of the big budget UCP production had been slated for summer, and work had begun in Australia, the costs tied to delaying production due to the writers’ strike prompted UCP to cancel the project.
Spotify and Archewell Audio are no longer in business together – and not everyone’s happy with the way things went down. While a joint statement from Spotify and Archewell’s Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex said, “Spotify and Archewell Audio have mutually agreed to part ways and are proud of the series we made together,” podcast host and head of podcast innovation and monetization Bill Simmons has a different take. Calling the royals “grifters” on his self-titled podcast, Simmons said, “I have got to get drunk one night and tell the story of the Zoom I had with Harry to try and help him with a podcast idea.” The partnership, launched in December 2020, yielded one series and a holiday special.
Pay TV will be in 38% of US homes by 2027, down from 100 million in 2016, according to a projection from PwC. Revenue from the OTT market will rise from $49 billion in 2022 to $57 billion this year, and hit $75.5 billion by 2027. “The biggest tectonic move continues to be the rise of ad-supported streaming. AVOD will be the main driver of growth in the US OTT sector across the forecast period,” according to the report.
A preliminary ANA report on the programmatic media system found waste of $13 billion or more, due mainly to inefficiencies. The report points to lack of data, and noted that while the average campaign runs on 44,000 websites, advertisers can reach 95% of audiences on a few hundred websites. An in-depth study will be released later this year.
Netflix news: At its fan event in Brazil, in addition to airing first-looks and teasers for upcoming seasons, the streamer announced the season two renewal of “Fubar,” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger…. Schwarzenegger’s “Terminator” co-star, Linda Hamilton has joined the cast of “Stranger Things” for the series’ fifth and final season….”3 Body Problem,” a sci-fi drama from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (“Game of Thrones”) will premiere in January 2024, while season seven of Spanish YA drama “Elite” launches October 20.
During the first quarter of 2023, TikTok became the first mobile app to surpass $1 billion across iOS and Google Play in a single quarter, according to Data.ai. And its business model is key. “The social video giant has built a large and loyal fan base, allowing it to forgo the reliability of the subscription model and instead rake in billions of dollars with TikTok coins,” said Data.ai. “This is likely to have caught the attention of other social platforms that have not yet cracked monetization beyond ads.”

Alexander McCaskill, the producer responsible for a Fox News chyron that called President Joe Biden a “wannabe dictator,” has left the building. “Today was my last day at Fox,” posted McCaskill on Instagram last week. “It’s been a wild 10 years and it was the best place I’ve ever worked because of the great people I met. But the time has come. I asked them to let me go, and they finally did.”
As for that chyron, which said, “Wannabe dictator speaks at the White House after having his political rival arrested” under photos of Biden and Donald Trump the day of Trump’s arraignment, Fox News said it was “taken down immediately and was addressed.”
Susan Lucci and Maury Povich will receive lifetime achievement awards at the 50th Daytime Emmy Awards. “Both of them have had astonishing success and deep impact on the world of daytime television, Susan in drama series and Maury in talk, and have left their indelible marks on the industry,” said NATAS President and CEO Adam Sharp. The ceremony, originally set for June 16, was postponed due to the WGA strike.
