After years of controversy, the Golden Globes have been acquired by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will shut down. HFPA members impacted by the change will be converted to employees of a for-profit business. Said Jay Penske, CEO, Chairman and Founder, Penske Media, and CEO of Dick Clark Productions, “As stewards of the Golden Globe Awards, our mission is to continue creating the most dynamic awards ceremony on live television viewed across the world. We have a great team in place to grow this iconic brand and captivate new and existing audiences to celebrate the very best in television and motion pictures.” The new owners will establish the Golden Globe Foundation to continue the HFPA’s tradition of charitable giving.

Fox News attorneys sent a cease and desist letter to Tucker Carlson after the launch of “Tucker on Twitter,” reports Axios. FNC, which fired Carlson in April, contends its former anchor’s new Twitter show is violating the terms of a contract that is in effect until January 2025. A new episode slated for release today will offer Carlson’s response to indictment of Donald Trump, tweeted Carlson’s producer, Justin Wells. As for the legal letter, “Tucker will not be silenced by anyone,” read a statement from Carlson attorney Harmeet K. Dhillon.

Nearly 9 in 10 kids surveyed said they consume YouTube content and 66% of those views happen on connected TV, according to Precise TV’s Precise Advertiser Report: Kids. Respondents also say they recall YouTube ads more than twice as much as broadcast TV. Additional trends include:
· YouTube Shorts is growing in popularity with half of kids watching YouTube revealing they also watch YouTube Shorts.
· More than 30% of respondents remember seeing ads on YouTube Shorts.
· 70% of kids have bought or asked to buy something they have seen advertised on TikTok.
“These findings support a trend we’re experiencing where brands are shifting TV dollars to social video to grab household attention and drive business outcomes,” said Christian Dankl, Precise TV Co-Founder and Chairman. “For advertisers marketing to families, it’s now table stakes to have an advanced, contextual, video-level digital ad targeting strategy.”

Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment has greenlit sneaker lifestyle meets hip-hop series “Just for Kicks.” From producer/director Rhyan LaMarr and Antoine Wade, the show features entertainment and NBA stars including Allen Iverson, Jordan Clarkson, Rich the Kid, Bun B, Barton Fitzpatrick, and more. “Just for Kicks” is being produced in association with CSSE advertising division Crackle Connex, which will integrate brands into the series, for a summer debut on Crackle.

Creative Chaos (“King of Cool)” is partnering with Geena Davis (“Thelma & Louise”) and the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media to adapt their documentary “This Changes Everything” for Canada. Quebec-based Poutine Studios, along with Palmina Productions, are onboard to produce.

Animation house Lil Critter Workshop has launched Lil Critter Digital, an animation production studio out of Malaysia. It’s first project is “Lawak Campus: School Daze,” a comedy series for tweens.

Marblemedia has started production in Toronto on a new teen comedy series, “Davey & Jonesie’s Locker,” created by Evany Rosen, who also serves as showrunner. The show has been co-commissioned by Prime Video in Canada, Australia and New Zealand and Hulu in the US.

Olivia Swann (“DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”) and Todd Lasance (“Spartacus: War of the Damned”) landed the leads in “NCIS: Sydney,” headed to Paramount+ and Australia’s Network 10.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Male revue stage show Australia’s Thunder from Down Under launch their home renovation business in HGTV’s “Flip the Strip,” premiering Monday, July 10, at 10p. Vegas headliners by night and tradesman by day will work with interior designer Kelly Stone to transform clients’ humdrum homes into glitzy desert oases.

ViX’s “Senda Prohibida” (Forbidden Path), a reboot of the first telenovela produced in Mexico, launches Friday, June 23 with all seven episodes. All users will be able to watch the first episode for free the day of the premiere; the full series will be available on ViX’s Premium tier.

Season two of HBO drama “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” premieres Sunday, August 6 at 9p. This season focuses on the period following the NBA team’s Finals in 1980 through 1984, culminating in the first professional rematch of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

The full season of “1883,” the “Yellowstone” origin story that premiered on Paramount+ in December 2021, will air weekly on Paramount Network beginning Sunday, June 18 at 8p. The special broadcast will include extended featurettes at the end of each episode.

“Search Party with Brandon Jordan” kicks off Sunday, June 18 at 9p on The Weather Channel. The series, hosted by treasure hunter and influencer Jordan, follows deep dive exploration.

TECH TALK

On her first day as CEO of Twitter, former NBCU ad honcho Linda Yaccarino tweeted her answer to the question: Why Twitter? “We have the opportunity to reach across aisles, create new partnerships, celebrate new voices, and build something together that can change the world,” she wrote. “From what I can tell so far, we’re built for this.”

A Twitter update slated for this week is intended to drastically reduce DM spam by keeping users who aren’t Twitter Blue subscribers from sending DMs to people who don’t follow them. This also applies to creating group chats. “It is increasingly difficult to distinguish between AI bots,” tweeted Elon Musk. “The only ‘social networks’ that survive will be those that require verification.”

As thousands of Reddit communities temporarily shut down in protest of changes Reddit is making to its API, the platform suffered a major outage on Monday. “A significant number of subreddits shifting to private caused some expected stability issues, and we’ve been working on resolving the anticipated issue,” said Reddit in a statement. The subreddit blackout is aimed at forcing the company to abandon its plan to start charging developers to access its Application Programming Interrace, which is needed to run the apps, starting June 19.

Video and CTV adtech company Tremor International announced the rebranding of the products and platforms within its portfolio as Nexxen. The new identity encompasses the combined demand-side platforms Amobee and Tremor Video, the supply-side platform Unruly and the CTV ad server, Spearad. Moving forward, these business units will operate as the Nexxen DSP, Nexxen SSP and Nexxen Ad Server, respectively. The Nexxen SSP and the Nexxen Ad Server will go to market collectively as Nexxen CTRL.

Dreamscape has entered into an agreement to acquire Mediaocean’s global media planning tool, Lumina. Lumina helps improve media plan workflow and visibility between brands and agencies through an end-to-end system. In tandem with this, and following the previous strategic acquisitions of Standard Media Index and SQAD, Dreamscape has rebranded to Guideline. “By combining SQAD and SMI a year ago, Guideline became a source of truth for advertising spend and pricing data that provides unprecedented accuracy and transparency across the global media ecosystem,” said Scott Knoll, CEO of Guideline. “Now with this acquisition, we are forging an important partnership with Mediaocean and bringing together two complementary solutions – SQAD MediaTools and Lumina – to strengthen media planning capabilities for agency and brand clients globally.”

PBS’s annual special “A Capitol Fourth” will be hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro, with performances by Chicago, Boyz II Men, Belinda Carlisle and more, and an appearance by the Muppets. The live event kicks off July 4 at 8p.

Xfinity is offering customers a Black Music Month selection of free films, concerts, and podcasts from Revolt, Lifetime Movie Club, and Qwest TV for free this week. Among the programming featured are “Whitney,” available on Lifetime Movie Club, REVOLT Black News, and “BB King – Live in Nice” on Qwest TV.

TheGrio’s “4th Annual Freedom Forward: Juneteenth Special will feature performances from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and Jamar Langley from “The Voice,” as well as comedian Roy Wood Jr. and journalist Robin Roberts, among others, on Monday, June 19 across theGrio digital platforms including YouTube and theGrio.com.

FOX Nation will release a new comedy special starring “SNL” alum Rob Schneider. “Rob Schneider: Woke Up in America” drops Sunday, June 18.

STREAMING

A new trade group, The Independent Streaming Alliance, announced its official formation. The group will leverage their reach to work collaboratively with consumers, platforms, regulators, and media. Founding members include Allen Media Group, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, Cineverse, Future Today, kweliTV, Revry, Scripps, Tastemade, TMB (Trusted Media Brands), and Vevo. “The formation of the ISA is long overdue,” said Philippe Guelton, Chief Revenue Officer at Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. “We are joining forces to promote the value of independent streamers, and to work hand-in-hand with platforms, advertisers, and regulatory bodies to ensure that we have a healthy ecosystem that benefits everyone, not just the few.”

MGM and Warner Bros. Discovery are adding 23 FAST channels to Amazon Freevee. Among the 11 WBD offerings will be “Cake Boss,” “Say Yes to the Dress” and “Ghost Brothers.” Channels from Amazon-owned MGM will include “The Pink Panther, “MGM Presents” and “The Outer Limits,” among others.

FilmRise has licensed the North American AVOD and FAST rights to the first season of “Truthseekers” from BIG MEDIA. The historical docuseries looks at enduring mysteries.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

The US Senate has opened an inquiry into the deal between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, chair of the Homeland Security investigative subcommittee, demanded an array of records related to the proposed merger. Blumenthal pointed to Saudi Arabia’s “deeply disturbing” human rights record and expressed concern over a foreign government entity assuming control over an American institution.

TelevisaUnivision and soccer league Liga MX announced PATRIA Energy Drink as the “Official Energy Drink Sponsor” of Liga MX in the US. The partnership includes a multi-year agreement providing PATRIA with rights to activate under Liga MX’s various designations, including significant positions around major tentpole moments, beginning with the Campeón de Campeones match on Sunday, June 25 where the brand will have an onsite fan activation.

TuneIn has partnered with Formula 1 to become an Official Audio Broadcaster of Formula 1 racing. The agreement offers TuneIn Premium listeners in the US and Canada access to audio coverage of every practice, qualifying and race of the 2023 FIA Formula One World Championship™.

ESPN director Kyle Brown suffered a medical emergency on June 10 during an NCAA baseball game in Winston Salem, NC that caused his death. He was 42. “A 16-year ESPN employee, Kyle was a deeply admired member of our production team — and highly accomplished, having captured two Sports Emmy Awards while working a multitude of sports from baseball and basketball to ‘Monday Night Football’ and college football,” ESPN said in a statement.
