IN THE NEWS

Gray Television is asking the FCC for actions that include classifying OTT video providers as MVPDs for retransmission consent purposes. In a presentation to the FCC commissioner, Gray counsel and former FCC commissioner Robert McDowell said that “quirks” in copyright law and FCC regulations enable OTT services to avoid negotiating retransmission consent with individual stations. Gray is also pushing to exclude local news from the FCC rule that requires a station that provides more than 15% of programming to another, to be treated as co-owned and subject to limits on duopolies. “Excluding local news from this limitation would incentivize stronger stations to supply local news programming to weaker stations and increase the amount of local news content aired in the market,” said McDowell.

HBO Max’s long-awaited “Friends: The Reunion” was watched by an estimated 29% of US streaming households the day it was released, May 27. According to TVision, the audience for the special, delayed by a year due to the pandemic, was 55.4% female and 50% among A35-54.

Actor Gavin MacLeod died May 29 at age 90. Best known for playing Murray Slaughter on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and Captain Stubing on “The Love Boat,” MacLeod more recently guested on shows including “Jag,” “Touched by an Angel” and “Oz,” and hosted Trinity Broadcasting Network’s “Back on Course” with his wife. “My heart is broken,” posted MacLeod’s friend and “MTM Show” co-star Ed Asner. “Gavin was my brother, my partner in crime (and food) and my comic conspirator.”

Simon Cowell, creator of the original version of “The X Factor” in Britain, has canceled his appearances as a judge on the local version in Israel. While producer Reshet did not give a reason for the decision, it comes amid renewed violence in the region.

Former Democratic Party chairwoman Donna Brazile has jumped from Fox News to ABC News as a contributor. Brazile joined FNC in 2019.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Apple gave a straight-to-series order to “The Big Door Prize,” a comedy based on the novel by M.O. Walsh from David West Read (“Schitt’s Creek”), Skydance Television and CJ ENM/Studio Dragon. The series is set in a small town that has a machine that can predict the future.

Kapital Entertainment scored rights to adapt “I Don’t Forgive You,” the upcoming tale from former police reporter Aggie Blum Thompson, into a series. Aaron Kaplan is exec producing with Mandalay’s Peter Guber.

Adam Mllch (“The Morning Show”) has been set as showrunner for Fox anthology project “Icon,” profiling music legends. Season one will center on Naomi and Wynonna Judd.

UK producer Charlie Hanson has been booted from Netflix’s “After Life” after accusations of sexual misconduct surfaced from 11 women. “Whilst the allegations are unrelated to his time on the show, we immediately removed him from the production and referred the matter to the police,” said a spokesperson for the Ricky Gervais comedy. Hanson labeled the accusations “demonstrably false.”

Casting notes: Rupert Evans (“Charmed”) has joined season two of Netflix drama “Bridgerton,” as the clan’s late patriarch… Gabrielle Dennis (“A Black Lady Sketch Show”) landed a lead in NBC pilot “Someone Out There,” based on a Spanish format…Lyne Renee (“Motherland: Fort Salem”) will recur in HBO Max’s “Gossip Girl” reboot…Miles Teller (“Too Old to Die Young”) is taking over for Armie Hammer in Paramount+ series “The Offer.” Hammer exited the project amid allegations of sexual assault…Freddie Stroma (“Bridgerton”) is replacing Chris Conrad in HBO Max movie “Suicide Squad.” Conrad left the role due to creative differences.
