Good morning. It’s Thursday May 26, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Conference USA’s newest broadcast deal will see a quartet of partners divvy up rights in multiple multiyear agreements for its football, basketball games and other sports. The conference’s partners now include ESPN, CBS Sports, beIN Sports as well as American Sports Network. ESPN’s deal will include five regular season football games as well as the CUSA championship games this year and in 2017. Returning partner CBS Sports Network carries football and men’s basketball games, including for the first time, the Men’s Basketball Conference Championship game, along with six football and six men’s basketball games per year. ASN’s deal will showcase 15 football games, 13 regular-season men’s basketball games and two women’s basketball games per season, along with various Olympic sports. beIN Sports, meanwhile, gets into the college football business with the contract, and will also feature men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball.
“Our commitment to expand beIN SPORTS’ domestic programming is demonstrated with the addition of Conference USA, bringing U.S. viewers elite NCAA Division I sports to enjoy on their TV screens and mobile devices,” said Yousef Al-Obaidly, Deputy CEO of beIN Media Group. “This strategic partnership will provide our fans with a diverse selection of collegiate sports for the first time ever on our network, including fan favorites such as football, basketball and baseball.”
TNT pillar Craig Sager will be the recipient of this year’s Jimmy V Perseverance Award on July 13 at The 2016 ESPYS on ABC. Battling leukemia, Sager is in his 24th season as a sideline reporter for the NBA on TNT. “One of those pieces of inspiration has come from Jim Valvano himself. I have his speech saved on my phone and, now 23 years later, its impact lives on with me and countless others. There is no greater honor than receiving this award and I am very humbled,” Sager said.
Meanwhile, TNT’s Game 4 between the Thunder and Warriors on Tuesday, followed by the Inside the NBA post-game show ranked as the top two programs of the night across all of cable television for the third time this series. The game telecast averaged 8.6 million total viewers and a 5.4 US rating, based on Nielsen Fast Nationals, while Inside the NBA averaged a 2.8 score. The matchup grew 38% in viewers and 35% in rating over last year’s NBA Eastern Conference Finals Game 4 coverage and up 34% in viewers and 29% in rating when compared with the 2014 Western Conference Finals.

USA Network announced that WWE’s Smackdown will shift to Tuesdays on the channel starting July 19 from 8-10p, running live for the first time ever. With the decision to go live, USA Network will now offer five hours of live WWE programming a week. Currently, Smackdown is averaging 2.674MM P2+ and 1.058MM P18-49+ L7. "WWE’s flagship programs will both leverage the incredible depth of our talent roster, distinct storylines and the unpredictable nature of live TV," said WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon. “This move will undoubtedly build more excitement and deepen engagement with our fans around the world.”
Just ahead of the 100-year anniversary of the Indianapolis 500, ABC’s telecast of the Sunday’s race will now run live across the entire United States with yesterday’s announcement by Indianapolis Motor Speedway of the first complete sellout in the history of the iconic event. Indianapolis ABC affiliate WRTV-TV will now air the race live, while WRTV-TV also will continue its traditional 7p re-air.
ESPN’s broadcast slate of The Basketball Tournament presented by Jack Link’s Protein Snacks is being expanded to include three games on ESPN, six games on ESPN2, two games on ESPNU, and four games on ESPN3 to mark the most ever. Of the 11 games on TV, seven will run in primetime on either ESPN or ESPN2 beginning July 21.
Showtime is suing Top Rank Inc. for an alleged failure to live up to an indemnification agreement, according to THR. The move surrounds last year’s Floyd Mayweather/Manny Pacquiao battle with Showtime now claiming that with Pacquiao admitting that he fought with an injury, Showtime ended up a co-defendant in subsequent lawsuits. "Under an agreement among SNI, TRI and others, TRI was obligated to defend and indemnify SNI," the complaint reads. "But at the outset of these actions, it was manifest that SNI and TRI, which was alleged to have known of and concealed the pre-fight injury, had starkly different interests. … At once, SNI demanded that TRI honor its contractual obligations to indemnify SNI and pay for SNI’s own counsel to defend it in these actions because of the manifest potential conflict between them. TRI refused."

Mountain Dew is blending NASCAR and VR as the newest portion of its DEWcision campaign, allowing fans to vote for either Baja Blast or Pitch Black. The brand is launching a NASCAR-themed VR experience, built for the latest version of Oculus Rift with interactive spots that puts viewers in the driver’s seat of a NASCAR race car next to the likes of Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kasey Kahne, or Chase Elliott. In addition, users engaging with an Oculus Rift device can steer the virtual car and pick a favorite course.
Speaking of NASCAR, Roush Fenway Racing locked in a multi-year partnership extension with primary partner the Fastenal Company to extend Fastenal’s position as the anchor partner of the No. 17 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team and driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. The deal will also see the brand increase the number of its primary races in 2017 and beyond.
LA Galaxy fans attending the upcoming “Throwback Thursday” home game against Sporting Kansas City on June 2 will be able to take part in the Alaska Airlines voucher giveaway. The first 12,000 LA Galaxy fans to enter StubHub Center will receive a flight voucher for up to 50 percent off on round-trip, non-stop Alaska Airline flights, excluding Mexico, departing Los Angeles International Airport.
NBC Olympics is launching an Olympics promotion with Fandango for an “I Love Movies: Rio Olympic Edition” digital video series, which is now out. The first three episodes of the series, available for viewing now on Fandango Movieclips on YouTube and Fandango.com, feature Olympic swimmers Ryan Lochte, Missy Franklin and Matt Grevers. The next few months will see the pair release multiple episodes with athletes from gymnastics, track and field, diving, basketball, rugby and Paralympic events, who will share their favorite, most inspiring movies.
Spike Lee’s Lil’ Joints, a short documentary series from ESPN Films, is set to return on May 31 with four new editions executive produced by Spike Lee. Topics will range from the Black Lives Matter movement on the University of Missouri campus to former NBA star Stephon Marbury’s low-cost sneaker. The films will debut on TheUndefeated.com and premiere weekly on Tuesdays.
Beijing Baidu Netcom Science and Technology Co. locked in a strategic partnership with Perform Group that will see the launch of a co-branded soccer information portal “goal.baidu.com" which combines the world’s largest digital football brand Goal.com and China’s largest search engine brand, Baidu. Baidu and Perform will collaborate to create a team of local and international digital football experts. Baidu’s subsidiary, Beijing Lehecai Technology Co. Ltd., will operate online advertising sales and marketing activities, while Goal Studios, Perform’s digital football agency, will partner with Lehecai to activate Goal’s global partnerships, including Nissan and Toyota, and help Chinese brands, clubs and rights-holders connect with international football fans.
Facebook is offering custom created Copa masks on its photo filter app MSQRD ahead of the 2016 Copa America Centenario. The masks will also be available on the Copa America Centenario 2016 page. Each of the 16 teams has its own custom mask which fans can use to “paint” their faces with the country’s flag and create video selfie animations and still images.
