05.25.16 Good morning. It’s Wednesday May 25, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The NFL locked down the locations for Super Bowls LIII, LIV and LV yesterday, agreeing to host the events in Atlanta, South Florida and Los Angeles, respectively. The league announced at the Spring League Meeting that Atlanta’s upcoming Mercedes-Benz Stadium would be first up for the Super Bowl in 2019, marking the third time the city has hosted the game. Left out the mix were New Orleans and Tampa Bay. The next two games will take place in Houston and Minneapolis. “We’re all interested in coming back with a great deal of enthusiasm and this is a reflection of that,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell of the league’s decision to bring the Super Bowl back to LA.
To mark the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, ABC is set to utilize 100 cameras for the race, which takes place on Sunday at 11a. Production will include three onboard cameras per car in 12 of the 33 cars competing in the race as well as four Ultra Hi Motion cameras, aerial cameras located in a blimp and a helicopter and four robotic cameras with overhead views of the pits. Sound will be captured for viewers by 287 microphones, including 235 positioned around the racetrack and 26 mounted in race cars. Viewers of the telecast will be able to use a second screen experience through a choice of live streaming video from the onboard cameras on ESPN3, which will carry the feeds exclusively through WatchESPN.
The NHL announced its schedule of dates for the 2016 Stanley Cup Final beginning May 30. All games begin at 8p and will continue on June 1, 4 and 6 with additional games slated for June 9, 12 and 15.
ESPN unveiled its lineups for this season’s SEC/Big 12 Challenge presented by Sonic as well as the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The SEC/Big 12 battle will take place on Jan. 28, 2017 and see seven of the 10 games carried on ESPN or ESPN2, one game on ESPN2 or ESPNU and two games set for ESPNU. Featured matchups are set to include Kansas/Kentucky as well as Texas A&M/West Virginia. The ACC/Big Ten showdown spans Nov. 28-30 and see ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU combine to televise all 14 games of the event, which will include Syracuse/Wisconsin, Michigan State/Duke, and North Carolina/Indiana.
Elsewhere on the college scene, the Pac-12 CEO Group announced plans to reduce night football games, approving a recommendation from the Pac-12 Council to modify the Conference’s TV agreements with ESPN and FOX Sports and reduce the number of Pac-12 Networks Saturday night football games that begin at 7p PT or later. A Pac-12 Network game can now start either at 2:30p or 6p and overlap with an ESPN or FOX exclusive TV window. This change is expected to reduce the number of Pac-12 Networks night games by as many as four contests.
Telemundo and NBC Universo’s Futbol Estelar simulcast of the Pachuca/Leon match hit a cumulative audience of 3.2 million viewers on Sunday, including 1.9 million adults 18-49, according to Nielsen. The broadcast averaged 1.4 million total viewers and 831,000 adults 18-49.
Exaggerator’s run to victory at the Preakness Stakes on NBC averaged 9.4 million viewers, up 6% over last year’s race, according to official national data from Nielsen. The race posted a 5.8/14 HH rating for a markup of 5% over last year’s run.

SiriusXM extended its tied with talkSPORT to carry the company’s coverage of live English Premier League, FA Cup and Capital One Cup matches through the 2018-19 season. The deal also continues SiriusXM’s distribution rights for talkSPORT’s talk programming, including Drivetime with Adrian Durham and Darren Gough and Kickoff with Mark Saggers.
PGA TOUR 2016: Nicklaus’ Masterpiece presented by Nationwide is slated to air on Sunday at 2p on CBS, ahead of the network’s final-round coverage of the Dean & Deluca Invitational. The feature is produced by PGA TOUR Entertainment and look at the 40 years of the Memorial Tournament.

Under Armour’s new deal with UCLA is one for the record books, locking in a 15-year, $280-million contract with the brand, per the report, to mark an all-time high in the space. Under Armour will now exclusively design and supply the footwear, apparel and equipment for training and game-day uniforms for all 25 of the university’s men’s and women’s varsity athletic teams starting July 1, 2017. Sports media company MP & Silva inked an agreement to create a strategic partnership with Everbright, a leading financial services company in China and Baofeng, an internet entertainment and technology company, specializing in Virtual Reality and digital entertainment, through an investment from Shanghai Jin Xin investment fund. The deal will see Shanghai Jin Xin nab a 65% equity investment in MP & Silva Group. This partnership will offer MP & Silva additional financial resources to accelerate the growth of the business and build on its success.
Soccer club Chivas Guadalajara is tapping Las Vegas-based One Entertainment to serve as its licensing agency for the US and Canada. One Entertainment will now develop the club’s off-field activities via a comprehensive merchandising program across major product categories with an expected launch date of Spring 2017.
GoPro is partnering with Red Bull for a multi-year, global partnership that includes content production, distribution, cross-promotion and product innovation. The deal will also see Red Bull receive equity in GoPro while GoPro will become Red Bull’s exclusive provider of point-of-view imaging technology for capturing immersive footage of Red Bull’s media productions and events. "Red Bull’s global scale and execution is something to be admired. This partnership is very strategic for GoPro," said Nicholas Woodman, founder and CEO of GoPro. "We share the same vision…to inspire the world to live a bigger life. While we’ve worked closely for many years, as official partners we’ll be able to more effectively help one another execute our shared vision and scale our respective businesses. Pac-12 Networks are prepping for an eSports blitz. Conference presidents and chancellors approved eSports competitions with its universities that will run on Pac-12 Networks this upcoming year and showcase teams from campuses. Tournaments will include head-to-head matchups in studios as well as a tournament in conjunction with a Pac-12 championship event. The game titles and event formats are still to be determined, but will be announced in the coming months. “eSports is a natural fit for many of our universities located in the technology and media hubs of the country,” said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott. “Pac-12 Networks’ commitment to innovation as well as its natural tie to our universities and established media platform make it the perfect organization to develop the framework for eSports intercollegiate competition.”
Rick Fox’s eSports franchise Echo Fox is partnering with marketing agency VFD eSports in a move “to connect brands with the emerging eSports franchise and its athletes.” Team Echo Fox will now officially debut new sponsorships with Tasty Whey, HyperX, TipTalk and Vertagear next month at the North America League of Legends Championship Series summer split. "We are extremely excited to partner with VFD eSports to help create the best brand partnerships and activations in the eSports world,” says Rick Fox, owner of Echo Fox. “VFD eSports has a proven track record across the biggest sporting leagues and is helping to bridge the gap for brands to understand how to activate in this sphere."
