Good morning. It’s Tuesday May 17, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

The WTA locked in a five-year deal that spans multiple territories with beIN Media Group, handing the company rights to all WTA tournaments, including 21 Premier events in over 30 territories, including the US, Spain, Australia and pan-regionally throughout the Middle East and North Africa. The deal launches in 2017 and covers all live matches, replays, highlights and the weekly WTA magazine shows. During its upfront presentation, the network also announced plans for MotoAmerica, the NASL and MMA, along with CONMEBOL and CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers, LaLiga, Serie A and Ligue 1.

Dubbing it a “technological marvel” and "a real glimpse at the future of television," Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts set the bar high for expectations for this summer’s Olympic Games, which will see NBCUniversal offer around 6,000 hours of combined Rio Games coverage across its channels and via NBC Sports Live. Meanwhile, Roberts points to Comcast’s X1 platform as groundbreaking and offer viewers access to nearly every event with an augmented viewing experience. NBCU’s Olympics coverage will be augmented by the Xfinity Sports app with viewers able to search events through categories such as athletes and countries with real-time updates and statistics.

Univision Deportes saw the Super Clasico Liga MX quarterfinals reach 7.8 million Total Viewers for the two matches. The second leg of the Super Clasico between America and Chivas on Sunday averaged 2.7 million Total Viewers with 1.6 million Adults 18-49. The viewership marked the best for any Liga MX playoff match since the 2014 Apertura Final on Univision Network.

NBCUniversal notched a ratings record for Championship Sunday last weekend, with the blitz of 10 games across 10 different NBCUniversal networks (plus one match apiece for its Spanish-language networks) generating a combined 1.57 metered market rating on the 10 English-language networks, according to Nielsen. That is up 10% over last year’s numbers. Meanwhile, NBC Sports Group carries the final match of the 2015-16 Premier League season, Manchester United/Bournemouth today at 3p on NBCSN. Top markets: Knoxville, Tulsa, West Palm Beach, Baltimore and Indianapolis.

Speaking of NBC Sports, NBCSN’s Game 1 presentations of the Western Conference Final last night and the Eastern Conference Final on Friday night marked the second- and third-best Conference Final Game 1 overnight ratings ever on the network. Sunday’s Sharks/Blues battle hit a 1.26 overnight rating, second all-time out of 14 Conference Final Game 1s in NBCSN history. Friday’s Lightning/Penguins battle hit a 1.24 overnight rating to rank third all-time.

In other ratings news, ESPN’s Saturday tip-off of the 2016 WNBA season ranked as the highest-rated, regular-season WNBA game on the ESPN networks (excluding ABC) since 2011, and the highest-rated, regular-season weekend WNBA game on the ESPN networks (excluding ABC) since 2005. The telecast delivered a 0.4 overnight rating.

Tennis Channel is lining up its most comprehensive French Open coverage in television history from May 22-June 5, carrying nearly 80% of all live French Open hours on television this year. Overall, the network will dedicate more than 325 total hours to the two-week competition, with another 500 hours available digitally with total live match hours now hitting 110. The network is also adding close to 100 hours of Roland Garros qualifying matches on air and on digital subscription service Tennis Channel Plus this week. This year typical Roland Garros schedule begins with live matches from 5a and running to approximately 3p.  From 3p-5a, the network will show encore matches from the day.

beIN Sports and beIN SPORTS en Espanol unveiled nominations for the 4th edition of The Locker Room Awards, set to take place on May 23. The 2016 showing runs at 9p on the Spanish-language channel and at 10:30p on the English platform.

StubHub became the first announced sponsor to lock in a deal for the NBA’s jersey patch opportunity, inking with the 76ers in deal that will see its logo on jerseys starting in 2017. The brand will pay $5 million a year for the 2.5-by-2.5-inch patch, according to reports.

USA Swimming is taking the “Finding Nemo” mantra to “Just keep swimming” to heart, announcing a partnership with “Nemo” sequel “Finding Dory,” Disney and Pixar to encourage families around the country to find Dory and to find a swim team through the SwinToday program. The first phase of the campaign will see 10 industry partners work together to show non-swimmers and their parents why swimming is the #FunnestSport. Activations will include a “Finding Dory” ad will be in the commemorative Olympic preview edition of Splash Magazine and an advanced screening of the film for U.S. National Team members in conjunction with the Arena Pro Swim Series in Santa Clara, cross promotion on Disney, Swim Today and USA Swimming social media channels and group sales opportunities for USA Swimming teams and SwimToday partners.

Heineken gears up for the second MLS Heineken Rivalry Week with plans that include the Heineken House and a custom, life-sized foosball table. The LA Galaxy Foundation will be kick off May rivalry weekend with the Heineken House, from May 20-22 and offer live viewing events and DJs for the weekend match-ups, stations that celebrate MLS rivalries and other interactive elements.

O’Reilly Auto Parts locked in a multi-year deal with Texas Motor Speedway to serve as the race entitlement sponsor for the annual April NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race beginning in 2017. The newly named O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 will be held on April 9. In addition to the traditional branding assets in race entitlement agreements, O’Reilly Auto Parts will continue as the Official Auto Parts Supplier of Texas Motor Speedway and own exclusive status in the auto parts store category.

Harley Davidson and the UFC are offering fans the “Ultimate Experience” through June 1 with fans who register at H-D.com/UFC able to win various prizes that include two 2017 Harley-Davidson Motorcycles of their choice; two vouchers towards Harley-Davidson Riding Academy; a chance to learn to ride a Harley with UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier or UFC strawweight contender Paige VanZant at a local H-D Riding Academy and a trip for two to Las Vegas to see UFC 200.


Audio network TuneIn released its talent lineup for its new show covering the 2016 Major League Baseball season on the “MLB on TuneIn” station. LaTroy ‘Hawk’ Hawkins, Ned Colletti, Geoff Blum and Holden Kushner are joining to offer live daily coverage to the platform station. Hawkins, Colletti and Blum will rotate in the analyst role beside Kushner Monday through Friday from 7p-midnight.


The Pro Gaming League’s Tavern Tales announced plans for its summer edition, dangling $25,000 and 43 Hearthstone Championship Tour points from July 29-31. The tournament will feature a field of 32 competitors, with a top prize of $8,000 and 15 HCT points.

FC Schalke 04 made it officials, announcing the acquisition of its own pr League of Legends LCS team. Starting June 2, the new roster will compete against the best European teams in the League of Legends Championship Series. “We acted quickly in order to be able to participate in the upcoming summer split. Our players are hungry for success, talented and passionate about every match they play”, says Tim Reichert, Head of Esports at Schalke. “By completely integrating a team of professional Esports contestants into our club structures we are aiming to set new standards for the scene.”


ESPN promoted Nate Ravitz to Vice President of Audience Development where he will oversee programming of digital content across ESPN.com and the ESPN App, in addition to his existing responsibilities leading ESPN-branded social media content, mobile push notifications and digital video.
