Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 13, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Major League Soccer and U.S. Soccer laid out details of their new media rights deals with ESPN, FOX Sports and Univision Deportes. The eight-year deals, reportedly averaging around $90 million per year, will see matches locked in through the end of 2022. For the first time in league history, all three television partners will feature an exclusive MLS Match of the Week, with ESPN and FOX Sports 1 offering back-to-back MLS matches on Sundays at 5p and 7p respectively. The Univision family of networks will offer the game on Friday evenings — primarily on UniMas as well as a wrap-up show on Sundays. Overall, more than 125 MLS matches will be televised annually on the three networks.
Meanwhile, MLS’ out-of-market package, currently serviced through the MLS Live and MLS Direct Kick packages, will now be available via ESPN3 and WatchESPN. The MLS out-of-market package will also be available via over-the-top services such as Google Play, iTunes Apple TV, Roku and others.
As for the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams, all three networks will carry matches with ESPN and FOX Sports 1 splitting the English-language Men’s National Team broadcast package of approximately 10 games per year, as well as sharing the schedule of Women’s National Team games. Univision Deportes is the exclusive Spanish language home of U.S. Soccer, broadcasting all of the U.S. Men’s National Team games, and a minimum of four Women’s National Team matches each year during the term.
Meanwhile, CBS Sports and NFL Network confirmed yesterday’s report on pre- and post-game plans for broadcasts of Thursday Night Football. As expected, host James Brown will be joined by analysts Deion Sanders and Bill Cowher for coverage for all 15 weeks, starting at 7:30p. The show will air on CBS and be simulcast on NFL Network on weeks 2-8, and on NFL Network during weeks 9-16. Brown, Cowher and Sanders will also provide halftime coverage. The networks will utilize two sets each week on location with one set in the stadium, while the other set outside the venue.
Getting back to soccer (and there’s lots of it today), NBCUniversal’s simultaneous blast of 10 Premier League games as part of Championship Sunday set a ratings record for the event, with matches posting a combined 1.56 metered market rating on the 10 English-language networks, according to Nielsen.
FOX made its upfront pitch yesterday, with a heavy dose of sports in the spotlight. FOX Sports President and COO Eric Shanks stated that the company’s sports programming topped 68 million viewers a week, with its NFL contests scoring at the top with women. "We believe we have the strongest brand in sports," said Shanks.
beIN SPORTS unveiled its 2014-2015 programming schedule during its first-ever upfront event yesterday with a heavy dose of soccer including the 2015 Copa America, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1. "beIN SPORTS launched in the U.S. with the mission of providing the top sports content to one of the biggest media markets in the world, and to put fans in front of the sports they want," said Antonio Briceno, Deputy Managing Director of beIN SPORTS North America. "In just two short years, we have made huge strides towards achieving that goal by bringing viewers over 3,000 hours of live coverage and more premium international content across our various platforms."
With more Nielsen numbers in, NFL Media reports record numbers for the three days of the NFL Draft across all platforms. NFL Network ended up with a .79 household rating with 1.24 million viewers both all-time bests for the network. Compared to last year’s coverage, the channel was up 27% in average rating and 33% in average viewers. In total, coverage of the 2014 NFL Draft on NFL Network, combined with ESPN & ESPN2, reached 45.7 million people across the three days. On the digital front, NFL Media saw 44 million visits: for a 41% climb over 2013.
ESPN’s coverage of the WBC World Heavyweight Championship fight between Bermane "B. Ware" Stiverne and Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola delivered a 0.8 overnight Nielsen rating. That’s good enough to rank as the highest-rated fight on any ESPN network since 2003. Top 5 markets included New Orleans with a 4.1, followed by San Antonio, San Diego, Providence and Fort Myers.
ESPN continues its countdown to the 2014 FIFA World Cup this week, which brings us under the 30-day mark, with weeklong programming that includes the debut of Inside; US Soccer’s March to Brazil as well as a one-hour E:60 World Cup special. Programming will also see ESPN Classic re-air 21 World Cup, World Cup Qualifying and friendly matches throughout the week.

Pepsi is bringing together filmmakers and singers in honor of the World Cup. The company is releasing a visual album that features the likes of Spike Lee, Timbaland, Idris Elba and Kelly Rowland for the album Beats of the Beautiful Game, set to be released June 10 with a slate of 11 songs and short films. Each week, a new track and short film will be released from the album starting May 20.
The top three NFL rookie jerseys, according to the AP, coming out of the draft are Jonny Manziel, Michael Sam and first-overall pick Jadeveon Clowney. The league reports that nearly as Manziel jerseys sold from Thursday to Sunday as it did for Robert Griffin III, Andrew Luck and Tim Tebow combined during their respective draft weekends.
Sony Corporation, an official FIFA partner, is launching One Stadium Live, a social network site targeting soccer fans around the world ahead of the World Cup. The platform looks to pull together football-related social media content from Twitter, Facebook and Google+ into a single platform, organizing topics and posts from around the world. In addition, it will offer team profiles for each of the 32 World Cup teams as well as offer a second screen experience with a real-time, filtered stream of what all fans around the world are saying about that particular game.
