05.10.16 Good morning. It’s Tuesday May 10, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With Mike Tirico off to NBC, ESPN filled the void on Monday Night Football by naming Sean McDonough as the new play-by-play voice for the franchise where he will join Jon Gruden and reporter Lisa Salters for the new NFL season. McDonough has worked with the likes of college football, college basketball and Major League Baseball for the channel in recent years and has called NFL games for ESPN Radio since 2013. McDonough will continue his ESPN college basketball assignments after the NFL season.
Speaking of Mike Tirico, NBC Sports made his welcome official, announcing that he will join the company on July 1 and work on properties that include Sunday Night Football, NBC’s new Thursday Night Football slate, the Summer and Winter Olympics, select golf telecasts, and other events. In a call with reporters, Tirico stated that the opportunity working the Olympics helped him make the decision to leave ESPN. “That is something that has appealed to me as a fan, as a sportscaster, the chance to know you can be a part of it going forward and bringing it back home to the U.S. for the next few Olympic Games was right at the top of the list of things that made it impossible to turn away from this opportunity for me.”
Meanwhile, fellow former ESPN-ers Colin Cowherd and Jason Whitlock have a date for their upcoming FS1 series, Speak for Yourself. The new series will debut on June 13 at 6p against SportsCenter, according to Fox Sports’ Jamie Horowitz in an interview with the New York Times.
Finally, Ray Lewis and Cris Carter are reportedly out at ESPN, according to the Big Lead. Coming in to the company for NFL coverage will be Randy Moss, most recently with FOX Sports.
It’s the end of the road for Michel Platini at UEFA, where he will resign as UEFA president after failing to overturn his ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, according to the AP. The court cut his ban from the sport from six to four years, prompting Platini to dub the verdict a "deep injustice." The UEFA executive committee will meet next week to discuss replacing Platini with an election likely set for mid-September.

ESPN unveiled plans leading into the NCAA Division I Softball Championship, programming 11 college softball conference championship games and more than 55 conference tournament games that will span five days beginning tomorrow. The channel will then lead into the NCAA Softball Championship Selection Special Presented by Capital One on May 15 at 10p on ESPNU. The selection special will be hosted by Beth Mowins with analysts Amanda Scarborough and Michele Smith.
SiriusXM locked in 13-time PGA TOUR winner Mark Calcavecchia will host a new monthly show on the SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio channel. Golf According to Calc will debut today at 2p as part of SiriusXM’s coverage during the week of THE PLAYERS Championship.

Golf Channel and Nationwide inked a new partnership designed to “honor the legacy of tournament host and founder Jack Nicklaus, and showcase the philanthropic tradition of Nicklaus’ signature event, the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide. This deal includes Golf Channel’s Golf Central being produced live from Muirfield Village Golf Club, and Morning Drive providing live hits from onsite. The multi-year partnership will also see Golf Channel provide custom content surrounding the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide through its on-air and online platforms, highlighted by the tournament’s charitable components and beneficiaries, including Nationwide Children’s Hospital and its Patient Champion Program.
The NBA and Mountain Dew are launching Dew NBA 3X, the league’s first-ever nationwide elite 3×3 basketball competition tour. The event will hit six NBA markets between May and October with winning teams qualifying for the 2017 USA Basketball 3×3 Tournament. The action beings on May 21 in Atlanta and conclude Oct. 23 in LA with other spots in Miami, Dallas, Chicago, and Houston. At every Dew NBA 3X tour stop, Mountain Dew will create a pop-up gallery showcasing basketball and youth culture-themed artwork submitted by local artists and fans. Attendees will be able to take home limited-edition prints and vote for their favorites on-site.
International Speedway Corporation locked in its fifth founding partner at Daytona International Speedway, inking Axalta Coating Systems to a deal that includes naming rights for the Center injector as well as branding rights within specific areas of the “World Center of Racing” zone, the central "neighborhood" overlooking the famed start/finish line inside the new stadium. “Axalta has been a long-standing and strong sponsor of our sport for many years and we’re thrilled to welcome them as a partner at Daytona International Speedway,” said ISC Chief Executive Officer Lesa France Kennedy. “Their activation will enable us to further enhance the fan and spectator experience which is a main focus of our new stadium.”
MLB is plotting the inaugural ‘Play Ball Weekend,’ a league-wide initiative by MLB and all 30 Clubs to engage young baseball fans and celebrate youth participation in baseball and softball. The program launches May 14 and will see all 30 Clubs feature a slate of customized and unique ballpark elements with popular examples that include pre-game parades of young players on the field and cap gifts from Major League players to youth league players. Additionally, Clubs will collectively distribute more than 320,000 plastic bat & ball sets throughout the United States and Canada, both in ballparks and at community events. Organizations such as USA Baseball, ESPN, Little League International, Ripken Baseball and PONY Baseball and Softball also will support Play Ball Weekend.
The WNBA announced today the launch of WNBA League Pass, a new full-season live game out-of-market subscription package offering access to single game and team pass options for the first time. The new live game service will be available through WNBA.com and the WNBA App on iOS and Android devices. The service will be available on Apple TV and Chromecast through the WNBA App, providing users additional ways to watch WNBA games.
Dolby is getting into the eSports space, sponsoring an Overwatch tournament, Agents Rising. The event will offer up a $10,000 prize pool, making it the largest prize pool in the game’s history on May 28-29 according to MCVUK. The Blizzard title will be the first game to feature Dolby’s Atmos technology via headphones
Eclipse TV and 2K Sports are partnering on NBA 2K Road to the Finals, a syndicated one-hour eSports special. The tournament takes place on June 1 with a winning team taking home $250,000. The program’s syndicated window spans June 11-Aug. 1 with 85% of the country already cleared, including ABC, CBS, NBC, Cox, Raycom and Sinclair stations.
EA announced that the Madden NFL 17 cover athlete will be revealed on Thursday live during the 6p edition of SportsCenter on ESPN. In addition, a first look at an all-new gameplay trailer will be unveiled.
