No sooner had Tucker Carlson announced a new show on Twitter, than Elon Musk tweeted they haven’t struck a deal “of any kind whatsoever.” The former Fox News anchor, fired last month, tweeted a video announcing a “new version” of his political commentary program on the social media platform. Carlson is currently being paid by Fox News until the end of his contract and, if the recent news is true, the move would sidestep the noncompete clause that mandates he not appear on another TV network before the end of 2024 – excluding digital or streaming projects. In response, Despite his denial of a deal, Musk is clearly not averse to the idea, tweeting, “On this platform, unlike the one-way street of broadcast, people are able to interact, critique and refute whatever he or anyone may say…I hope that many others, particularly from the left, also choose to be content creators on this platform.”

In more Tucker Carlson news, the former host accused Fox News of fraud and breach of contract. In a letter sent to the network, Carlson claimed the noncompete clause in his contract is now void, allowing him to produce his own show. Referencing Carlson’s leaked text messages, which are presumed to have played a part in his exit, Axios reported the letter said, “Fox broke an agreement with Carlson not to leak his private communications to the media and not to use Carlson’s private messages ‘to take any adverse employment action against him.'”

CBS is projected to finish the 2022-23 season as the most-watched broadcast network. Currently nearing an average of 6 million primetime viewers on weeknights, the network has maintained the highest viewership per Live+SD Nielsen data through April 30. This will be the network’s 15th consecutive season on top, tying its winning streak from 1955-1970.

Disney+ lost 4 million subscribers in the first quarter of 2023. CFO Christine McCarthy said the company is “in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation,” and assured that the company “will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms.” Still, the company has narrowed its losses by $400 million, or 26% year over year.

In related news, later this year, Hulu content will be available in Disney+, for consumers that are subscribed to both services, announced CEO Bob Iger during the company’s earnings call. The three services will still be available as stand-alone services, but Iger said the single app will bring “greater opportunities for advertisers, while giving bundle subscribers access to more robust and streamlined content, resulting in greater audience engagement and ultimately leading to a more unified streaming experience.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Comedy Central renewed Andy Samberg’s “Digman!”. The announcement that the adult comedy series, which Samberg co-created with showrunner Neil Campbell, will have a second season coincided with its season one finale.

“Animal Control” landed a second season on Fox. The renewal of the Joel McHale-led single-camera series, and Fox’s first wholly owned live-action comedy, follows the network’s cancellation of “Call Me Kat.” No news yet on plans for Fox’s “Welcome to Flatch.”

The CW canceled the prequel “Walker: Independence” after one season. The ending of the origin story comes as the network ordered a fourth season of the original series “Walker.” But it’s not over ‘til it’s over. Said executive producer Jared Padalecki, “We are aggressively looking for a place that ‘Walker Independence’ can land.”

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Tom Holland’s “The Crowded Room” premieres June 9. The release of the first three episodes of the Apple TV+ original limited series, also starring Amanda Seyfried and Emmy Rossum, will be followed by one new episode every Friday through July 28.

Justin Hartley’s “Tracker” drama debuts next year. The survivalist drama will premiere immediately after CBS’ telecast of Super Bowl LVIII on February 11, 2024.

“Survivor” alum Kim Wolfe is back in the spotlight in HGTV’s “Why the Heck Did I Buy This House?”. Wolfe will rescue San Antonio-area homeowners suffering from buyer’s remorse in a new eight-episode season, debuting Tuesday, June 13 at 8p.

Season three of HBO’s “The Righteous Gemstones” premieres June 18. Starring John Goodman, Adam Devine and Edi Patterson, the new season will continue the story of a televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work. Created, written, co-directed, executive produced by and starring Danny McBride, the nine-episode series will be available on Max every Sunday at 10p.

PBS announced contestants for “The Great American Recipe” season two. These cooks will showcase their culinary expertise next season: Khela Brewer, Maria Givens, Salmah Hack, Relle Lum, Brad Mahlof, Abbe Odenwalder, Ted Pappas, Leanna Pierre and Mike Thomas. Each episode will challenge the cooks to present two signature dishes, hosted by Alejandra Ramos and judged by Leah Cohen, Tiffany Derry and Graham Elliot. The new season premieres June 19 at 9p on PBS, with new episodes released Mondays through August 7.

COMING UP

“Survivor” and “The Amazing Race” will each have 90-minute episodes this fall. Wednesdays will be dedicated to the two competition shows for an all-reality primetime lineup, as scripted shows are threatened during the writers’ strike.

STREAMING

ITV Studios and Virtual Brand Group are launching “The Voice Studios.” The immersive metaverse experience based on the NBC series enables fans to create their own music, show off their dance moves, compete in battles, test their musical knowledge and audition to be on an upcoming season of “The Voice.” The initiative is timed to showcase in the final weeks of the NBC series’ 23rd season.

DraftKings launched a 24/7 network on Samsung TV Plus. “DKN” is the first-of-its-kind, making DraftKings the first US sportsbook to debut a FAST channel on the platform. “In bringing together some of the most authentic sports and entertainment voices under one umbrella, DraftKings Network is the destination for ‘In on the Action’ sports fans and content they love,” said Stacie McCollum, VP, content at DraftKings. “We look forward to reaching fans with our deep roster of independent, credible and relatable voices that resonate with sports fans and the sports betting community.” The network will also be available as a video-stream on DraftKingsNetwork.com.

OUTtv launched a LGBTQ+ channel on Amazon Prime Video US. As an add-on to Prime Video subscribers for an additional $3.99 per month, with a seven-day free trial, the channel is an extension of the network’s partnership with the streamer in Canada and Australia, where OUTtv has been available since 2021. Selected titles include Stormy Daniels-hosted gay dating reality series “For the Love of DILFs,” “Hot Haus” and “Behind the Drag Queen of the Year Pageant Competition Award Contest Competition.”

GOING GLOBAL

BBC News has lost 1 million UK viewers following its international merger with BBC World News. The network’s audience reach of 9.7 million in April was down 9% from March and 23% from April 2022, though it remains the most-watched news network in the UK. Presenters Ben Brown and Jane Hill’s departures in February contributed to the network’s downward trend in viewership.

Dynamic Television sold the Australian crime series “Savage River” globally. The drama series was acquired by Paramount+ in the UK and Germany, MTV3 in Finland, TV4 in Sweden, NENT in the Netherlands and Poland, OTE in Greece, CBC Gem in Canada, Streamz in Belgium and Radio Canada in French Canada. The #1 new show on ABC Australia in 2022 starring Katherine Langford (“13 Reasons Why”) is produced by Aquarius Films in partnership with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
