IN THE NEWS

With US studios potentially looking to replace striking writers with scribes from Australia, Canada and the UK, the Australian and Canadian film and TV unions have joined their UK brethren in support of US writers. “With strike action now in force, the AWG advises members not to work on active projects within the jurisdiction of the WGA, to pitch new projects designed for production within the jurisdiction of the WGA, or to cross picket lines, actual or virtual, for the duration of the strike,” the Australian Writers’ Guild told members. The Canadian guild said it will support the strike “to the fullest extent possible.”

The WGA strike has prompted CBS to postpone an event planned for May 9 in Hollywood to announce its fall 2023 slate. “We plan to reschedule the event at a later date, and look forward to hosting you at that time,” the network told would-be attendees. CBS – which is skipping its traditional upfront event in NYC – will still release its schedule, but without the fanfare.

Among stars canceling events due to the writers’ strike is Jon Stewart, who was scheduled to take part in a conversation about Apple TV+’s “The Problem with Jon Stewart” on May 8. Darren Star, creator of Netflix’s “Emily in Paris,” skipped an FYC event held on Tuesday, the day WGA strike started.

The writers’ walkout will have “no effect whatsoever” on WWE because their writers aren’t members of WGA, said WWE CEO Nick Khan (who also expressed support for the striking writers) on an earnings call. As for WWE’s upcoming merger with Endeavor/UFC, Kahn said, “It’s something that we give a full embrace to and I can certainly represent emphatically to you on the creative that that there is no one at Endeavor or the UFC that has any interest in trying to interfere with that in any way whatsoever.”

NBC is paying writers on “The Tonight Show” the first two weeks of the strike, and host Jimmy Fallon will pick up the tab for a third week. Tweeted NBC research coordinator Sarah Kobos, “We ended up having our production meeting this morn too and @jimmyfallon was there. He got NBC to give us a second week of pay, and he will be paying us himself for a third week. We also are going to have healthcare extended through Sept.” “The Late Show with Seth Meyers” and its host are expected to follow suit.

NBCUniversal is expanding its partnership with Twitter to amplify its coverage of the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024. Announced during Twitter’s NewFront presentation, the Twitter and Paris 2024 highlights include pre-Games countdown coverage; in-game highlights; and an exclusive Twitter daily live show, produced by NBC Olympics. Content will live on the @NBCOlympics handle. “For the first time since 2018, the Olympic and Paralympic Games will return to their true glory in 2024, with full stadiums and the world’s greatest athletes competing against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Paris, where the modern Olympic Games were conceived 130 years ago,” said Joe Varvara, Global Head of Partnerships at Twitter. “Together with NBCUniversal, we’re excited to bring you new opportunities to align with the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games next summer.”

Netflix has renewed fantasy drama “Sweet Tooth” for a third and final season. Filming has wrapped in New Zealand on the ending chapter of the Warner Bros. TV-produced series, based on the DC comic books.

Nielsen introduced Nielsen ONE Content Alpha, a cross-platform solution delivering measurement of content viewing across all device types. The Alpha, which is initially focused on program level measurement across platforms, is the first iteration of Nielsen ONE Content, which will be more broadly released in late 2024. Alpha clients include AMC Networks, Disney, Horizon, IPG media agency Mediahub, Sony Pictures Television, and TelevisaUnivision. “Following the release of Nielsen ONE Ads earlier this year, Nielsen ONE Content is the next step in our journey of delivering cross-platform measurement at scale,” said Deirdre Thomas, Chief Product Officer for Audience Measurement at Nielsen. “We value the important work with our Alpha clients that will set the stage for publishers, content rights owners, advertisers and agencies, to understand the value of content, and ultimately, to drive critical content monetization and distribution business decisions.” Nielsen announced last week that it is postponing a transition to One Ads this upfront season and sticking to legacy measurement that was recently reaccredited by the MRC.

Nick Cannon (“The Masked Singer”) will sub for Jamie Foxx as season six host of Fox game show “Beat Shazam.” Foxx was hospitalized on April 11 for a “medical complication,” said his daughter, Corinne Foxx, the show DJ. “’Beat Shazam’ has been an unscripted mainstay on the Fox schedule for six seasons and counting. This season, not wanting fans of the game show to miss a minute of the fun, Nick Cannon has offered to fill in as guest host for his friends, Jamie and Corinne Foxx. Kelly Osbourne will be filling in as guest DJ,” said Fox in a statement. “Everyone at Fox Entertainment wishes Jamie well as he continues his recovery and we greatly appreciate Nick’s willingness to jump in and help this summer.”

FOX News Media, in partnership with the National Merit Scholarship Program, has selected the recipients of its fourth annual Dr. Charles Krauthammer Memorial Scholarship. The 2023 scholarship recipients are Benjamin Fuchs, the son of Marketing Promotions and Partnerships Director Debra Fuchs and Kate Parker, the daughter of video editor Joshua Parker.

Canela Media announced its plans for the coming year at the 2023 IAB NewFronts, including the roll out of Canela Connect, a proprietary data solution for advertisers, and the evolution of Canela Studios’ content strategy. The company will offer over 2,000 hours of original content for 2023-24, including season two of “Secretos de Villanas” and its spinoff, “Secretos de las Indomables.” “We’re committed to disrupting through data and content, while connecting with communities authentically,” said Isabel Rafferty Zavala, Founder and CEO of Canela Media. “Our goal is to continue to innovate not just in the content we produce for our audience, but in how our advertising partners can reach the US Hispanic audience with more precision and across the OTT ecosystem beyond our platforms, regardless of the language in which they consume content.”

Meanwhile, Diamond Sports Group has sued the Phoenix Suns and Mercury to block the teams from forming a new media outlet, saying the move breaches Diamond’s RSN agreement and bankruptcy law.

TECH TALK

The Federal Trade Commission proposed changes that would prohibit Meta from profiting from data it collects from users under the age of 18, and subject it to other expanded limitations, including in its use of facial recognition technology. “Facebook has repeatedly violated its privacy promises,” said Samuel Levine, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “The company’s recklessness has put young users at risk, and Facebook needs to answer for its failures.” The changes would apply to Meta’s other services, including Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus, as well as Facebook.

NPR has not posted on Twitter since Elon Musk slapped a misleading label on its account that said it was state-affiliated. That label – along with similar titles for PBS and the CBC – has been removed, but the companies have not resumed tweeting. In an unprompted Tuesday email to NPR, Musk appeared to be retaliating by asking, “So is NPR going to start posting on Twitter again, or should we reassign @NPR to another company?” And later, “Our policy is to recycle handles that are definitively dormant. Same policy applies to all accounts. No special treatment for NPR.” “If this is a sign of things to come on Twitter, we might soon see even more of a rapid retreat by media organizations and other brands that don’t think it’s worth the risk,” Emily Bell, a professor at Columbia Journalism School, told NPR. “It’s really an extraordinary threat to make.”
