04.28.15 Good morning. It’s Tuesday April 28, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
ESPN threw down the hammer in response to Verizon’s new Custom TV bundles for FiOS customers, which features packages offering ESPN as part of its add-on Sports package. ESPN has now filed a lawsuit in New York State Court, alleging breach of contract with Verizon and is looking to enforce contractual obligations, according to a court filing, “ESPN is at the forefront of embracing innovative ways to deliver high-quality content and value to consumers on multiple platforms, but that must be done in compliance with our agreements. We simply ask that Verizon abide by the terms of our contracts,” ESPN said in a statement.
Meanwhile, CBS Sports Network is on board and will join Verizon’s Custom TV bundle’s Sports Channel Pack starting May 1. “While consumer choice is at the heart of our Custom TV product, when customers make their choices we want them to have the best experience and the most robust package possible,” said Terry Denson, VP, content acquisition and strategy at Verizon. “The addition of CBS Sports Network does just that, with a whole suite of programming that will satisfy a sports-lover’s craving for games, features and analysis.”
Back to ESPN, the channel got a bang out of the Subway Series, with Sunday’s showing of the Mets/Yankees delivering a double-digit ratings increase, according to Nielsen. The telecast generated a 1.9 overnight rating, up 36% from the comparable game in 2014. On the local front, the game scored an 8.4 rating in the New York market, which is the best rating for a Major League Baseball telecast on ESPN in the market since the 2011 season.
Univision saw Sunday’s El Super Clasico match, simulcast on UDN, drum up an average audience 3.0 million Total Viewers 2+ and 1.7 million Adults 18-49. That makes the broadcast of the Chivas de la Guadalajara/Club America match the most-viewed regular season club soccer match in the US in over 5 years. Audiences grew 30% among Total Viewers and 20% among Adults 18-49 over last year’s game on UniMas, according to Nielsen.
CBS Sports Network landed its contenders for the Second Annual Veterans Classic. The channel announced that Florida, North Carolina, Temple and Navy would headline the 2015 showcase, with the action tipping off on Nov. 13, the opening day of the 2015 college basketball season, featuring North Carolina/Temple at 7p, followed by Florida/Navy at 9:30p.
Speaking of CBS Sports Network, We Need to Talk is set to return tonight on the channel at 10p, launching its Spring season. The episode will feature Dana Jacobson, Laila Ali, Amy Trask and Katrina Adams, who will be joined by Antonio Tarver to preview Saturday’s Mayweather/Pacquio fight, as well as former NHL player and current analyst Ron Duguay, who will discuss the NHL playoffs.
iN DEMAND revealed plans to supplement coverage of Mayweather/Pacquiao on PPV, offering cable viewers insight into the “motivations, fight prep strategies, personal insight and all manner of behind-the-scenes content” via cable providers on Free On Demand and online. Content will include seven complete recent matches featuring each champion as well as two documentary specials from Showtime in Inside Mayweather vs. Pacquiao and HBO’s Mayweather/Pacquiao: At Last. Overall, viewers will have access to more than 60 free original shows on cable and online, covering interviews with Mayweather’s and Pacquiao’s trainers and former opponents, predictions from celebrities and fighters, previous fights, memorable moments from their careers. Fight day will launch with a three-hour Countdown Show at 6p on PPV.
NBC Sports Group once again offers coverage of the 2015 IIHF World Hockey Championship from Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic with more than 40 hours of programming spanning NBCSN and NBC Sports Live Extra. Live coverage begins on NBCSN on Friday at 10a with Team USA/Finland in the first of seven preliminary-round games, which will all air on NBCSN.
On the local front, FOX Sports Kansas City is reporting record viewership for the Royals. The club’s series finale against the White Sox ranked as the most-watched event ever on the channel, locking in a new rating high for the third time in seven games. Sunday’s game averaged a 17.3 household rating/160,000 households in the Kansas City market, according to Nielsen Media Research.
HRTV takes on the Kentucky Derby beginning with live on-site coverage from beneath the Twin Spires today. The channel’s stable of announcers will include Todd Schrupp, Simon Bray, Paul LoDuca, Scott Hazelton, Donna Barton-Brothers and Caleb Keller. Programming highlights include the live premiere of "The Works" on Wednesday at 6p, offering handicappers and racing fans an overview and analysis of the latest workouts for the entire Derby field.

Sports Illustrated is heading into deeper live event waters, announcing its new event enterprise, dubbed Sports Illustrated Experience. The experiential marketing extension launches with three events this week in partnership with SLS Las Vegas. The action starts Thursday with the SI Draft Watch Party. The event will be hosted by Seth Davis at the Sayers Club, where attendees can watch the live broadcast draft and receive insights from Steven Jackson and Emmanuel Sanders. Friday and Saturday will see The Official SI Fight Weekend Party Hosted by Puff Daddy and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Models at the Foxtail Pool Club. SI’s Chris Mannix and SI Now Anchor Maggie Gray host a live show poolside featuring celebrity, athlete and swimsuit model interviews and up-to-the-minute coverage on the fight. The initiative will look to offer consumer-facing sponsored experiences and spotlight participating advertising partners.
The United States Golf Association unveiled plans for its 2015 Open For All Fan Programming and Community Activities ahead of the 115th U.S. Open Championship from June 18-21. The organization says this year’s fan-focused programming will expand the championship’s footprint to combine elements of local, regional and national significance and include the U.S. Open Championship Trophy Tour, interactive fan experiences that will take place at multiple iconic venues throughout the Seattle-Tacoma region, a Learning Science through Golf / STEM Education exhibit, an Epic Putt Challenge, and more.
The Legacy Agency is double-dipping into the Hunter family, signing Georgia State’s R.J. Hunter to a representation agreement. The agency also represents his father Ron Hunter. The deal will see TLA handle all off-the-court endeavors, including marketing, endorsements, licensing and merchandising, speaking engagements, and appearances. He is projected as a mid-to late first round pick in June’s NBA Draft.
With the countdown to the Kentucky Derby underway, NBC Sports Group is handing the social media keys to Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski. The pair is taking over one of NBC Sports’ social media accounts every day until the Derby. Today’s engagement will see the duo capture their experience packing for Derby week on NBC Sports’ Vine account. Wednesday will be Twitter, on Thursday they shift to Periscope before taking over Vine on Friday. The 141st running of the Kentucky Derby takes place on NBC on Saturday at 4p.
Ahead of the NFL Draft, Facebook is allowing a slate of prospects take over the NFL’s Facebook Page and its @NFL Instagram account. The league will reveal a new player each day to surprise its Facebook and Instagram audiences, with the initiative launched yesterday with South Carolina RB Mike Davis. Players will chronicle their day as they make the trip to Chicago and all will use the custom hashtags #DayInTheLife, #Takeover and #NFLDraft, followed by a Q&A on the NFL Facebook page.
NBC Sports Live Extra has new distribution, announcing deals to run on the Roku streaming platform and Apple TV. “This launch demonstrates NBC Sports’ ongoing commitment to provide added value to loyal fans who can now have more access to the live sporting events they love. Customers love our Apps on iPhone and iPad and we can’t wait for them to experience what we can offer on Apple TV,” said Alison Moore, GM and EVP, TV Everywhere, NBCUniversal. “TV Everywhere has proven successful with live sports programming like the NFL and the Olympics so this expansion will only continue to enhance the viewing experience and drive further engagement with the network.”
OneUp Sports launched NBA specific team apps for Apple Watch, supporting apps for the Clippers, Lakers and Raptors. The company states that the apps will look to offer fans “with a more personal presentation of schedules, scores , stats, and standing.”
Gen Media Partners is partnering with School Sports Media, a national school representation firm that offer hyperlocal community-based marketing solutions. “High school sports are embedded in the culture of America and ignite strong passion in local communities across the country,” stated Kevin Garrity, Chief Executive Officer, Gen Media Partners. “The synergies with radio allow us to create unique local and regional advertising packages and draw revenue from promotional budgets that are earmarked for local sports marketing. Our alliance with Schools Sports Media enriches the multi-level Gen Media national/regional/local approach to ad sales representation and gives us another opportunity to introduce radio to new advertisers that have not used the medium previously.”
The PGA TOUR launched its new golf fantasy game, PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf driven by Avis, the first ever to exclusively integrate the ShotLink scoring system. Starting with The Players Championship on May 7, the platform offers standard competitive categories such as choosing tournament round leaders and the overall winner, with fantasy golf players now able to compete by predicting who will become the leader in fairway ball striking, long approach shot play and short approach performance for each tournament round. Scoring is live and in real time through ShotLink.
MLG is giving lip service to its eSports app, announcing that gamers will now be able to “join the conversation while you watch your favorite streamers from your iOS and Android powered devices anytime, anywhere.” MLG.tv users can now chat while watching gaming content from Major League Gaming and professional players around the world.
For the second year in a row, ChyronHego signed on to serve as the exclusive broadcast technology sponsor of the 36th Annual Sports Emmy Awards. The ceremony takes place on May 5 and will honor George Bodenheimer, former ESPN executive chairman and president, with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Sports. SAP announced the upcoming launch of the SAP Sports One solution for soccer, set to debut this summer. The tech will become “the first sports-specific cloud solution powered by the SAP HANA platform” with an eye to provide a single unified platform to manage teams and players efficiently as well as handle analytical insights for performance optimization.
