TBS’s Conan In Cuba has reached 3.7 million viewers, thanks to multiplatform viewing and encore telecasts on TBS, HLN and truTV. The late night destination special delivered 1.5 million viewers in Live+7 delivery for its March 5 premiere telecast, a 73 percent increase over Conan’s year-to-date average.
There’s closure on the way for fans of NBC‘s Revolution, canceled last year after two seasons. The show’s storylines will wrap up in a four-chapter digital comic book, a project from exec producers Eric Kripke, J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Rockne S. O’Bannon and Jon Favreau, with DC Comics; Revolution writers David Reed and Ryan Parrott penned the chapters. In a letter to fans, Kripke said he wanted to pay them back and give them “something fantastic. And while, unfortunately, we simply can’t make more episodes of the show (alas, there are financial realities we can’t overcome), we can do the next best thing. Which is end the story. On our terms. Exactly the way we would have.”
CBS Interactive announced new limited-run concert web series Legends on Letterman, featuring musical acts that have performed on the Late Show with David Letterman. Kicking off with a performance by Mumford & Sons on Tuesday, May 5 at 8p, the webcast, presented by Microsoft Surface, will be available live on CBS.com and on-demand on CBS.com, the CBS Apps, select CBS Radio stations’ websites, and select CBS Audience network partner sites.
Fashion Police will be back in September – and so will host Giuliana Rancic, despite controversy over comments she made about Zendaya’s Oscars hairstyle, and the departures soon after of fellow hosts Kelly Osbourne and Kathy Griffin. “I will be on the show, Brad Goreski will be on the show,” said Rancic on Access Hollywood Live Wednesday. “Now they just have to fill the other seats.”
The honorees for the Eighth Annual Television Academy Honors, recognizing programs that have used the power of TV to shift cultural acceptance and influence viewers, have been announced. The 2014 recipients are: black-ish “Crime and Punishment,” E:60 Presents Dream On:Stories of Boston’s Strongest, The Normal Heart, Paycheck to Paycheck: The Life & Times of Katrina Gilbert, Transparent and Virunga. The Television Academy celebrate the showrunners and producers of the winning programs during a special presentation hosted by Dana Delany at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills on Wednesday, May 27.
National Geographic Channel announced its upfront slate on Wednesday. Generating buzz is Breakthrough, an anthology showcasing leading scientists and cutting edge innovations. Set to debut this fall, it comes to the network from Imagine Entertainment‘s Ron Howard and Brian Grazer and Asylum Entertainment.Directors include Angela Bassett, Peter Berg, Paul Giamatti, Akiva Goldsman, Ron Howard and Brett Ratner.
Other new Nat Geo series include: 50 States of Survival, about a survival savant, an alternative engineer and a gadget guru competing against each other in challenges across the U.S.; Primal Survival, featuring Hazen Audel completing a series of solo survival missions in the world’s most remote places by using only his tribal training, and The Great Human Race, following adventurers Bill Schindler and Cat Bigney for 35,000 miles as they complete challenges.
The network is also airing three major events. Saints & Strangers goes beyond the familiar historical version of the founding of America, revealing the trials and tribulations of the first American settlers. In a yearlong event, Nat Geo and Nat Geo WILD, in partnership with the National Parks System, present America’s National Parks, while History of the World … For Now takes viewers on an irreverent romp through time, from the Big Bang to The Notorious B.I.G.
On the heels of its most-watched and highest-rated year ever, Nat Geo WILD is marking its fifth anniversary with a returning series, new shows, specials and events that target a very specific viewer. “In this time of intense disruption and competition, having a strong brand identity and understanding of your audience is more important than ever,” said National Geographic Channels CEO Courteney Monroe. “At Nat Geo WILD, we have both! We are a network for anyone who loves animals as much as we do, and our Upfront slate reflects this perfectly.”
Joining returning series, more than half of which star veterinarians (The Incredible Dr. Pol is the net’s number one show) are newcomers Vet School and Animal Storm Squad, about an animal disaster-relief specialist. A new summer series, Biggest & Baddest, will feature explorer Niall McCann, and natural history specials include Wild Yellowstone, Wild Sri Lanka, Wild Atlantic and Wild South Africa.
Upcoming events include the returns of Big Cat Week, with five world premiere specials and Barkfest, as well as Sharkfest, offering insights and in-depth profiles of the likes of hammerheads and the great white (“We’re leaving the scare tactics and mockumentaries to others,” promises the net).
