Primetime news magazine Dateline is heading to national syndication in September. NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution sold the series in 80% of the country to be broadcast on leading station groups across the country, including FOX Television Stations, Sinclair, Meredith, Nexstar, Graham Media, Tribune, COX Media Group, Scripps, Sunbeam and more. Double runs of Dateline will also be offered to stations to air as a two-hour true crime block.
And they’re off… Annapurna TV, HBO and Tomorrow Studios are racing to ready political dramas about the 2016 election. Annapurna and Mark Boal’s project, which is being kept under wraps, is reportedly 8-10 hours long and centers on the election and unlikely winner Donald Trump. HBO is working on a mini-series about Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton from the same team behind Game Change. And Tomorrow Studios has a pilot and second episode script of Trump: It Happened Here, for an ongoing series.
ABC’s Speechless, CNN’s We Will Rise: Michelle Obama’s Mission, National Geographic’s Before The Flood, NBC’s This Is Us and HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and The Night of were announced as honorees for the 10th Annual Television Academy Honors. Recipients will be recognized at a presentation hosted by Dana Delany at the Montage Beverly Hills on Thursday, June 8. The awards recognize programming that explores and confronts significant issues facing society in an impactful way.
The Peabody Awards Board of Jurors have selected Norman Lear to receive an Individual Award and the Independent Television Service to receive an Institutional Award for their contributions to storytelling in television. Lear and ITVS will be celebrated at an event on Saturday, May 20 in New York, which will be taped for a TV special to air on PBS and Fusion on Friday, June 2 at 9p. Rashida Jones, a previous Peabody Award winner for Parks and Recreation, will serve as host.
The Paley Media Council presents PaleyDialogue: Casey Bloys in Conversation with Issa Rae at The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills on Tuesday, April 25. Bloys, who joined HBO in 2004 and was named President of Programming in 2016, has overseen series including multiple Veep, Silicon Valley and Girls, is joined in conversation by Rae, the creator and star of new hit, Insecure. The panel will be live streamed.

MTV is reviving Fear Factor with a new installment to be hosted by Ludacris. The Viacom network ordered 12 hour-long episodes from Endemol Shine North America to debut Tuesday, May 30 at 10p. Look for the revival to feature stunts inspired by urban legends, popular scary movies and viral videos.
CBS Television Studios has bought the rights to Meg Gardiner’s upcoming novel, UNSUB, ahead of an auction, reports Deadline. The novel, the first in a series being published June 27 by Dutton/Penguin Random House, will be developed as a TV series.
Adam Glass inked an overall, two-year deal with Fox 21 Television Studios. Under the pact’s terms, the former Supernatural EP has joined the studio’s new Showtime drama, The Chi, as co-executive producer.
Regina King and John Ridley have joined forces to tell a real American crime story, No Place Safe. King is attached to star in the drama about the Atlanta child murders. The project is in development at FX.
Syfy picked up Universal Cable Productions drama The Magicians for a 13-episode third season. The show’s sophomore season finale airs Wednesday, April 19 at 9p. Season 3 premieres in 2018.
Oxygen Media launches the 20th season of Snapped with Snapped Notorious: Scott Peterson, bowing Sunday, May 7 at 6p. The two-part special features first-hand interviews with Peterson’s ex-girlfriend, Amber Frey, trial jurors and the defense team.
ABC’s Good Morning America chief meteorologist Ginger Zee and her husband, NBC and Extra reporter Ben Aaron, star in DIY Network series Renovation Realities: Ben & Ginger. The four-part series, which bows Saturday, May 6 at 8p, follows the duo as they ditch cramped city life to renovate a suburban fixer upper and turn it into their dream home.
A new crop of culinary contenders face off in return of Food Network Star, bowing Sunday, June 4 at 9p. In addition, Food Network Star: Comeback Kitchen debuts Sunday, May 21 at 8p,
TLC’s Little People Big World returns Tuesday, May 2 at 9p. The season launch of another family series, 7 Little Johnstons, follows at 10p.
Food Porn is back for seconds. The FYI series makes its sophomore season debut on Sunday, May 14 at 10p.
Serialized drama The Mist bows on Spike on Thursday, June 22 at 10p. Based on the book of the same title by Stephen King, series centers around a small town family torn apart by a brutal crime.
TLC captures real moments live in a four-night television event premiering Sunday, April 23 at 10p. This Is Life Live goes inside the lives of families across the country to deliver life altering moments as they unfold in real time. Lisa Joyner and DeVon Franklin will host.
TV One airs Unsung Hollywood: Charlie Murphy on Thursday, April 13 at 8a. The special pays tribute to the late stand up-comic, actor and writer, who was also Eddie Murphy’s brother. In addition, TV One premieres The Lost Souls Cafe, starring Loretta Devine, on Sunday, April 16 at 6p. The film is an adaptation of Donald Welch’s stage play.
PBS presents an encore broadcast of two-part documentary Latin Music USA on Friday, April 28 and Friday, May 5 at 9p (check local listings). The special explores the Latin rhythms that influenced jazz, rock, country, and rhythm and blues, highlighting the enduring contributions made by Latino musicians to the American songbook.
NBCUniversal forged a strategic sales partnership with Kargo to create a unified mobile advertising offering, including mobile advertising solutions for agency partners and advertisers with access to more than 170 million mobile users and 80+ premium publisher properties. “Collaborating with Kargo to create opportunities for advertisers together in a trusted, brand-safe environment will make it easier for mobile marketing campaigns to scale,” said Linda Yaccarino, chairman, advertising sales and client partnerships, NBCUniversal.
Feature production in Los Angeles took a major hit in early 2017, falling to levels not seen since 2012, according to a report by FilmLA. Despite being nearly three years into California’s revamped and expanded $330 million Film and Television tax credit program, on-location film production was down a 36.3% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same time period in 2016.
The virtual reality market may be young, but new research shows 44 million consumers are already engaged with VR or are planning to buy a device soon, according to the VR/AR Insights Consortium, a consumer-focused research initiative formed by Magid (Frank N. Magid Associates). The consortium, currently comprised of A+E Networks, Best Buy, MasterCard, Turner, Warner Bros and The VR Society, convenes quarterly to study results of original consumer research designed by the group and delve into marketplace trends. Initial research shows 26% of the consumer audience ages 18 to 64 (44 million people) already fall into one or more of the following categories: has a VR device in the household (7 million consumers), use a VR device weekly (11 million) or is likely to purchase a VR device in the next year (37 million).
Donald Sutherland will play billionaire oil man J. Paul Getty in the first installment of FX anthology series Trust. Production begins in June in London for a January 2018 premiere.
Lisa Kudrow was tapped for a key guest spot on Netflix’s Grace and Frankie. She’ll play Sheree, the manicurist to Jane Fonda’s Grace.
Calista Flockhart is returning for the two-episode second season finale of Supergirl, airing Monday, May 15 and Monday, May 22 on The CW.
William Hurt and Bob Balaban joined the cast of upcoming Audience Network series Condor. Hurt plays a decorated CIA field operative who is rusty and a little soft after 20 years behind a desk. Balaban portrays a brilliant and exacting man who has risen to the top tier of CIA management in his 30-year career there.
Hasbro Studios and Discovery Family released a My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic video inspired by The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. It can be accessed here. The seventh season of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic premieres Saturday, April 15 at 11:30a on Discovery Family.
Netflix officially announced the renewal of Grace and Frankie. The show’s fourth season bows in 2018.
Hulu renewed The Path for a 13-episode third season. The show’s second season finale aired Wednesday. Jessica Goldberg will serve as Showrunner/Executive Producer for the third run.
In other Hulu news, the streamer inked a deal with Cineflix Media for Pure. Crime drama tells the story of a Mennonite pastor trying to protect his family and preserve his faith, while battling drug trafficking in his community.
Complex Networks and Verizon Wireless‘ streaming platform go90 debuted original series Start Talkin’ on Wednesday. Hosted by comedian Scott Rogowsky, it turns the traditional interview on its head when everyday people unexpectedly become late-night show guests.
STV’s new channel STV2 launches Monday, April 24 with Ireland’s longest running soap, Fair City, at the heart of its schedule. STV2 will also air a range of movies and UK and foreign language drama and crime documentaries.
UK’s Arrow Media commissioned Hear No Evil for Investigation Discovery. Each episode features in-the-moment audio recordings captured by victims’ families, perpetrators’ friends, investigators and even the killers themselves.

The two premiere airings of Bounce drama Saints & Sinners on Sunday, April 9 combined to reach 1.3 million unduplicated viewers. The show’s East Coast debut delivered 490,000 Households to become the highest-rated Bounce original series telecast ever and the most-watched episode in the show’s history. The telecast was also the best of the second season-to-date in delivering P18-49 (259,000), P25-54 (320,000) and P2+ (605,000).
The finale of Su Nombre Era Dolores reached over 4.5 million viewers, making Univision the number 3 broadcast network among young A18-34 during the 9p to 11p time period and the number 4 broadcast network among Total Viewers 2+ and A18-49.
