On Friday, Fox, Turner and Viacom hosted an event to fill in some of the blanks about their previously announced consortium. With support from Nielsen and comScore, Accenture will run OpenAP, aimed at allowing advertisers to target messages to specific viewers beyond the traditional demos, with transparency and consistency. The move is “a baby step in the right direction,” said Fox Networks Group’s president of advanced advertising products Joe Marchese. “Dora can finally play with Bart with adult supervision from Anderson Cooper.” President of Turner ad sales Donna Speciale told the group of advertisers, “This is a historical day for all of us. You’ve been asking us to come together…We heard you.”
In a statement, Nielsen expressed support for the venture, noting its audience segments built on household, person level and buyergraphic ratings data are the most widely used for National audience-based buying across linear television today.“We are confident that they will play the same role in OpenAP,” said the measurement company.“We look forward to working with the participating networks and advertisers on the broader success of this initiative.”
At its Upfront last week, Azteca America announced a new show in the works, El Muro (The Wall), about a fictional U.S. president who decides to build a wall to separate his country from its neighbor. Net president-CEO Manuel Abud tells Cynopsis the timeliness of the topic is no accident. “As a Mexican-American, I’ve always been touched by the drama of border towns,” says Abud. “El Muro (The Wall) provides a framework that came out of the reality of what is happening today in our country. But it’s a story I’ve always wanted to tell. Today’s political climate provides great setup for developing a U.S. drama that is compelling, emotional and touches a real nerve with our audience.”
Conservative commentator Tomi Lahren, whose show was booted from The Blaze after she made an appearance on The View and said she was pro-choice, sued the right-wing network for terminating her contract and conducting a “public smear campaign.” Tweeted Lahren, “Lay down and play dead really isn’t my style.” Responded The Blaze in a statement, “It is puzzling that an employee who remains under contract (and is still being paid) has sued us for being fired.”
What do you think of Tomi Lauren’s treatment by The Blaze? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.
Syndicated magazine show Hollywood Today Live! was canceled by Nexstar Media Group after 2 seasons, and will end its run April 28. The show aired in partnership with Fox Television Stations.

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM NCM

Whether you’re launching in April or looking for reach in October, advertising with NCM hits your KPIs every month.
Year-round, advertising on America’s Movie Network delivers the best content, the most Millennial GRPs, and data to back it all up.

The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills has added One Day at a Timeto its 2017 PaleyLive LA Spring Season, for a session on Thursday, May 4, at 7p.The Netflix reboot joins CW’s Riverdale (April 27), and ABC’s Speechless (May 9) and Dirty Dancing (May 18).
AMC Networks held its NYC Upfront event at Skylight Clarkson North on April 6, its first ever to feature all of its networks: AMC, BBC America, IFC, SundanceTV and WE tv. The stars of those nets were put to work, making the rounds of tables of ad buyers. There were clips aplenty, with an overriding message of “content with intent.” (“Now, enjoy your tomato soup,” joked Charlie Collier, president & GM of AMC and SundanceTV, after a particularly bloody tape.) Execs pointed to shows like The Walking Dead and Portlandia that offer advertisers engaged audiences.
And a large audience, noted Collier. The Walking Dead wrapped season 7 as the #1 show on television among A18-49 for the fifth consecutive year, the only drama in television history to hold the #1 title for five consecutive years, and extended its lead over the #2 program, CBS’s Big Bang Theory, by 61% in the demo. Aftershow Talking Dead remains the #1 talk show on television, averaging 4.9 million viewers per week for the just-completed season. Upcoming series on AMC include The Son, starring Pierce Brosnan, anthology series The Terror and Lodge 49.
Collier also shared the news that SundanceTV will start airing the first season of Amazon’s Transparent this summer. In addition to season 2 of Hap and Leonard comes the second season of SundanceTV’s Top of the Lake, with Nicole Kidman joining the returning Elisabeth Moss. New drama Liar stars Downton Abbey’s Joan Froggatt.
At IFC, new comedy Brockmire is winning raves and has already been picked up for season 2, genre-bending Stan Against Evil returns in the fall and new original Living With Yourself debuts in 2018. Following AMCN’s recent acquisition of a 20% stake in Funny or Die, the digital comedy hub will be used to promote a full night of programming in the fall.
WE tv is on solid footing as a home for reality TV. The From Not to Hot reveal delivered 2.4 million viewers, its highest-rated show to date, and Friday night’s #1 cable show among all key demos. The net also launched Doctor Miami, about a Snapchatting surgeon, renewed Million Dollar Matchmaker for season 2 and is expanding franchises with Growing Up Hip Hop Atlanta and Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars Family Edition.
Stunning footage from Planet Earth II illustrated why that show has helped BBC America become the top ratings gainer year over year among entertainment networks in1Q17. Spinoff Top Gear America arrives later in 2017, and Orphan Black starts its final run on June 10.
The highlight of FX’s seventh annual upfront bowling party, aside from the strikes, was the season 3 premiere of Fargo, debuting Wednesday, April 19. The drama “is a show that typifies the power of ad-supported cable television to compete, and often surpass, our ad-free competitors,” said FX CEO John Landgraf. “Advertising is fundamental to our business.”
Ricky Martin is joining FX’s Versace: American Crime Story, the third installment of the Ryan Murphy franchise. The singer guested on Murphy’s Glee.
NBC has the announcing team set for season 2 of Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge. Olympic speed skater/Dancing with the Stars champ Apolo Ohno and ESPN’s Kelvin Washington will deliver play-by-play, while MJ Acosta returns as a sideline reporter with new addition, MLB all-star Nick Swisher, starting Monday, June 12 at 10p.
Big Bad BBQ Brawl returns to Cooking Channel on Tuesday, May 2 at 10p, with Brooklyn pitmaster Shannon Ambrosio hitting the road to see how his Southern bbq concoctions measure up against experts across the country.
FremantleMedia International struck a deal with the Altice Group for Jamie’s Quick & Easy Food, starring celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. In the cooking show, each recipe calls for only 5 ingredients.
One step closer: The European Commission cleared 21st Century Fox’s acquisition of Sky, reasoning the deal does not raise anti-trust red flags. “They compete with each other only to a limited extent,” said the commission on Friday.
