Good morning. It’s Wednesday April 8, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

The Duke/Wisconsin National Championship was a high-scoring affair, at least from an audience perspective. The matchup averaged 28.3 million total viewers, for a markup of 33% from last year to rank as the most-viewed NCAA title game in 18 years. The contest averaged a fast national household rating/share of 16.0/26, up 28% from last year’s score on CBS. Overall, the entire tournament across TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV became the most-watched NCAA Tournament in 22 years, according to Nielsen Fast National ratings, pulling 11.3 million average total viewers, up 8% from last year, and drawing a HH rating/share of 7.0/15, up 8% from last year.

On the digital front, NCAA March Madness Live scored all-time records including 80.7 million live video streams as well as 17.8 million hours of live video consumption during this year’s tournament.  This year’s live video streams are up 17%over last year, with hours of live video consumption up 19% this year.

ON THE AIR

USA is getting the SmackDown, with WWE announcing that the weekly series will shift over to USA Network in the first quarter of 2016. USA now claims all of WWE’s staple properties, running Monday Night Raw live 52 weeks a year as well as the reality competition series WWE Tough Enough, which returns this summer. "WWE consistently delivers one of the largest and most socially engaged live audiences in entertainment and we’re excited to expand our long-standing relationship and be the true cable home for the WWE fan,” said USA Network President Chris McCumber.
 
NBC Sports Group will begin its run with Spartan Race this year on July 21 at 11p on NBCSN with the Montana Beast. The company’s 2015 Reebok Spartan Race television and digital media schedule will then go through Dec. with the 2015 Reebok Spartan Race World Championship on Dec. 20 at 3p on NBC. NBCSN will telecast four additional Reebok Spartan Races during the 2015 season.

Golf Channel will see the Big Three  Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player  join the network today, appearing together on Golf Central’s Live From the Masters at 10:30a. Tom Watson will make a guest appearance following the trio.

Fuse is bringing the Legends Football League into the huddle on April 18 at 9p, lining up a schedule via an exclusive United States broadcast rights agreement. The channel will carry the entire LFL USA 2015 season in primetime including (18) eighteen regular season games, (2) conference Playoff games as well as the Legends Cup championship game.  “This is a key acquisition for Fuse as we continue to roll out programming that extends beyond music and resonates with our core audience of New Young Americans as well as the established LFL fan base,” said Bill Hilary, President Fuse Media, Inc. “LFL is primed tobecome the next major sports and entertainment franchise ontelevision and we are excited to build on this momentum and bring these athletes, games and compelling stories to the network.”

World of X Games is launching its four-part series Being on Saturday at 3p on ABC. The program will profile some of the brand’s biggest stars, with volume one spotlighting Makua Rothman, Marie-France Roy, Jeremy McGrath and Danny Way.

The NBA confirmed its ticket to Cuba, announcing that the league will join the International Basketball Federation to host their first joint basketball development camp in Havana from April 23-26. Two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash, NBA Global Ambassador Dikembe Mutombo, and WNBA Legend Ticha Penicheiro will lead the four-day camp with the Cuban Men’s and Women’s National Teams. In addition, for the first time, the NBA and FIBA will invite two players and one coach from Cuba to participate in the upcoming Basketball without Borders camp and, through NBA Cares, will refurbish three basketball courts and host youth basketball clinics at two Havana locations.

Toshiba America Business Solutions, Inc. and Coca-Cola struck deals to be a part of the upcoming Las Vegas Arena. The formal, multi-year agreements make the brands “Founding Partners” of the venue, which is slated to open in spring 2016 and owned by AEG and MGM Resorts International. Toshiba’s agreement gives them a naming rights partnership for the two-acre outdoor public plaza being created outside of the arena’s main (north) entrance, now known as Toshiba Plaza, offering a variety of video screens and other interactive content and display areas which will be programmed before, during and after Arena events. Toshiba also becomes the arena’s exclusive supplier for digital signage and displays as well as multifunction printers and copiers. Coca-Cola’s agreement calls for the company to be the exclusive supplier of all sparkling and still beverages in the arena, Toshiba Plaza and adjacent Park being developed by MGM Resorts. Coca-Cola will also work with the arena developers to create a branded Fan Activation Zone for a minimum of four events annually.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Back to the NCAA Championship Game, the Duke/Wisconsin battle became the most-talked-about NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Game on Facebook ever, according to the company. Overall, the game saw more than 4 million people generating 9 million posts, comments and likes on Facebook about the game, worldwide. In addition, this year’s NCAA tournament drove more conversation than Facebook has ever measured for the event, with more than 24 million people generating 76 million posts, comments and likes globally on Facebook related to March Madness. The biggest moment overall was the final hour of the Championship Game, which saw 1.3 million unique People Per Hour posting, commenting, and liking related content.

For the first time ever, NBC Sports Digital will utilize Meerkat to live stream weigh-ins for this weekend’s PBC on NBC card. On Friday, April 10 the @NBCSports Twitter handle will feature the boxers as they weigh-in before their primetime NBC debuts on Saturday, April 11, at 8:30p.

MLBAM saw a record-setting 60 million live and on-demand video streams to baseball fans on Opening Day, with content consumed across MLB.com, MLB.TV, MLB.com At Bat and MLB.com-controlled social media channels.. That new mark also represents a 60 percent increase from last year’s Opening Day record. In addition, fans accessed the At Bat mobile app 9.1 million times yesterday, eclipsing the previous single day record by nearly 40 percent.

The NHL opened the doors to the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs Bracket Challenge powered by Samsung at NHL.com/Bracket. The offering allows fans to predict each and every series through the Stanley Cup Final in a competition for prizes. New this year, Match-up Analysis with Insights from SAP will help fans determine who has the edge in each series. Meanwhile, the “Famous Hockey Fans” league will feature brackets submitted by notable fans that include Michael J. Fox, Jon Hamm and Taylor Kitsch and actress Alyssa Milano.
