A new choice: The People’s Choice Awards are moving to E! The network will be the exclusive home of the award show that celebrates pop culture and is voted on entirely by fans. E! will air the awards starting in 2018, and take over all associated digital, social and voting platforms. The 2018 event, the 44th installment of the awards, will be produced by Wilshire Studios, the team behind E!’s signature “Live from The Red Carpet.” People’s Choice Awards was originally created in 1975 by Robert Stivers and previously was owned by Procter & Gamble and produced by Mark Burnett for CBS.
More changes are in the air for the newly monikered MTV Movie & TV Awards. The awards will comingle film, television and streaming nominees together in some categories, and is eliminating gender divisions for acting categories – presenting Best Actor statuettes to both male and female performers. MTV previously announced it was adding television categories to the formerly movies-only event. MTV also is introducing what the network describes as two “new and timely” categories: Best American story, awarded to the show or film that showcases America at its best (“open and diverse”) and Best fight against the system, for characters who “best exemplify fighting against a system that tries to keep them down.” The MTV Movie & TV Awards will air live Sunday, May 7 at 8p on MTV.
