04/07/17: NBC Sports presses Stanley Cup attack; FIFA’s TV terms; CONCACAF harmonizes NA trio

Good morning. It’s Friday April 7, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

NBC Sports is hitting the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs bolstered with coverage that will avoid local blackouts (except Boston and Pittburgh), as programming on NBC, NBCSN, CNBC, USA Network (along with NHL Network) will run side-by-side with regional sports carriage as well as be made available for streaming on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app. Overall, the company will carry as many as 105 playoff games, and possibly more than 260 hours of programming through June starting April 12. NBCSN will serve as the primary home of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, offering coverage of one or two games virtually every night of the first round while NBC will showcase six exclusive first-round broadcasts during the weekends of April 15-16 and April 22-23. During the second round, all games will air exclusively on NBC, NBCSN, USA Network, or CNBC, with NBC lining up a second-round Stanley Cup Playoff game immediately following live coverage of the Kentucky Derby on May 6.

On social channels, activation will include: Last Night on The Stanley Cup Playoffs, where NBC Sports treats each night of the postseason “like your favorite television dramatic series, churning out relevant, daily content highlighting the most memorable moments from each night’s games”; The Social Sin Bin; and the Stanley Cup Wishing Well Facebook Live.

ON THE AIR

CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani told The Guardian that the organization will look to serve up a three-for-one deal in a bid for the 2026 World Cup. He stated that the United States, Mexico and Canada are now "aiming" to bid together for the event. "Canada, the U.S. and Mexico are aiming for a joint bid," he said. "The idea has been around for a while, discussions are continuing and it is a very exciting proposition if it comes to fruition.

NBC Sports Group locked in a media rights deal with the IAAF Diamond League that will bring exclusive television and digital streaming rights to company for annual track and field events through 2019. The deal kicks in May 5, with the first event of the season in Doha, Qatar, Overall, NBC Sports Group will present 58 hours of Diamond League coverage this season, including 10 hours on NBC.

Meanwhile, the United Soccer League inked media expansion deals, including a broader play with ESPN for the 2017 USL season that will see more USL games  as well as the USL Cup in November aired on ESPNU. The USL Game of the Week on ESPN3 will also return, with top games being featured on the streaming network throughout the 30-week regular season. In addition, the USL announced a new agreement with SiriusXM that will bring the league to a national radio audience throughout the 2017 USL season starting Tuesday as SiriusXM FC, carries a live USL Game of the Week in addition to a weekly one-hour show that will debut on Monday.

beIN Sports reports a hot March as its channels combined to score over 3 million viewers and 1.8 million among Adults 18-49 for its coverage of the World Cup Qualifiers for South America. Panama/USA on March 28th ranked as the most-viewed telecast on beIN Sports year-to-date and the most-watched qualifying match of all time on the network outpacing the beIN SPORTS total day average by triple digits.

Conference USA released its television schedules for college football games running on ESPN and CBS Sports Network this season. The ESPN schedule kicks off on Aug. 26 with Rice/Stanford from Sydney. The CBS Sports Network lineup then begins on Sept. 2 with Kentucky/Southern Miss The 2017 C-USA Championship game on Dec. 2 is slate to run on either ESPN or ESPN 2.

Speaking of college sports, ESPN announced that 10 prospects  led by Washington’s Kelsey Plum and South Carolina’s Alaina Coates – will attend the WNBA Draft 2017 presented by State Farm on April 13 with ESPN2 offering coverage starting at 7p with the first round. ESPNU will then air the second and third rounds starting at 8p. 

NBA TV ends the NBA regular season with eight live game telecasts in four days, including a quadruple header on Saturday, as well as this year’s final Fan Night doubleheader on April 11. The final weekend of regular season action will tip off with the Hawks/Cavaliers tonight at 7:30p. 

SNY reports the network’s most-watched broadcast since its final farewell to Shea Stadium in 2008, with viewership in the New York DMA delivering 470,329 Total Viewers. The extra-inning broadcast also delivered an eight-year high with a 4.70 Household Rating.

SEGA is teaming with WWE to publish a new free-to-play idle mobile game called WWE Tap Mania. The game is being developed by The Tap Lab and is projected for launch later this year. “At SEGA, we like to find new ways to bring brands and experiences to a wide mobile gaming audience,” said Naoki Kameda, COO of SEGA’s mobile division in the West. “This partnership with WWE presents a fresh opportunity for collaboration. MLB announced that Old Dominion Freight Line will now be the “Official Freight Carrier for Major League Baseball.” The company will introduce a fleet of nearly 30,000 trailers with MLB branding and baseball imagery as part of the partnership as well as run advertising and promotions across MLB Network, MLB Advanced Media’s digital properties including MLB.com, and across MLB’s official accounts on a variety of social media platforms.
 
MLB and USA Baseball announced the launch of the inaugural ‘Trailblazer Series,’ described as a first-of-its-kind girls baseball tournament hosted in conjunction with Jackie Robinson Day. The event will see approximately 100 girls, ages 16 and under, participate in the three-day tournament held in the greater Los Angeles-area from April 13-15. In recognition of the legacy of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, the teams will be named for notable alumnae from the all-women’s league that lasted from 1943 through 1954. 

DIGITAL & STREAMING

The post-WrestleMania afterglow continues for WWE, which announced new records for the annual event. According to the company, WrestleMania 33 ranked as the most social event in WWE history, according to Nielsen Social, with 5.19 million interactions on Facebook and Twitter during the broadcast alone. There were also 2.8 million tweets about WrestleMania throughout the day. Overall, the card  accounted for nearly 30% of all social TV interactions on Sunday. WrestleMania reached a record 1.95 million global households on WWE Network alone, making it the most-watched WrestleMania in history, with pay-per-view data still forthcoming.
 
As the Arena Football League launches its 2017 season, the league will use Sportsrocket to live stream its games and provide fans real time highlights. Action kicks off today and at least 17 games will be live streamed on ArenaFootball.com via Sportsrocket Turbine. In addition, Turbine will make games, live look-ins and real time highlights available to fans.

Olympic Channel is launching is first original series dedicated to cycling with Africa Cycling Revolution. The six-episode will “journey across sub-Saharan Africa to uncover a new generation of cyclists and shows how the sport is reaching new audiences and was filmed on location by a local production company.

ESPORTS

IGN Entertainment is hitting E3 this June with a new partnership with Twitter that will see the platform serve as their official livestream broadcast partner for the event, which runs June 10-15. Fans will receive over 30 hours of live coverage and IGN’s livestream will be available worldwide to Twitter’s logged-in and logged-out audience on Twitter and connected devices, showcasing all major press briefings from Sony, Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft and more, including live pre- and post show commentary from IGN hosts and special guests.

Turner and IMG’s first-ever ELeague Street Fighter V Invitational launches its regular season “Group A” coverage tonight on TBS with a special live Friday night showcase at 10p. Group A will feature six Street Fighter V contenders: Lee “Infiltration” Seon-woo, Victor “Punk” Woodley, Yusuke Momochi, Bryant “SMUG” Huggin, Thomas “Brolynho” Proença, and Julio Fuentes.

Psyonix detailed plans for the Rocket League Championship Series Season 3 World Championship, locking The Wiltern Theater in LA for the vent from June 2-4. This will mark the first time the RLCS World Championship will be held over three days and the first time that teams from the Oceanic region will be competing in the tournament, with a record prize pool of $300,000. Tickets go on sale the week of April 17.
