Good morning. It’s Thursday April 6, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Thursday Night Football once again has a new home, as the NFL locked in a deal with Amazon that will move the franchise from Twitter to Amazon Prime where it will deliver games to a global audience across devices during the 2017 NFL Season. With a reported value topping $50 million, the platform now receives rights to stream the 10 game package.
 
“We are continually looking for ways to deliver our games to fans wherever they watch, whether on television or on digital platforms and we are thrilled to bring Thursday Night Football to Amazon”, said Brian Rolapp, Chief Media and Business Officer for the NFL.  “As has been the case with all our streaming initiatives, we look forward to continuing to innovate with our partners as we learn the best ways to serve our fans both this season and into the future.”

ON THE AIR

The Mountain West Conference released its football national television package for the 2017 season with 44 national games set to run on CBS Sports Network and ESPN networks with play beginning Aug. 26 with a duo of Oregon State/Colorado State and South Florida/San Jose State set to CBS Sports Network. Meanwhile, ESPN’s selections for the first three weeks of the season are anticipated by mid-June. Boise State will see the most games on an ESPN Network, with six currently planned.

Meanwhile, ESPN.com writes that the American Athletic Conference board of directors will vote on Friday to admit Wichita State into the league beginning next season. The school needs 75% of votes for admission.

DirecTV lined up its 4K Ultra HD coverage plans for The Masters this week. Channel lineups will include two channels of coverage in the format produced by CBS with channel 105 showcasing Amen Corner while channel 106 will spotlight holes 15 and 16. Coverage will include all four rounds of the tournament. In addition, the company will also offer an HD Mosaic, aka The Masters Experience, displaying four screens of live coverage on channel 701, with channels 702-705 offering ESPN and CBS network coverage, along with two featured groups, Amen Corner and Holes 15 and 16.

NBC Sports Group is once again crossing the pond, taking its entire Premier League announce team on-location in the UK from April 15-17 for coverage from three different grounds, featuring on-site studios for pre-match, halftime and post-game shows as well as pitch-side locations. Rebecca Lowe will host the Premier League Live pre- and post-match show on-site at each match, joined by a revolving combination of analysts.

Meanwhile, NASCAR on NBC host Krista Voda makes her NBC Sports Group horse racing debut on Saturday on NBCSN for coverage of the Wood Memorial, Blue Grass Stakes, and Santa Anita Derby. She will be joined at by Jerry Bailey, Randy Moss, Eddie Olczyk; and reporters Donna Brothers and Laffit Pincay, III. NBC Sports race caller Larry Collmus will call the Wood Memorial from Aqueduct.

ELEVEN Sports announced that it will showcase live coverage of select events from the 2017 Ciclismo Cup. The channel will showcase 90 minutes of live coverage per day across six races of the 2017 Ciclismo Cup beginning with the Tour of the Alps starting April 17. The races will be produced by PMG Sport, distributed with Oneplayer and organized by the Italian League of the Professional Cycling.

Outdoor Sportsman Group Networks report ratings growth during the first quarter of 2017, particularly in key demographics categories. Outdoor Channel scored rises of 103% among Adults 18-34 and 67% among Men 18-34 during Total Day versus Q1 in 2016. Outdoor Channel also delivered its highest Q1 ratings in seven years in the two categories. Meanwhile, Sportsman Channel boosted its coverage ratings during Total Day with young adults as M18-34 (up 12%) and A18-34 (15%) over the same period a year ago.

Tennis Channel lined up live coverage of the U.S. Davis Cup team’s quarterfinal competition against Australia from Brisbane this weekend, starting today at 10p. Meanwhile, Tennis Channel Plus will show the three other Davis Cup quarterfinals starting Friday.

IFC announced that its new comedy Brockmire has been picked up for a second season that will run in 2018 with an additional eight new 30-minute episodes. The series made its debut last night following a digital premier that notched over 2.3 million views. “We love everything about Brockmire – from the writing, to the cast, to all the sports puns we get to use,” said Jennifer Caserta, president of IFC. “The show has already gotten an amazing reception from fans and critics alike, and we are thrilled to be ‘keeping it Brockmire’ with our partners at Funny or Die and Hank Azaria for another season on IFC.”
 
Tomorrow see ESPN2 offer the College Basketball Awards Presented by Wendy’s at 8p from The Novo by Microsoft in downtown Los Angeles. The program debuts a new, 90-minute format and will see Molly McGrath join the ESPN College GameDay by State Farm team of Rece Davis, Jay Bilas, Seth Greenberg and Jay Williams as they interview winners, present awards and relive the season’s best moments.

SNY’s Monday afternoon broadcast of Mets/Braves scored its highest total audience in the New York DMA for an Opening Day telecast since 2008 and ranked as the second most-watched Opening Day game ever on SNY. The afternoon game generated a 4.36 Household Rating and was seen by 395,117 Total Viewers on SNY.

Esurance laid out its activation plans for the new MLB season, debuting a new television commercial and social media campaign featuring Buster Posey as he presents motivational pep talks in the social video series. Meanwhile, Esurance will continue as the title sponsor of the all-digital Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot and the Esurance MLB Awards. The company will announce specific activations associated with the programs later in the season. The new Esurance MLB commercial will begin airing April 10 on sports cable networks and the “Pep Talks with Buster” series will be released on Esurance social media channels starting in May and throughout the 2017 season.
 
Speaking of spots, AT&T is releasing a new commercial this week for The Masters showcasing Jordan Spieth in an homage to veterans. The commercial pairs Spieth with Saul Martinez, a veteran who lost both of his legs in combat. The brand is also serving up a behind-the-scenes video featuring Saul “lightheartedly” challenging Jordan’s toughness.

UFC locked in a new partnership extension with the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation. Chief Operating Officer Ike Lawrence Epstein stated: "In the five years since IMMAF launched in 2012, it has quickly expanded its footprint to more than 65 countries worldwide, consistently promoting higher safety and regulatory standards and greater recognition of the sport and its many incredible athletes. In addition, IMMAF’s annual African, Asian, European and World championships routinely attract the world’s top amateur mixed martial arts athletes, providing a high-level platform for top tier international talent to gain exposure and compete. Uber is diving deep with AEG, locking in a deal that makes Uber the official rideshare and transportation partner for 27 AEG venues and assets around the world. The partnership, brokered by AEG Global Partnerships, includes marquee venues and assets around the globe including: The O2 (London); The SSE Arena, Wembley (London, England); STAPLES Center and L.A. LIVE (Los Angeles, Calif.), StubHub Center (Carson, Calif.); and more. The new relationship will serve to “enhance the overall fan experience by bringing a new level of convenience to AEG venues and premiere events” with Uber riders now getting easier access to AEG’s numerous events, facilities and teams around the world with the newly designated pick-up and drop-off "Uber Zones" at participating locations.

Sportsman Channel celebrates year ten of its Hunt.Fish.Feed. program, which has seen the network serve more than 30,000 meals and donate 12,000 pounds of game meat and fish to shelters in cities across the country. Its 2017 program will open on April 11 in San Antonio with 10 other stops currently planned.

Competitor Group, operators of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, announced an agreement with United Airlines to create the first Asian event under the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series banner that will take place in Chengdu, China on Oct. 29. The marathon will start and finish in northwest Chengdu’s Dujiangyan City and expects to attract more than 15,000 runners.
 

DIGITAL & STREAMING

The NFL announced plans to work with Intel Corporation to deploy Intel freeD technology in select NFL stadiums across the league in a move to create “dynamic and immersive experiences for football fans, enabling views of the greatest plays from every angle.” The tech was showcased in the Super Bowl LI game broadcast, offering the Intel 360 replay technology in action here and "Be the Player" feature. "The Intel Sports Group is committed to transforming how sports leagues and rights holders can deliver immersive experiences that enhance fan engagement," said James Carwana, general manager, Intel Sports Group. "By integrating Intel technology into select NFL stadiums, we’re enabling unparalleled views of the action to some of the most passionate fans in the world. With Intel’s freeD technology, we’ll offer fans a more immersive viewing experience, draw in new content engagement and push the boundaries of sports innovation."

Banner Promotions will live-stream the WBO Lightweight world championship bout between Terry Flanagan/Petr Petrov live exclusively on Twitter in the US on Saturday. The live stream of Saturday’s Championship fight will be available for free to logged-in and logged-out users exclusively on Twitter and connected devices in the United States. 

MSG Networks and Verizon Fios are bringing MSG GO, to Verizon Fios subscribers who receive MSG Networks as part of their pay television subscription. “We are pleased to expand our partnership with Verizon to provide Fios subscribers with access to live games of their favorite MSG Networks teams and our other award-winning content wherever they are,” said Adam Levine, executive vice president, business affairs and distribution, MSG Networks. “With NHL games now part of MSG GO, Fios subscribers receiving our networks will be able to enjoy an exciting end of the regular season, as well as our compelling post-season coverage.”

Ahead of The Masters, DraftKings launched Weekend Golf, allowing players of the company’s current Fantasy Golf product to remain in contention via a new format that gives players an easier way to play. DraftKings’ existing Golf product spans rounds 1-4 of a tournament while Weekend Golf is a shortened contest containing only rounds 3 and 4 of a given tournament. Weekend Golf will be offered for PGA and Euro Tour and tees off this weekend with The Masters.
