Urban Radio Networks’ April Ryan, who’s made headlines for clashing with the Donald Trump administration, has been named a CNN political analyst. Last week, White House press secretary Sean Spicer drew criticism for ordering Ryan to “stop shaking your head” as he chastised her for pressing him about the “Russia issue.” Ryan made the announcement via Twitter.

The FCC is reversing the President Obama-era “overbuild” requirement of the Charter Communications/Time Warner Cable merger that called for Charter to extend broadband service to 1 million households already served by another provider. Under the revised order, Charter must still add 2 million potential subscribers, but in locations without existing service. The requirement was intended  to “bring innovation and new choices for consumers,” said former FCC chairman Tom Wheeler last year. Yesterday, Wheeler tweeted, “Nobody likes competition…except consumers!”

New daily syndicated series DailyMail TV will launch across the U.S. in Fall 2017, with clearances from Sinclair Broadcast Group, Tribune Broadcasting and Gray Television. Initial coverage of the show, from Stage 29 Productions and Daily Mail On-Air, has reached 105 markets and 66% of the U.S. Exec producers include Carla Pennington (Dr. Phil), Jay McGraw (The Doctors), DailyMail publisher Martin Clarke and Dr. Phil’s Phil McGraw.

Live viewing in 4Q16 dipped to 4 hours and 23 minutes per day among adults 18+, versus 4:27 the year prior and 4:31 in 4Q14, according to Nielsen’s Q4 Total Audience Report. On the other hand, viewing rose one minute, to 33 minutes/day, for time-shifted shows. Smartphone media usage had the biggest gain: 2:32, versus 1:15 a year ago.

Cable news rode the 2016 election to big gains, according to Nielsen. Adults 18+ watched 44% more cable TV networks in 2016 than in 2015, with viewers averaging 6 ½ hours a week on cable news nets, an hour and a half more than in 2015. News consumption from smartphones rose by 50%.

NBC Sports Network is rolling the dice with Poker Central. The deal brings NBCSN exclusive TV rights from the Super High Roller Bowl as well as linear and digital rights to other poker events, Monday primetime poker event coverage starting in the fall, and streaming coverage of Poker Central content.

Smithsonian Channel commissioned America in Color, colorizing a century of black-and-white footage, from Arrow Media. The five-hour series, spanning the 1920s-1960s, transforms films and photos into 4K resolution.

Bunim/Murray Productions, soccer legend Pele and Pele’s manager, Paul “PK” Kemsley, are partnering for a scripted limited series based on the period in Pele’s life when he was playing in New York. Pele and Kemsley will exec produce with B/M’s Gil Goldschein and BMP’s Jeff Jenkins.

Production on season 4 of TV Land’s Younger began yesterday in NYC. Launch date: Wednesday, June 28 at 10p.

Boasting rising year-over-year ratings in the February sweep, syndicated Lauren Lake’s Paternity Court starts production of season 5 today in Atlanta.


Comedy Central weekly late nighter The President Show launches Thursday, April 27 at 11:30p, after The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Donald Trump impersonator Anthony Atamanuik stars as POTUS, avoiding “the crooked media by hosting a late-night show direct from the Oval Office.”

Worlds collide on Invite Only Cabo, following celebrity hair stylist Larry Sims and a group of friends who embark on a vacation with a lot of emotional baggage to unpack. Bravo docu-series bows Sunday, May 14 at 9p.

Claws, described by TNT as a “midnight-dark, wickedly funny meditation on female badness,” premiered Sunday, June 11 at 9p. Setting is a Central Florida nail salon.

USA picked up Falling Water for season 2, with Remi Aubuchon (Falling Skies) joining as showrunner. Dramatic thriller returns later this year.

HBO training camp docu-series Hard Knocks returns August 8, with an NFL team TBD. HBO Sports, NFL Media and NFL Films agreed to a 4-year extension for the show, which last year followed the L.A. Rams.

AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead is back for season 3 on Sunday, June 4 at 9p. The first half of the season will consist of 8 episodes airing over 6 weeks, bookended by back-to-backers. Zombie drama will also air on AMC Global in over 125 countries.

Four-night special event Adventure Time: Elements premieres Monday, April 24 at 7:30p on Cartoon Network. The mini-series is the third in the Adventure Time Franchise.

The Appalachian Investigators of Mysterious Sightings don’t just have the likes of Bigfoot to worry about when Destination America’s Mountain Monsters returns Saturday, April 8 at 10p. This time around, the team also has to contend with a resurfaced masked rival team with dangerous ulterior movies.

Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry returns Wednesday, May 17 at 8p. Among the guests on the E! series from 44 Blue Productions will be Tanya Thicke, who watches her husband Alan Thicke’s never-before-seen reading for the first time since his passing in December.

Season 4 of ID’s Fear Thy Neighbor debuts Thursday, April 6 at 9p, telling the story of a widow whose neighbor’s unwanted attention leads to bloodshed.


Arts net Ovation TV acquired U.S. premiere rights to historical drama series The Halcyon, set in a London hotel in 1940,and three seasons of WWII espionage drama X Company in a deal with Sony Pictures Television.

Auto restoration is the focus of Discovery special Car Saviors, premiering Monday, April 17 at 10p.

With the number of fish dropping significantly, Smithsonian Channel shares stark new findings about the marine ecosystem in An Ocean Mystery: The Missing Catch on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22 at 8p. Ted Danson narrates the film, which follows an international team of scientists investigating overfishing and how close we are to a global crash in fish populations.

The Peabody Awards is partnering with PBS and Fusion for a TV broadcast of the 76th Annual Peabody Awards Ceremony, hosted by Rashida Jones. Event takes place May 20 in NYC, with a joint broadcast of the program airing Friday, June 2 at 9p. Now-shuttered Pivot previously aired the show.


Mira Sorvino will recur in AT&T Audience’s straight-to-series drama Condor, inspired by 1975’s Three Days of the Condor.


Y&R announced the launch of a global social impact practice, Y&R Inspire Change, aimed at helping nonprofits and brands incorporate social purpose strategies. Using proprietary research on the “new landscape of philanthropy,” the agency explored connections between social media, brand and business success. “Our research shows that the lines are blurring more than ever between nonprofits and corporations,” said Shelley Diamond, chief client officer of Y&R. “To succeed today, nonprofits need to think and act more like corporations to grow and innovate, and businesses have a mandate from their consumers to think as much about compassion and purpose as they do about commerce.”

Marking Autism Awareness Month, NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises launched an Autism pillar under the El Poder En Ti ‘Tu Salud’ initiative, its year-round health platform.The initiative will promote autism awareness by featuring PSAs, autism related health segments on Telemundo news programs, collaborate with national organizations like Autism Speaks and Best Buddies International, and host a dedicated digital destination.


Apple is exploring the idea diving into the streaming video and content market by bundling HBO, Showtime and Starz and selling them as a single premium channel, according to Recode. While it appears Apple is no longer looking at offering its own live TV service, Apple CEO Tim Cook has made it clear the company is interested in owning and creating video content.

Blend Media, the 360 degree video and VR content and creator platform company, inked a global licensing and distribution agreement with AccuWeather to provide AccuWeather’s library of immersive, proprietary 360° video content to brands, agencies and publishers. AccuWeather introduced immersive 360° extreme weather event videos, including tornadoes and blizzards, in 2016. New videos are added to the library every week through AccuWeather’s network of weather experts.

Students from LA-area film and communication schools are playing Jimmy Olsen for the TCM Classic Film Festival, reporting, commenting on and capturing video from the over 80 April 6-9 events. Student content will be shared on Facebook, Facebook Live, Twitter, Instagram and Tumbler, with content amplified by TCM’s social media. Pola Changnon, SVP of marketing, creative and brand for TCM, tells Cynopsis, “The TCMU program allows us the opportunity to create and foster a connection with the next generation of classic film fans though social media. The goal of the program is to continue to attract new and broader audiences of movie fans to the network.”


Hit YouTube show Bravest Warriors landed a 52×11 minute fourth season, as well as its first TV run, slated for fall 2018 on Canada’s Teletoon. The intergalactic animated series is being produced by Nelvana Limited in association with Frederator Studios for multiple platforms, including linear with complementary digital content.

Ahead of the premiere of Pretty Famous on Tuesday, April 18 at 9p, Freeform is asking viewers to submit videos of themselves singing, dancing, acting, telling a funny story or demonstrating makeup how-tos. Winner gets to flirt with fame with a trip to LA for the show’s premiere, and a walk on the red carpet.

The Late Late Show with James Corden’s YouTube Channel surpassed 10 million subscribers and earned the Diamond Play Button in just over two years since the show debuted. Corden marked the occasion with a music video, of course – parodying Rihanna’s “Diamonds.”


Roku announced audience guarantees for TV advertisers, based on Nielsen Digital Ad Ratings, allowing buyers to target specific demos. Roku says it’s the first OTT platform to offer guarantee audiences TV style. “Roku is pushing the industry forward to adopt verification standards for media buying,” said Britney Greenhouse, director of video and digital investment at Horizon Media, in a statement. “We have been working together with Roku to pilot the audience guaranteed product. We’ve seen positive match rates with Nielsen which are a good sign.”

Cross MediaWorks announced the launch of one2one Media, aimed at providing a neutral and scalable addressable video business for agencies and advertisers, in partnership with Multichannel Video Programming Distributors. Michael Bologna, president, and Jamie Power, COO, are heading the effort. 


Mongol TV acquired the license of The Voice for Mongolia from Talpa. Mongol TV will start producing its version in summer 2017 for broadcast in 1Q18.

Spain’s TVG licensed a 65-episode season 2 of Armoza Formats’ game show Babushka, locally titled Ti Veras and produced by Productora Faro.

MF Yapim and MEDYAPIM acquired format rights to drama rights for Woman  My Life for My Children from Japan’s Nippon Television Network Corporation, and will be remaking the series in Turkish. The drama is set to air on Fox Turkey.

UK-based Magnify Media announced the first format license for Plimsoll Production’s Rescue Dog to Super Dog, going into production this spring for French-speaking Belgium public-service broadcaster RTBF, which will produce a 3 part series to air later this year.

Entertainment One scored another round of international sales for procedural Private Eyes starring Jason Priestley (Call Me Fitz) and Cindy Sampson (Rookie Blue), including ION Television (U.S.), Universal Channel (Australia), Fox Networks Group (Italy, Hungary, Bulgaria, Balkans), SBS (Belgium), COMOTE TV (Greece), and FTV PRIMA (Czech Republic).

Breakthrough Entertainment announced the Canadian national broadcast premiere of Searching for Vimy’s Lost Soldiers on Sunday, April 9 at 9p on History, to coincide with the 100-year anniversary of what is considered Canada’s most famous and enduring victory throughout its venerable military history.

CBS Sports and Turner Sports’ coverage of the 2017 NCAA Tournament is ranking as the second most watched in 23 years. Saturday’s Final Four games delivered audience increases averaging 16.8 million viewers, making it the second most-watched Final Four in 19 years, trailing only 2015.
