Urban Radio Networks’ April Ryan, who’s made headlines for clashing with the Donald Trump administration, has been named a CNN political analyst. Last week, White House press secretary Sean Spicer drew criticism for ordering Ryan to “stop shaking your head” as he chastised her for pressing him about the “Russia issue.” Ryan made the announcement via Twitter.
The FCC is reversing the President Obama-era “overbuild” requirement of the Charter Communications/Time Warner Cable merger that called for Charter to extend broadband service to 1 million households already served by another provider. Under the revised order, Charter must still add 2 million potential subscribers, but in locations without existing service. The requirement was intended to “bring innovation and new choices for consumers,” said former FCC chairman Tom Wheeler last year. Yesterday, Wheeler tweeted, “Nobody likes competition…except consumers!”
New daily syndicated series DailyMail TV will launch across the U.S. in Fall 2017, with clearances from Sinclair Broadcast Group, Tribune Broadcasting and Gray Television. Initial coverage of the show, from Stage 29 Productions and Daily Mail On-Air, has reached 105 markets and 66% of the U.S. Exec producers include Carla Pennington (Dr. Phil), Jay McGraw (The Doctors), DailyMail publisher Martin Clarke and Dr. Phil’s Phil McGraw.
Live viewing in 4Q16 dipped to 4 hours and 23 minutes per day among adults 18+, versus 4:27 the year prior and 4:31 in 4Q14, according to Nielsen’s Q4 Total Audience Report. On the other hand, viewing rose one minute, to 33 minutes/day, for time-shifted shows. Smartphone media usage had the biggest gain: 2:32, versus 1:15 a year ago.
Cable news rode the 2016 election to big gains, according to Nielsen. Adults 18+ watched 44% more cable TV networks in 2016 than in 2015, with viewers averaging 6 ½ hours a week on cable news nets, an hour and a half more than in 2015. News consumption from smartphones rose by 50%.
NBC Sports Network is rolling the dice with Poker Central. The deal brings NBCSN exclusive TV rights from the Super High Roller Bowl as well as linear and digital rights to other poker events, Monday primetime poker event coverage starting in the fall, and streaming coverage of Poker Central content.

The Peabody Awards is partnering with PBS and Fusion for a TV broadcast of the 76th Annual Peabody Awards Ceremony, hosted by Rashida Jones. Event takes place May 20 in NYC, with a joint broadcast of the program airing Friday, June 2 at 9p. Now-shuttered Pivot previously aired the show.
Mira Sorvino will recur in AT&T Audience’s straight-to-series drama Condor, inspired by 1975’s Three Days of the Condor.
Y&R announced the launch of a global social impact practice, Y&R Inspire Change, aimed at helping nonprofits and brands incorporate social purpose strategies. Using proprietary research on the “new landscape of philanthropy,” the agency explored connections between social media, brand and business success. “Our research shows that the lines are blurring more than ever between nonprofits and corporations,” said Shelley Diamond, chief client officer of Y&R. “To succeed today, nonprofits need to think and act more like corporations to grow and innovate, and businesses have a mandate from their consumers to think as much about compassion and purpose as they do about commerce.”

Apple is exploring the idea diving into the streaming video and content market by bundling HBO, Showtime and Starz and selling them as a single premium channel, according to Recode. While it appears Apple is no longer looking at offering its own live TV service, Apple CEO Tim Cook has made it clear the company is interested in owning and creating video content.
Blend Media, the 360 degree video and VR content and creator platform company, inked a global licensing and distribution agreement with AccuWeather to provide AccuWeather’s library of immersive, proprietary 360° video content to brands, agencies and publishers. AccuWeather introduced immersive 360° extreme weather event videos, including tornadoes and blizzards, in 2016. New videos are added to the library every week through AccuWeather’s network of weather experts.
Students from LA-area film and communication schools are playing Jimmy Olsen for the TCM Classic Film Festival, reporting, commenting on and capturing video from the over 80 April 6-9 events. Student content will be shared on Facebook, Facebook Live, Twitter, Instagram and Tumbler, with content amplified by TCM’s social media. Hit YouTube show Bravest Warriors landed a 52×11 minute fourth season, as well as its first TV run, slated for fall 2018 on Canada’s Teletoon. The intergalactic animated series is being produced by Nelvana Limited in association with Frederator Studios for multiple platforms, including linear with complementary digital content.
Ahead of the premiere of Pretty Famous on Tuesday, April 18 at 9p, Freeform is asking viewers to submit videos of themselves singing, dancing, acting, telling a funny story or demonstrating makeup how-tos. Winner gets to flirt with fame with a trip to LA for the show’s premiere, and a walk on the red carpet.
The Late Late Show with James Corden’s YouTube Channel surpassed 10 million subscribers and earned the Diamond Play Button in just over two years since the show debuted. Corden marked the occasion with a music video, of course – parodying Rihanna’s “Diamonds.”
Roku announced audience guarantees for TV advertisers, based on Nielsen Digital Ad Ratings, allowing buyers to target specific demos. Roku says it’s the first OTT platform to offer guarantee audiences TV style. “Roku is pushing the industry forward to adopt verification standards for media buying,” said Britney Greenhouse, director of video and digital investment at Horizon Media, in a statement. “We have been working together with Roku to pilot the audience guaranteed product. We’ve seen positive match rates with Nielsen which are a good sign.”

CBS Sports and Turner Sports’ coverage of the 2017 NCAA Tournament is ranking as the second most watched in 23 years. Saturday’s Final Four games delivered audience increases averaging 16.8 million viewers, making it the second most-watched Final Four in 19 years, trailing only 2015.
ESPN’s St. Louis/Chicago Major League Baseball game was the most live viewed and streamed opening night every, with 3.6 million viewers (up +25% from last year) – 3.7 million when streamers are counted.
Bounce posted its highest-rated quarter among P25-54 (146,000), P18+ (257,000) and Total Viewers 2+ (298,000) in 1Q17, growing by as much as +10% in HHs and key demos in Prime versus 1Q16.
