Neil Patrick Harris will host and exec produce NBC game show Genius Junior, testing the smarts of 12 teams of kids. “The contestants are kids, so they’re destined to be hilarious or, you know, snap. Win/win,” said Harris. “I kid. #pun.” Shed Media is producing. Harris-hosted variety show Best Time Ever was canceled after one season on the network, but true to their word at the time, NBC and the Emmy winner’s Prediction Productions stayed in business.
In more NBC news, the net moved the premiere of Jennifer Lopez dance competition World of Dance from May 8 to Tuesday, May 30 at 10p, a comfy perch following the launch of America’s Got Talent. The premiere of Hollywood Game Night was moved to Thursday, June 22 at 8p, while Midnight Texas’s arrival date was changed to Monday, July 24 at 10p.
The CW set its summer slate, including the launch of new action series Hooten & the Lady on Thursday, July 13 at 9p. Season 5 of Whose Line Is It Anyway? debuts Monday, May 29 at 9:30p, Masters of Illusion starts season 6 on Friday, June 30 at 8p, and Penn & Teller: Fool Us returns for season 4 on Monday, July 10 at 8p.
Face the Nation host and CBS News political director John Dickerson has been bumped up to Chief Washington Correspondent for CBS News. Steve Chaggaris was elevated to political director.
America’s Next Top Model is eliminating the age limit for contestants. “There have been 23 cycles of America’s Next Top Model, and every single cycle we say you have to be 27 years old or younger,” said original host and producer Tyra Banks in a video soliciting contestants. “You know what I hear all the time? ‘Tyra, come on! Why have an age limit?’ So, you know what? I’m taking that age limit off. You want to audition for America’s Next Top Model? I don’t care how old you are, honey. You just need to know how to smize and be open to learning how to work the runway like a supermodel.” ANTM returns for its second cycle on VH1, and 24th overall.
MMA drama Kingdom will end after its upcoming third season on AT&T Audience Network, which launches May 31. “We expect season three to be a great one and appreciate the hard work and dedication from creator and showrunner Byron Balasco, as well as the entire cast and crew,” said AT&T Audience and Endemol Shine Studios in a joint statement. “We could not be more proud to have worked with all of them on such an amazing series.”
Alec Baldwin is going to do his Donald Trump impersonation on Saturday Night Live’s current season as often as he can – but then it might be time to turn in the orange wig. “If everything stays the same in this country as it is now,” the actor told UK’s Press Association, “I don’t think people are going to be in the mood to laugh about it come September.”
Speaking of, Saturday morning, Donald Trump was at it again on Twitter, and this time Meet the Press host Chuck Todd was in the crosshairs. “When will Sleepy Eyes Chuck Todd and @NBCNews start talking about the Obama SURVEILLANCE SCANDAL and stop with the Fake Trump/Russia story?” tweeted the president on April 1. Replied Todd, “For those wondering, I slept well even tho I stayed up late watching the #msstate upset of Uconn. #cowbell. Don’t feel sleepy at all though.”

A memo from BET chairman and CEO Debra Lee on Thursday informing staff that Zola Mashariki, EVP and head of original programming at BET was leaving, apparently caught Mashariki by surprise. She said in a memo of her own that she was on medical leave, adding, “My job is protected by the Family Medical Leave Act…and I have a contract in place.” Responded BET, “These claims misrepresent the facts and are without merit.” Word of Mashariki’s departure came the same day it was announced that head of programming Stephen Hill was leaving.
YES Network, yanked from Comcast in 2015 in a retrans dispute, was back on Comcast Friday just in time for the Yankees/Braves pre-season game, and season opener on Sunday. An agreement between Comcast and YES owner 21st Century Fox was struck earlier this year.
It appears independent cable operators may have a friend in new FCC chairman Ajit Pai. Speaking at the American Cable Association’s annual summit, Pai said, “We don’t view you as an enemy, but rather someone we can work with to better enable our citizens take advantage of digital opportunity.” Unlike his predecessor, Tom Wheeler, Pai is a proponent of less regulation of the industry.
Freeform’s Shadowhunters won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Drama Series, while Amazon’s Transparent picked up the trophy for Comedy on Saturday. The awards ceremony, which honors the portrayals of LGBTQ stories, will air on Logo on Thursday, April 6 at 10p.
