IN THE NEWS

Score one for Lee Daniels and the Empire team. On Wednesday night, a judge tossed out a lawsuit filed by Jon Astor-White, who claimed that Empire infringed on a treatment he wrote for a project called King Solomon, about a character “who was educated at Harvard, started a small record label with one female singer and turned that into a billion-dollar business with numerous subsidiaries.” In federal court in California, Judge Percy Anderson shot down the lawsuit, granting the defendants’ motion to dismiss, noting that Astor-White alleged no facts supporting the possibility that the defendants, which also included Empire co-creator Danny Strong, Imagine Television and 20th Century Fox Film Corp., had access to his treatment.

TBS‘s Conan is heading to Asia for the first time for a special extended episode shot on location in South Korea. CONAN in Korea is set to premiere Saturday, April 9 at 11p. Late-night series’ host Conan O’Brien, who spent a week on location, was joined by Korean-American actor and The Walking Dead star Steven Yuen. The duo also teamed up with J.Y. Park to film a K-Pop music video. CONAN in Korea marks O’Brien’s fifth adventure in the past 12 months. Last spring, he made headlines as the first American late-night host to shoot in Cuba in more than 50 years.

Saturday Night Live rolls into April with three back-to-back shows and two first-time hosts. Oscar-winner Russell Crowe presides over NBC’s April 9 telecast, while country artist Margo Price makes her musical guest debut. Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) debuts as host on April 2 and will be joined by musical guest Gwen Stefani. Meanwhile, Julia Louis-Dreyfus returns for her third time as host on April 16. She’ll be joined by Nick Jonas as musical guest.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the 37th annual Worldwide Sports Emmy nominations on Thursday. ESPN thumped the competition with 40 noms, followed by Fox Sports 1 with 27. CBS led the broadcast networks with 21 noms, followed by Fox and NBC, which landed 19 each. Longtime CBS announcer Verne Lundquist will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

There’s a new host headed to Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Alyson Hannigan (How I Met Your Mother) will be taking over the duties on the CW competition reality show’s upcoming third season. “My oldest daughter and I are huge fans of the show, so I am so excited to be hosting a program our whole family can watch together,” said Hannigan. “I’ve always wanted to play Vegas!”

Pop superstar Ariana Grande and “New Americana” singer/songwriter Halsey are set to perform at the 2016 MTV Movie Awards. Kendrick Lamar will present the “True Story” award during the telecast. The show, hosted by Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart airs Sunday, April 10 at 8p.

Turner Classic Movies announced that Burt Reynolds is set to attend the 2016 TCM Classic Film Festival, taking place in Hollywood April 28 to May 1. The actor will participate in a sit-down interview about his life and career, as well as introduce a screening of The Longest Yard.

Women In Film and Franklin Leonard‘s The Black List are launching the Women In Film/The Black List Episodic Lab, a television lab for female writers. The initial lab runs for eight weeks, starting in August, with eight women writers to be selected. The initiative features script development, workshopping sessions and master classes with established writers and industry executives. Participants will have their pilots read by agencies and networks to be announced.

TV One reality series The Next: 15 will close with a two-part reunion airing on Sunday, April 3 and Sunday, April 10 at 7p. Special episodes feature exec producer/host Carlos King and cast.

Executive produced and narrated by Martin Sheen, the six-episode series is slated to premiere in early 2017.

Bob Daly has extended his overall deal with CBS for two more years. The comedy writer/producer vet currently serves as executive producer/showrunner on The Odd Couple and is the co-creator, EP and showrunner of comedy pilot Superior Donuts.

The six-hour docu-series hunts down missing treasures behind some of the most iconic moments in American sports history.

RETURNING SERIES

Lifetime series Devious Maids and UnREAL bow with new episodes on Monday, June 6. Devious Maids airs at 9p, followed by UnReal at 10p.

Who Do You Think You Are? returns to TLC on Sunday, April 3 at 9p with more celebrities embarking on journeys to trace their family trees. The season kicks off with Aisha Tyler, as she dives into her mother’s family history, tracking down the story of a man that had been lost over generations.

AT THE UPFRONTS

At Discovery Communications’ press breakfast on Thursday in NYC, CEO David Zaslav noted, “The basic elements of our business have turned significantly more positive. We’re spending more money on content and our brands.” Primary focus? “Growing audience around the world.” Zaslav explained the company is following ESPN’s road map for sports dominance in Europe, going direct to consumer with its Eurosport app.

But there was plenty to report on U.S. operations. Among the success stories: ID, the number one network for W25-54 in cable, season to date. A new slate of programming for the 2016-17 includes 13 new series and 16 returning true crime shows. “With the explosion of interest in crime programming, Investigation Discovery has been an unstoppable success,” said Henry Schleiff, group president.

Following its highest-rated quarter ever among P25-54/M18-49 and Women 25-54/18-49 in Live+3, Science Channel is bringing back event Punkin Chunkin and looking to repeat success with Search for the Next Mythbusters (the original ran for 15 seasons on Discovery). Upcoming specials include Mission Jupiter (wt), and live broadcasts of events like NASA space launches.

Discovery will launch 20 new series, two of them scripted: mini-series Harley and the Davidsons, and Manifesto, about the hunt for Unabomber Ted Kaczynski. Deadliest Catch spinoff Dungeon Cove will follow the lives of fisherman in Oregon, and competition The Wheel puts extreme survival experts to the test. “Discovery had a record-breaking 2015,” said Rich Ross, group president. “We are up among millennials and double digits with women, Hispanic and African American audiences. I believe this current slate of programming will continue to build the brand and attract an even more diverse audience.”

Paranormal programming has proven to be a winner for Destination America, so there’s more on tap – among upcoming new series are Ghost Brothers and Ghosts of Shepherdstown. Ghoul-free programming includes What’s for Sale: With a View, launching Wednesday, April 13 at 10:30p an BBQ competition Smoked on Wednesday, June 1 at 10p.

The shuttering of A+E Networks’ H2 (to make room for Viceland) is an opportunity for American Heroes Channel, now the only cable home for full-time history content, noted Schleiff. New programming will include series Civil War Chronicles and How the World Ends.

Velocity, the little network with the big engine, had its best-yet year, the number one non-sports network last year for M18-49/25-54 in 4Q15 among nets with less than 70 million subscribers. Under the hood for 2016/2017 are new series Speed Is the New Black (wt), Wild Rides Alaska (wt) and RMD Design (wt).

Nancy Daniels, president of TLC and Discovery Life, announced TLC’s first scripted series, eight-episode soapy drama Too Close to Home (wt), from Tyler Perry. “This is a big swing for us, but it’s something we’re excited about,” said Daniels. Nate Berkus lends design star power in Married to Design: Nate & Jeremiah (wt), and OutDaughtered focuses on the family of the only all-female set of quintuplets in the country. This summer, TLC is launching a new brand campaign, “I AM,” celebrating “the differences that make us who we are.”

Animal Planet takes viewers to The Zoo in a new documentary series, and offers two new veterinarian shows, Texas Vets and Penn Vet. Life of Dogs (wt) looks at canines from wild wolves to pampered pets, while programming event Animal Planet Presents will include films like Life After: Chernobyl.

 CASTING

Frances Fisher is heading to CBSCriminal Minds. According to TVLine, she’ll guest star as Antonia Slade, “a crazy UnSub who was put away by Mandy Patinkin’s Jason Gideon 15 years ago.”

Patrick J. Adams (Suits) has nabbed a role as a superhero in D.C.’s Legends of Tomorrow‘s first season finale, airing Thursday, May 19 on The CW. The character will return for a few episodes in Season 2.

Evan Handler has been upped to series regular on hip-hop drama The Breaks. He played Jonah "Juggy" Aaron in the original movie that has been ordered to series by VH1 for premiere later this year.

DIGITAL GOINGS

UnReal‘s first season fan-favorite, Faith (Breeda Wool), has landed her own show. Lifetime has launched The Faith Diaries, marking the net’s first scripted digital short series. All 10 episodes of the show are available on Lifetime’s website.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

Just in time for the world premiere of Fear the Walking Dead Season 2 in Slovakia, AMC Networks International  Central Europe has reached two deals for AMC’s distribution. As of today, Slovakia’s DIGI Slovakia and Slovak Telekom both add AMC to their lineup.

UK-based Woodcut Media has been commissioned by A+E Networks UK to produce Holloway: Women Behind Bars. The special takes an in-depth look at one of Europe’s largest female jails, which is due to close in summer 2016.

In other A+E Networks news, a deal has been struck with Orange TV to expand the distribution of its portfolio of factual entertainment brands. History, Lifetime, Crime+Investigation and H2 are all now available on Orange TV’s newly-launched IPTV service.

Zodiak Rights has confirmed additional sales of global scripted hit Versailles. In Russia, Channel One has picked up the series as well as Sony Pictures Television International Networks, which will broadcast it on pay TV channel Sony Entertainment Television in Russia and 15 countries in Eastern Europe. Other sales include Icelandic National Broadcaster RUV and RTP1 in Portugal, while Globosat Brazil and DirecTV pick up rights for Spanish speaking Latin America.

Studio 100 Media will create, supply and schedule a co-branded channel for the Middle East and North Africa region. The new channel “beJunior” will be available exclusively for pay TV subscribers of the beIN Media Group and is targeted at a children and family audience.
