IN THE NEWS

NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell has left his role at the company, after Comcast hired outside counsel to investigate a complaint against him. “Today is my last day as CEO of NBCUniversal,” said Shell in a statement on Sunday. “I had an inappropriate relationship with a woman in the company, which I deeply regret. I’m truly sorry I let my Comcast and NBCUniversal colleagues down, they are the most talented people in the business and the opportunity to work with them the last 19 years has been a privilege.” Shell’s team will report to Comcast President Mike Cavanagh. “We are disappointed to share this news with you,” said Cavanagh and Comcast CEO Brian Roberts in a separate statement.” We built this company on a culture of integrity. Nothing is more important than how we treat each other. You should count on your leaders to create a safe and respectful workplace. When our principles and policies are violated, we will always move quickly to take appropriate action, as we have done here.”

Nielsen is not prepared to participate in the Joint Industry Committee’s process for certifying companies for audience measurement. “There are fundamental legal, operational and scientific issues that will need to be resolved before Nielsen will agree to participate,” wrote Nielsen CEO Karthik Rao in a letter to David Levy, CEO of OpenAP. “This well-meaning process has been rushed, and we respectfully suggest that more time be spent addressing the above issues before a formal RFI is issued.” Rao sent the letter in response to a request for information that was due Friday.

Gayle King and Charles Barkley are teaming to host “King Charles” on CNN. Scheduled to premiere this fall, the live show will air at 9p on Wednesdays. “What I think is so great for the both of us is that it’s live TV,” King said during TNT’s NBA playoffs pregame coverage. “To me, live TV is like working without a net. So whatever happens, happens. I like that.”

Paramount Global will receive $167.5 million to settle a lawsuit filed by shareholders of the former CBS Corp., who alleged the company overpaid for Viacom so Shari Redstone could consolidate her family’s empire. The litigation between Viacom and CBS stockholders was initiated during the 2019 merger of the companies, and the recent SEC filing was its “final dismissal.”

Jennifer Grey said she didn’t reprise her “Friends” role due to anxiety. After the “Dirty Dancing” star’s appearance as Mindy – Rachel’s friend and former maid of honor – in season one of the series, Grey said, “I had such bad anxiety because they kept changing the script.” She continued, “It’s very hard to be a guest star because you’re not part of it, and you’re really trying to figure it all out. They were trying to figure out what the character was, what the scene was, and it was changing, and changing, and changing. It all made me so anxious that I could barely do it.” Grey was replaced with Jana Marie Hupp.

Docuseries “Convicting a Murderer,” a response to Netflix’s “Making a Murderer,” has been acquired by conservative news site DailyWire+. Like its Netflix predecessor, “Convicting a Murderer” chronicles the case of Steve Avery, exonerated in in 2003 after serving eighteen years in prison, but will offer a very different take, including “exclusive interviews with subjects not included in the Netflix show, including law enforcement officers, family members, and fans-turned-investigators whose lives have been profoundly impacted by the case.” The 10-part series, narrated by commentator Candace Owens, is set to debut this summer.

Eric Braeden, star of CBS soap “The Young & The Restless,” revealed his cancer diagnosis in a Facebook post. Braeden said he will continue playing Victor Newman, his role for 43 years, but on a modified basis. “I’ve learned now to listen to my body more, and not go all out,” he said. “So if you’ve seen me a little under the weather, yeah, I have been, but I will lick this. This bastard aint going to get me, I’m going to get it.”

Disney+ has canceled “National Treasure” after one season. The adventure series from Disney Branded Television and ABC Signature is the latest non-Marvel and “Star Wars” original series on the platform to have been canceled after one or two seasons.
