Paramount Global has responded to a lawsuit filed by Warner Bros. over streaming rights to “South Park” with its own legal action, contending WBD owes it millions in unpaid licensing fees. “Warner Bros. Discovery has indefensibly refused to pay the more than $50 million dollars it owes for ‘South Park’ content that it has undisputedly received and which HBO Max continues to air and exploit,” said a Paramount spokesperson. “Warner Bros. Discovery’s argument that Paramount Global was required to deliver additional South Park content is baseless and wholly unsupported by the parties’ agreement.” In its lawsuit filed in February, Warner Bros. accuses Paramount of reneging on parts of a 2019 licensing agreement that gave it rights to stream 23 seasons of “South Park” plus an additional three seasons. New “South Park” specials released on Paramount+ violated their deal, maintains WBD.

BuzzFeed News is shutting down, with BuzzFeed concentrating its news focus on HuffPost, “a brand that is profitable with a highly engaged, loyal audience that is less dependent on social platforms,” Jonah Peretti, CEO of BuzzFeed, told employees on Thursday. Peretti also said BuzzFeed is reducing staff by 15%. BuzzFeed bought HuffPost from Verizon Media in 2020.

“Dear Edward” will not make it to a second season on Apple TV+. The series was created by Jason Katims (“Friday Night Lights”) and based on the novel by Ann Napalitano.

Don Bongino, far-right host of Fox News Saturday night show “Unfiltered with Dan Bongino,” is leaving the network. “There is no acrimony. This isn’t like some WWE brawl that happened,” shared Bongino in his podcast. “We just couldn’t come to terms on an extension.” Fox will air “Lawrence Jones Cross Country” on Saturday nights for the time being with an encore of Greg Gutfeld’s program this weekend only.

New Cadence Productions has re-acquired the exclusive US licensing rights from HBO Max to “The Garcias,” canceled by the streamer after one season. NCP reports it is in conversations with various platforms to create a home not only for season one but for additional seasons as well.

Netflix handed a series order to “The Boroughs,” a supernatural mystery from EPs Matt and Ross Duffer. The drama is set in a retirement community in the New Mexico desert. “While the heroes in ‘The Boroughs’ have a few more years on them than the kids from ‘Stranger Things,’ they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits, and we can’t wait for you to join them on an adventure that is at turns scary, funny, and deeply touching,” said Matt and Ross Duffer.

FilmRise and Venture 10 Studio Group have partnered with Mars Wrigley to produce a new reality competition series, “Follow Me,” that shows fans what it takes to become massively famous in the social media age. Hosted and executive produced by Bethany Mota, the show debuts May 3 on The FilmRise Streaming Network before expanding to FilmRise AVOD and FAST partner platforms. “This is truly one of our most mainstream co-productions to date,” said Max Einhorn, SVP of Acquisitions and Co-Productions for FilmRise. “Think ‘Biggest Loser’ meets ‘Big Brother’ meets ‘The Circle.’ The series’ format combines two of the most popular mediums – social media and reality competition.”

The Roku Channel is diving deeper into Spanish-language content with six shows, including a third season of Jennifer Lopez’ “Thanks a Million,” this time shot entirely in Spanish as “Un Millon de Gracias.” Jaime Camil (“Jane the Virgin”) will narrate and executive produce “Desde La Raiz,” exploring the origins of Mexican products; social media star Juanpa Zurita pushes himself to the limit in challenges on “Carpe DM with Juanpa”; “La Divina Comida” and “Batalla en Abuela’s Kitchen” focus on food; and “Serenta De Las Estrellas” celebrates big names in Latin music. “The deep engagement we have seen within the Spanish-language content category on The Roku Channel in the US, as well as the exceptional growth of the service in Mexico, are all signs of the strong appetite for free ad-supported streaming amongst Spanish-speaking and bilingual audiences,” said David Eilenberg, Head of Content, Roku Media.

Global studio wiip and Indian production company Roy Kapur Films have set screenwriter Jeremy Brock (“The Last King of Scotland,” “Her Majesty Mrs. Brown”) to adapt “The Anarchy: The Relentless Rise of the East India Company” by William Dalrymple into a TV series. Executive producers on the project include wiip’s Paul Lee (“Mare of Easttown”), Roy Kapur Films’ Siddharth Roy Kapur (“Dangal”) and XPat Productions’ Naz Haider. Dalrymple will serve as a creative consultant.

Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”) is set to star in an Apple TV+ musical special, “Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas.” The holiday special, recorded live at the London Coliseum, will be directed by Hamish Hamilton and executive produced by Waddingham, Katy Mullan, Moira Ross, Raj Kapoor and Nick Todisco.

Michael Cyril Creighton has been bumped up to series regular in season three of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.”

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

“Rich & Shameless” returns to TNT with new standalone specials beginning with “Rodman’s Stolen Millions” on Sunday, May 7, following the NBA Playoffs. The true-crime anthology series tells the shocking, real stories of the consequences that befall great wealth in the sports world. Additional subjects include football’s deadliest hit, Hulk Hogan’s leaked sex tape, and the murder of NBA star Lorenzen Wright.

“The Horrors of Dolores Roach,” based on the Gimlet podcast, premieres Friday, July 7 on Prime Video. The eight-parter follows a recently released prisoner driven to shocking extremes to survive.

Bounce’s new series “Act Your Age” will return on Saturday, June 3 with two new episodes back-to-back starting at 8p. The premieres kick off the second half of the 16-episode first season, running weekly on Saturday nights through the summer. The series premiere was seen by 2.14 million viewers in its debut telecasts in March, making it the most-watched half-hour series launch in Bounce history.

Part three of French heist series “Lupin” kicks off October 5 on Netflix. Omar Sy stars as a professional thief.

TECH TALK

Google plans to merge DeepMind and the Brain team from Google Research, its primary AI research units, into one unit called DeepMind. “Building ever more capable and general AI, safely and responsibly, demands that we solve some of the hardest scientific and engineering challenges of our time,” said CEO Demis Hassabis. To do that, he wrote in a blog, the company must work with greater speed, stronger collaboration and execution, and to simplify the way decisions are made. Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of DeepMind, which Google acquired for about $500 million in 2014, will head the newly formed unit, while Jeff Dean, who oversaw the Google Brain team, is moving to a new role as chief scientist.

Twitter has begun removing legacy Blue verification check marks from users who have not signed up to pay the $8 fee now charged. Even users as well-known as Pope Francis, Kim Kardashian and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey were stripped of their checks. Elon Musk had tweeted last week that the “final date for removing legacy Blue checks is 4/20.” Not that the biggest development in Musk’s world yesterday involved Twitter, or 4/20. While the mogul’s unmanned SpaceX rocket achieved liftoff, it exploded minutes later. Or, as SpaceX put it in a tweet, “Starship experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly before stage separation.”

COMING UP

The JIC of TV-based media sellers and agencies focused on cross-media platform measurement, formed in January, is holding an event on Thursday, April 27 in NYC. Speakers will include execs from Dentsu, Havas Media, GroupM, Magna, and Omnicom Media Group and measurement/data companies including Comscore, Innovid, iSpot, Nielsen, Samba TV, VideoAmp, 605, and event host OpenAP, as well as Geico, MediaLink, and Roku.

Jennifer Coolidge will be honored with the “Comedic Genius” Award at the “2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards,” airing live on Sunday, May 7 at 8p.

BritBox International announced its plans for the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, taking place on Saturday May 6. BritBox’s coverage will include major ITV News’ live broadcast of the occasion, produced by ITN (available on BritBox’s owned and operated platform only), hosted by Tom Bradby and Julie Etchingham. BritBox will also offer wider catch-up, original short form and Royal documentary programming.

Suspense thriller “Death’s Roulette” premieres Friday, May 5 on Paramount+. The Spanish-language film centers around seven strangers who wake up in a mansion in the middle of nowhere to discover they are part of a twisted game. They will have 60 minutes to choose one person to die; otherwise, all of them will be murdered.

Lily Tomlin will be presented with the Peabody Career Achievement Award and Issa Rae with the Peabody Trailblazer Award at the 83rd annual Peabody Awards on June 11 in LA. Jessica Williams (“Shrinking”) is set as host.

The 2023 Tribeca Festival announced its lineup of world premieres of new and returning television series. Among this year’s TV offerings are premieres of Max’s “Full Circle,” about an investigation into a botched kidnapping; Prime Video’s “The Horror Of Dolores Roach,” a Sweeney-Todd inspired tale; and BET+’s “Diarra From Detroit,” a dark comedy executive produced by Kenya Barris.

STREAMING

Roku is offering advertisers a “Primetime Reach Guarantee,” aimed at bringing “a key benefit of cable advertising to TV streaming advertising.” The guarantee “prioritizes” delivery to unique households across The Roku Channel and the additional top 100 channels on the platform. “TV streaming has long brought precision and measurement to the largest screen in the home,” said Kristina Shepard, Roku’s Co-Head of US Brand Sales. “Now, marketers can launch campaigns knowing they will deliver meaningful reach and impact quickly, too.” Roku has 70 million active accounts.

Bosco+ FAST channel, dedicated to high school sports, is headed to free streaming platforms Sports.TV, HBCU GO, and Local Now. Allen Media Group, in partnership with St. John Bosco High School (Bosco) of Bellflower, CA, is slated to launch the new Bosco+ FAST channel in Spring 2023.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball is partnering with FloSports to live-stream all league Championship Season games. Under the banner of FloBaseball, the subscription service will live-stream ALPB regular season and playoff game in 2023. It’s the first league-wide broadcast agreement in the 25-year history of the ALPB. “This is a landmark opportunity for the Atlantic League to continue to grow our brand,” said ALPB President Rick White. “Our FloBaseball partnership will expand the reach of each club, serve existing and new markets, plus grow viewership and fan engagement. For the first time ever, fans can watch their favorite club’s home and road games, plus any other ALPB games they want to see.”

Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers and Linus Ullmark of the Boston Bruins will be featured on the “2023 NHL Regular Season Awards Show,” airing Saturday, April 22at 12:20p on NHL Network.

ONE Championship and Prime Video present 10 MMA and Muay Thai bouts on “ONE Fight Night 9: Nong-O vs. Haggerty.” The event will be headlined by a ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Championship showdown between eight-time ONE World Champion Nong-O Hama of Thailand and former ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Jonathan Haggerty of the United Kingdom. Prime Video members can tune tonight, April 21, starting at 8 p.

Silverlining Rights has closed more presales for Blink Films’ new documentary on King Charles, “My King Charles”: RTS (Switzerland), TV2 (Hungary), TV2 (Slovenia), RTBF (Belgium), TVP (Poland), MBC (MENA region) and Nelonen (Finland).

Paramount+ is adding Korean series “A Bloody Lucky Day” and “Queen Woo” to its global platform. Both series were produced under the global partnership between Paramount Global and CJ ENM.
