The second of three planned rounds of layoffs at Disney is set to start next week. Job cuts will impact 15% of staff in Disney’s entertainment division, reports Bloomberg. Eliminations are also reportedly scheduled for ESPN, including on-air talent and management. The company announced in February it planned to eliminate 7000 jobs.
ID topped this year’s Beta Research Brand Identity Study, ranking the top- ranked basic cable networks, with 54% of respondents describing the true-crime hub as a “favorite” channel. History and Comedy Central were a close second (both 53%), followed by National Geographic and Animal Planet (both 51%). The top ranked cable networks described as “valuable” were Weather Channel (64%), Animal Planet (58%), National Geographic (57%), History (55%), and Discovery Channel and Nat Geo Wild (both 54%). On the streaming front, among viewers with three or more major streaming services, Disney Channel (58%), A&E (55%), National Geographic, Comedy Central and Animal Planet (all 53%), and Discovery Channel and ID (both 50%) were the basic networks with programs that viewers said they like or would like to watch on a streaming service.
Netflix beat Wall Street earnings estimates for 1Q23, but missed analysts’ estimates for streaming subscribers, adding 1.75 million versus 2.06 million. Earnings per share were $2.88 with revenue of $8.162 billion. The company plans a broader rollout of paid password sharing into the second quarter. “We are growing and we are profitable,” said Co-Chief Executive Ted Sarandos in the company’s post-earnings video interview. “We have a clear path to accelerate growth in both revenue and profit, and we’re executing it.”
Netflix also explained the technical issues that spoiled what was intended to be a live broadcast of the “Love Is Blind” season four reunion on Sunday. “We’ve got the infrastructure,” said Co-CEO Greg Peters during an earnings cal. “We had a bug that we introduced, actually, when we implemented some changes to try to improve live-streaming performance after the last live broadcast, Chris Rock, in March. We just didn’t see this bug in internal testing because it only became apparent once we put multiple systems interacting with each other under the load of millions of people trying to watch ‘Love Is Blind.’” The good news? The show – eventually – delivered 6.5 million viewers.
Netflix has canceled “Bling Empire” after season three, and its spinoff “Bling Empire: New York” after season one. The reality shows followed wealthy Asian Americans as they attended fabulous parties and went on wild spending sprees.

A comedy series is in development that would star Will Ferrell as a professional golfer who joins a controversial new league competing with the PGA, reports Deadline. The project comes from Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum’s Gloria Sanchez Productions and Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T-Street.
A TV series adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” books is in early development at Lionsgate Television. Sinead Daly (“Tell Me Lies”) is attached to write the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Fred Rogers Productions has formed the Writers’ Neighborhood, a five-year initiative focused on identifying and supporting new and emerging writers from underrepresented racial groups as they build careers in children’s media. Applications for the program’s second eight-week run will be accepted from May 1 to May 15.
Natasha Rothwell (“Insecure”) is checking into “The White Lotus” for season three. Rothwell was nominated for her role as spa manager Belinda in season one of the HBO anthology series.

“Gabby’s Dollhouse,” will make its linear debut on Monday, May 1 at 8p on Nick Jr. Following the premiere of the hybrid live-action and animated series, new episodes from the first season will continue to roll out Monday through Thursday for three consecutive weeks.
Season three of “Awkwafina is Nora from Queens” premieres Wednesday, April 26 at 10:30p on Comedy Central. Among the guest stars will be Michael Bolton, Janeane Garofalo, Ken Jeong, and Frankie Muniz.
Also returning for a third season is OWN’s “Belle Collective.” The series, following six successful women in Jackson, Mississippi, returns Friday, May 19 at 8p.

Comedy Central unveiled the third round of guests hosts for “The Daily Show.” Charlamagne Tha God anchors the week of May 15, followed by a News Team takeover. Michelle Wolf sits at the desk the week of June 5, followed by Ronny Chieng, Lewis Black and Desus Nice.
ABC News and The Associated Press are collaborating on a true-crime documentary focused on the Ku Klux Klan. Based on an investigative AP series, the doc captures the infiltration of the Klan in northern Florida by a former Army infantryman. “Grand Knighthawk: Infiltrating the KKK” premieres April 27 on Hulu.
“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” will make its broadcast television debut Thursday, May 25 at on ABC as part of the net’s “The Wonderful World of Disney” lineup. Airings throughout May and June follow, beginning Sunday, May 28 at 7p on FX and Saturday, June 10 at 8:10p on Freeform.
“Reality” debuts Monday, May 29 at 10p on HBO. The film, written and directed by Tina Satter, is based on her 2019 play, “Is This A Room.”
Ana Gabriel, Emilia, Evaluna, Goyo and Thalia are set to perform at “Billboard Mujeres Latinas en la Música,” to be taped on Saturday, May 6 and air on Sunday, May 7 at 9p on Telemundo and Universo. The show will also stream simultaneously on the Telemundo app and on Peacock.
J Balvin will perform at Vevo’s Newfronts presentation, set for May 4 at 4:30p at Sony Hall in NYC. Balvin has released Vevo Official Live Performances twice, the first of which set a Vevo record for highest-viewed piece of original content, and pushed him to be the most-viewed artist on Vevo in 2020.

Through Q1 of 2023, SVOD lost 2.2 million subscribers compared to 2Q22, while AVOD gained 2.6 million subscribers and FAST gained 1.7 million users, according to an analysis by Kantar’s Entertainment on Demand service. Additional findings include:
· From December 2022 to March 2023, the number of households with video streaming declined 0.3 million, reaching a total of 115.3 million households. Household penetration of video streaming is now 89%.
· Stacking continues to climb. The average household uses 5.5 different streaming services, up from 5.4 in 2Q22.
· 6% of US households used a new streaming service in 1Q23, down from 7% in Q4.
· Losses in SVOD subscribers in 1Q23 can be traced to Apple TV+, Netflix, and Discovery+.
· Among new services used in 1Q23, Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, and Paramount+ had the largest gains for the third quarter in a row.
· Children’s content is increasingly driving sign-up, now at roughly the size of sports. For paid streaming, children’s content now drives 8% of new subscriptions.
Fox Television Stations and Amazon are partnering to distribute FTS’s local news content across Amazon’s devices. FTS is providing 17 local FAST channels, one from each market covered by the Fox Television Stations, via the Amazon News app on Fire TV and Alexa on Echo Show devices. “We know that choice and accessibility matter to our viewers and this launch is another key step in our overall strategy and goal of giving our viewers the live and on-demand content from the stations they love,” said Jeff Zellmer, FTS SVP, digital operations.
Fuse Media has expanded its agreement with Amazon to launch two additional FAST channels – Latino Vibes and OUTtv Proud – on Amazon Freevee. The launch marks the debut of OUTtv Proud in the US. Fuse Media’s Shades of Black and Backstage FAST channels launched on Freevee last year.

Intersport announced plans for a neutral site college basketball contest between border foes Ohio State and West Virginia on December 30. The event will take place in Cleveland, with game time and venue to be announced at a later date. Intersport will lead the event operations. Ohio State is an annual participant in the CBS Sports Classic and West Virginia will take part in the Fort Myers Tip-Off in November.
The Ravens Broadcast Team plans to offer first round coverage of the NFL Draft on Thursday, April 27, streamed on free app Very Local. Live coverage begins at 8p, with the Ravens Broadcast Team hosting from three different venues.
Lay’s unveiled the first soccer field in the US made from chip bag packaging. Through its global program Lay’s RePlay, which creates sustainable soccer fields from disposed Lay’s Potato Chip bags, the company opened the Lay’s RePlay field in Santa Ana, CA. The field is made with recycled bags and packaging materials that are washed, shredded and converted into an underlying layer that is designed to be recycled at the end of its 10-year lifespan.

Armoza Formats announced that reality competition format “The Fittest Pensioner” has been commissioned in Poland. The local adaptation will air on Polsat. Originally created and produced by Montreux Film, the format aired on TV2 in Norway and boosted the channel’s average share by 20%.
Sky has commissioned a third season of kids show “The Brilliant World of Tom Gates” from TG Entertainment Limited. The series is currently in production and will be available on the Sky Kids channel and on demand, as well as on streaming service NOW in the UK & ROI in early 2024.
Asian-focused media company EST Studios has acquired international sales rights for Fae Pictures series “Streams Flow from a River.”
Fremantle has acquired the global distribution rights to “Coco Chanel.” The feature documentary from WhyNow Productions details how Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel started her own couture business at the turn of the 20th century and changed how women dressed for the modern world. “Coco Chanel” will air on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer as part of the flagship Arena strand in the UK later this year.
Following its successful debut of its “Destruction Decoded” series on RTL Germany’s free-to-air channel NTV, New York-based Big Media has secured a three year, multi-series output deal with the broadcaster.
Less than one year after its international launch, Amazon Prime Video Channel Pash is now also available in Poland and France. Operated by Studio 100 Media and ZDF Studios, Pash offers viewers kids & family programs.

Sports platform OutKick reports it finished March with its second highest month ever in multiplatform unique visitors with over 10 million and 376% year-over-year growth, as well as 55 million total multiplatform minutes, up 289% versus March 2022. OutKick also delivered 46 million in total multiplatform page views, up 152% from the prior year.
FOX News Digital, which went through a homepage refresh in March, closed out the first quarter reaching 8.8 billion total multiplatform minutes, 5.2 billion total multiplatform views, and an average of 101 million monthly multiplatform unique visitors. The FOX NewsMobile app averaged 6.5 million unique visitors in the first quarter.
