IN THE NEWS

Members of the WGA voted to authorize a strike if the guild can’t reach a deal for a new film and TV contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers by May 1. The vote was 97.85% in favor of a walk-out. “Our membership has spoken,” said the WGA Negotiating Committee after the landslide. “You have expressed your collective strength, solidarity, and the demand for meaningful change in overwhelming numbers. Armed with this demonstration of unity and resolve, we will continue to work at the negotiating table to achieve a fair contract for all writers.”

The Media Rating Council has reinstated the accreditation of Nielsen’s National Television Audience Measurement service. Accreditation had been suspended in September 2021. “Nielsen has undertaken strong efforts to correct the issues that led to its loss of MRC accreditation 19 months ago and to restore key aspects of its panel performance,” said George W. Ivie, Executive Director and CEO of the MRC. “That said, there is still more work to be done both in the near and long term to ensure Nielsen’s National TAM measurements continue to meet our standards and the requirements of the industry.”

The reinstatement excludes the Digital in TV Ratings (dTVR) component of the TAM service, and also does not include Nielsen’s Local Market Television Service (which remains in an accreditation suspension status), Nielsen’s Digital Ad Ratings, the forthcoming integration of certain Return Path and ACR Data into the TAM service, or the Nielsen One measurement service.

Three-quarters of advertising execs expect to spend as much as last year or more during the 2023 TV Upfront, according to a survey from iSpot to determine how ad-buying plans will change this year, while also revealing more about the growing role of streaming and other key trends. Highlights of the report include:
· 61% of respondents expect 2023 upfront commitments to be similar or less flexible than previous years.
· 30% indicated at least one-fifth of upfront budget will be allocated toward digital streaming platforms.
· 74% of those intending to spend on streaming will do so with Hulu (vs. 48% with YouTube, 46% Peacock and 45% Roku).
· 69% responded they were very interested or somewhat interested in alternative currencies at this year’s upfronts.

Hulu Original drama “Reasonable Doubt,” from executive producers Raamla Mohamed, Kerry Washington and Larry Wilmore, has won a season two renewal. Morris Chestnut (“The Best Man”) is joining the drama’s sophomore season, alongside series regulars Emayatzy Corinealdi, McKinley Freeman, Tim Jo, Angela Grovey, Aderinsola Olabode and Thaddeus J. PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The slate of originals at AMC Networks’ Content Room, the production arm for digital programming, is expanding, including a season two order for “Cooper’s Bar,” which will premiere 30-minute episodes on IFC. Aftershow “Show Me More” is also returning. In addition, short-form series “Night Island” will focus on a pair of undercover art thieves; Colman Domingo (“Fear the Walking Dead”) is set to host a travel/memoir show, “You Are Here”; spinoff series “Jim Chee: Private Eye” expands the “Dark Winds” universe; “More Tales from the TWDU” (w/t) brings more “The Walking Dead” stories; Harry Hamlin stars in “In the Kitchen with Harry” (w/t); and “Night Market” connects to the e-commerce experience. “This year’s Content Room Originals boast alignment with some of AMCN’s biggest franchises and fan-favorite talent.” said Kim Granito, Head of Marketing for AMC Networks. “By listening to what our fans want, and developing with an eye towards partner collaboration, the opportunities for success are unlimited.”

ViX has signed an exclusive creative deal with screenwriters Esther Feldman (“El Dragón,” “Lalola”) and Francisco Franco Alba (“Locas de Amor,” “El Hotel de los Secretos”). Under the multiyear agreement, Feldman and Franco Alba will develop original ideas and adaptations for projects premiering on ViX.

Canada’s Apartment 11 Productions got the green light from TVOkids for its new original unscripted, live-action series “Green Squad, hosted by environmentally-savvy hosts who challenge other kids to make eco-friendly lifestyle changes. The series is set to premiere on the TVOkids broadcast channel, TVOkids.com, YouTube, and smart TV services in fall 2023.

UPFRONTS UPDATE

AMC Networks’ Upfront event takes place tonight, but some news just couldn’t wait – including the launch of an ad-supported version of its AMC+ streaming service planned for later this year. “This is a big moment for AMC Networks and for our advertising partners, because it not only creates a fully-ad supported distribution ecosystem, it also allows advertisers to buy our shows, genres and franchises in a much more comprehensive and impactful way,” said Kim Kelleher, Chief Commercial Officer of AMC Networks. “With our new series content, library titles and other targeted streaming platforms that are all bundled into AMC+, partners can move beyond individual shows and even series and choose to ‘own’ whole genres and franchises, and drive messaging to target audiences no matter what they are watching or where. We’ve never been able to offer this level of sweeping yet highly focused reach before in such an effective and comprehensive way.”

The company also unveiled Audience+, to ensure addressable ads are reaching desired audiences. “Never before have we been able to pull all of our viewership across all platforms, into one unduplicated view and see who is watching, what they are watching and when across linear, VOD, and all CTV streaming, to map a path to viewers across all of our shows and platforms,” said Evan Adlman, EVP of Commercial Sales and Revenue Operations. “Audience+ is also the culmination of all the development of our true cross platform addressable capabilities, allowing an advertiser to take one targeted data segment and singularly deliver it across all our linear networks and CTV streaming channels, inclusive of AMC+, to deliver unduplicated reach within all of our programming.”

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Freeform has set its summer lineup. Season two of “Cruel Summer” kicks off Monday, June 5 at 9p, while “grown-ish” returns for season six on Wednesday, June 28 at 10p. The net’s first animated series, “Praise Petey,” makes its debut Friday, July 21 at 10p, as part of “Family Guy” Friday.

Competition series “The Cube” is back for season two on TBS starting Sunday, May 14 at 9p, hosted by NBA champ Dwayne Wade.

HBO’s “The Idol” premieres Sunday, June 4 at 9p. The drama series follows a young woman (Lily-Rose Depp) determined to regain her pop star status after suffering a nervous breakdown.

“Secretos de Sangre” has its Telemundo launch on Tuesday, May 23. The Turkish drama revolves around a fearless lawyer and a respected prosecutor whose paths cross during a crime investigation.

STREAMING

Pluto TV will offer full previous seasons of series that are about to launch new seasons on Paramount Global networks, starting April 20 with “Mike Judge’s Beavis & Butt-Head.” Other shows getting the catch-up treatment include “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars,” “iCarly,” “Queen of the Universe,” “Joe Pickett” and “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.”

Spectrum News announced the launch of Spectrum News+, a streaming news network that provides localized reporting and stories from Spectrum News’ local news networks, as well as coverage of weather and broader topics and headlines. Spectrum News+ is available to Spectrum residential customers nationwide, including those who do not live in an existing Spectrum News market, via the Spectrum News mobile app and Roku and Apple TV streaming devices. “By combining the power of our deeply-rooted local newsrooms with objective coverage of the day’s headlines, we are helping our audiences connect with their communities while also providing them with a comprehensive view of the world around them,” said Alison Hellman, SVP, Spectrum News.

An obsession and oversaturation of big-budget content is unsustainable for streaming platforms and unrealistic for smaller productions to compete with, says documentary producer Paul Epstein (“Inside the Wild Frontier,” “We Are New York”). In Cynsiders, he offers a few words of advice.

Imagicomm Entertainment’s Cowboy Way FAST channel is now available on Vidgo. “We’re delighted to lasso in the Cowboy Way FAST Channel to Vidgo’s streaming lineup,” said Derek Mattsson, CEO at Vidgo. “The channel embodies the American West’s spirit, and our viewers will enjoy the authentic cowboy lifestyle, thrilling live events, and classic Western films and series they offer.”

The risk of livestreaming events was apparent Sunday night, when Netflix’s widely promoted “Love Is Blind” season four reunion special was delayed, apparently due to technical difficulties – and most viewers couldn’t access it until the next afternoon. “To everyone who stayed up late, woke up early, gave up their Sunday afternoon … we are incredibly sorry that the Love is Blind Live Reunion did not turn out as we had planned,” tweeted the streamer. “We’re filming it now and we’ll have it on Netflix as soon as humanly possible.”

TECH TALK

Magnite, the sell-side ad company, announced the launch of ClearLine, a direct buying solution that gives agencies access to video inventory within Magnite’s ecosystem. “While DSPs will remain the primary method for agencies to access premium video on our platforms, we’ve heard agencies’ requests for a more direct connection in certain scenarios,” said Sean Buckley, CRO at Magnite. “Clearline delivers agencies that additional path into our ecosystem while also benefitting media owners.”

Brightcove has entered into a partnership with Frequency, a cloud-based video platform powering linear channel creation for content providers. Frequency’s integration into Brightcove’s video platform is aimed at enabling customers to seamlessly create, launch and manage FAST channels to expand their reach and increase their revenue. “Empowering media companies to reach, engage and monetize new audiences is at the core of Brightcove’s Media Studio solution,” said Marc DeBevoise, CEO of Brightcove. “With this partnership, we are expanding the way our customers can grow via launching their own FAST channels directly from our powerful video platform. Our integration with Frequency will also help our customers centralize their video content, programming, distribution and ad monetization via an integrated workflow.”
