CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller is “on track for a full recovery” after suffering a mild heart attack, but is taking a leave of absence until the end of May. “Pilot season and the Upfront isn’t the best environment to achieve that recovery,” noted Geller in a note to staff. With CBS’s NYC May17 event on the horizon, CEO Les Moonves urged the troops to “step up with the same energy, dedication and passion that you bring to your jobs every day – and just a little more, given the situation.”
Yesterday, The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers asked the Writers Guild of America West and the WGA East to return to the bargaining table. The invite comes after the union said it was ready to resume talks “whenever the AMPTP is ready to meet.” A letter sent to WGA West members on Wednesday noted that while the WGAW board and WGAE voted unanimously to send a strike authorization vote to members before the union’s contract expires May 1, “Our goal remains the best possible deal before that date.”
Former Dancing with the Stars pro Cheryl Burke has started filming for Lifetime’s Dance Moms. Burke replaces choreographer Abby Lee Miller, who announced via an angry Instagram post on Sunday that she’d quit the show after 7 seasons. Miller is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty last year in a bankruptcy fraud case, but insisted it was frustration with the reality show’s production that sparked her exit, not the prospect of an orange jumpsuit.
Nielsen’s new offerings got a vote of confidence from beIN Sports. The network group signed a long-term deal for products in Nielsen’s Total Audience toolbox that includes access to Nielsen Digital Content Ratings and Total Content Ratings. “Nielsen Total Audience measurement provides us with complete visibility into how our viewers are engaged with our programs regardless of ad load,” said Antonio Briceno, deputy managing director at beIN. “We are confident in Nielsen’s linear and digital measurement capabilities as they enable us to effectively monetize our inventory and provide the confidence media buyers require to deliver better cross-screen campaign results to advertisers.”
Cable news networks aren’t the only ones getting mileage out of the new president. Two days after the announcement that Comedy Central’s Daily Show is launching the Donald J. Trump Twitter library, the net claimed it’s adding The President Show to its lineup. “Late night is broken,” said the announcement. “A TOTAL DISASTER. I alone can fix it! @PresidentShow.” Details were scant, but Comedy’s The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore was canceled last August after a year-and-a-half. At the time, network president Kent Alterman said the plan was to name a full-time replacement for Wilmore sometime this year – but then came the election.

Crown Media Family Networks held an Upfront celebration for media buyers on Wednesday at NYC’s landmark Rainbow Room. Bill Abbott, Crown Media president & CEO, opened the presentation with brief remarks. “Our brand has become one of the highest profile brands in entertainment with high quality original content that consistently delivers high ratings and makes both of our networks such a unique success story,” said Abbott. “Hallmark is synonymous with trust, emotional connections, caring, holidays, and celebrating life’s special moments every day. These touchstones are essential building blocks as we create content across multiple genres, and market and promote it in an intentional way.”
Crown Media’s EVP of advertising & digital sales, Ed Georger, spoke to the Hallmark brand promise and the importance to advertisers of the environment in which they convey their marketing messages. “Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries are, quite simply, two of the most trusted brands on television. And based on recent news, with major advertisers pulling their ads from digital platforms that deliver objectionable, off-brand content, it is clear how incredibly important it is for you to trust that your commercial messages air in a safe environment,” said Georger. As for data, “Everyone is talking about new data but we know what still matters most…delivering Nielsen ratings in the weeks and months in which they are planned.”Reinforcing the company’s ongoing growth and success, Georger noted that Hallmark Channel was the most watched and highest rated network on all of cable among women 25-54 for the entire fourth quarter last year, while Hallmark Movies & Mysteries has grown 83% over the past 2 years.
The evening was emceed by Debbie Matenopolous and Mark Steines, co-hosts of Hallmark Channel’s two-hour daily lifestyle program, Home & Family. Also in attendance were other familiar faces from Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries’ current and upcoming programming, including Danica McKellar, Kellie Martin, Kathie Lee Gifford, and Lacey Chabert. That presents an incredibly powerful opportunity for our advertising partners this Upfront.”
