IN THE NEWS

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah is opening a pop-up library of President Donald Trump’s tweets. The library, opening in New York City in June, “will be so tremendous that you’ll get tired of the tremendousness, so it will then close a few days later,” said Comedy Central in a press release. “Sad!”

On an unrelated note, Trump tweeted yesterday, “If the people of our great country could only see how viciously and inaccurately my administration is covered by certain media!”

The Academy of Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences is taking steps to avoid a repeat of the mishap that led to the wrong film being named best picture at this year’s Oscars – but it doesn’t include firing PriceWaterhouse Coopers. While acknowledging, as PwC has, that the accounting firm was responsible for the debacle, the Academy is instead instituting new protocols. Those include a greater oversight role for PwC US chairman Tim Ryan, a third balloting leader who will sit in the control room with the directors, the return of one of the accountants in charge of balloting from 2002-2014, and the removal of electronic devices backstage (accountant Brian Cullinan had reportedly been tweeting backstage before handing presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway the wrong envelope).

Do you think the Academy should have replaced the accountants responsible for the Oscars mistake? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

ABC yanked freshman drama Time After Time from its slate after 5 episodes. The time travel show was averaging .5 among A18-49 and 2.2 million viewers. Taking its place for the next 3 Sundays at 9p will be Match Game.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association set December 11 as the date nominations for the 75th Annual Golden Globes will be announced, for a show airing Sunday, January 7, 2018 on NBC. Last year’s trophy-fest averaged 20 million viewers and a 5.6 rating among A18-49, the second-most-watched broadcast in the last 10 years.

In a New York Times column on Wednesday, former FCC head Tom Wheeler lamented votes in the Senate and House to overturn rules that keep internet service providers from selling personal information. The bill, now headed for the POTUS pen, “not only gives cable companies and wireless providers free rein to do what they like with your browsing history, shopping habits, your location and other information gleaned from your online activity,” Wheeler warns Times readers, “but it would also prevent the Federal Communications Commission from ever again establishing similar consumer privacy protections…. I understand that network executives want to produce the highest return for shareholders by selling consumers’ information. The problem is they are selling something that doesn’t belong to them.” Wheeler also pointed to a recent FCC vote to stay requirements that internet providers take “reasonable measures” to protect consumers’ confidential information as another “gift to the industry” that poses a risk.

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and JCS International have launched the JCS International Young Creatives Award, which kicks off with “Women Peacemakers” as its inaugural theme. Competition is open to entrants between the ages of 18 and 29.

Fox’s Bones may be buried after 12 seasons, but props up for auction include Agent Booth’s office furniture, Dr. Brennan’s lab coats, wardrobe, jewelry and more. Auction site ScreenBid is hosting the sale of over 1000 items. Lots begin closing Thursday, April 13.

LEGAL BRIEFS

Two African American women filed a lawsuit against Fox News and fired comptroller Judy Slater on Tuesday for what they called a broad pattern of “top-down racial harassment,” including Slater stereotyping African Americans’ speech, and asking one of the women if all 3 of her children were fathered by the same man. “There is no place for inappropriate verbal remarks like this at Fox News,” said the net, which axed Slater after an investigation. “We are disappointed that this needless litigation has been filed.”

VIDEOS IN SHORT

Both are produced in Nashville and will be featured and distributed via Rare Country’s digital properties and made available for use across all Cox Media Group properties. With our vast distribution via Facebook, Rare and Cox Media, we have the potential to reach 30 million impressions, and with these new series.”

RESEARCH

Households equipped with broadband but not subscribing to a traditional multichannel video package grew by more than 2 million in 2016, according to a report from Kagan, a group within S&P Global Market Intelligence, with one out of 6 broadband-subscribing homes making the decision not to take a traditional multichannel package at the end of 2016. And the FCC’s efforts to “close the digital gap,” widening the availability of high-speed data, will only magnify the trend, says the report.

TV news shows and how-to programming rate highest among media consumers when it comes to trust. A report from GFK’s MRI notes 49% of TV news viewers and 48% of how-to fans “strongly trust” the networks that air that programming. Spanish-language networks were next with 45%, followed by 40% for kids/family nets. General interest/entertainment programming on broadcast networks got the lowest mark: 27%.
