IN THE NEWS

Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys will serve as coaches for season 11 of NBC’s The Voice. The singers replace Pharrell Williams, who has been onboard for four seasons back to back, and Gwen Stefani, who had rotated with Christina Aguilera. Stefani is on tour with her new album, and Williams, who tweeted a note welcoming Cyrus to the Voice family, is expected to return. Cyrus is currently advising talent on season 10 of the singing competition, a role Keys played in season seven. Blake Shelton and Adam Levine remain onboard.

CBS gave renewals to 11 series: dramas Blue Bloods, Elementary, Hawaii Five-0, Madam Secretary, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans and Scorpion, comedies Mom and 2 Broke Girls and reality competitions Survivor and The Amazing Race. The shows join previously renewed Big Bang Theory and NCIS. Still awaiting word: Criminal Minds, CSI: Cyber, The Odd Couple and the freshman class, including Code Black, Life in Pieces, Limitless and Supergirl.

HBO is breaking up with critically applauded Togetherness. Season two of the canceled comedy, averaging 330,000 viewers in Live+SD, wraps Sunday, April 10. As for show creators Jay Duplass and Mark Duplass, who have an overall deal with HBO,  “We look forward to continuing our strong creative collaboration,” said the pay cabler.

Donald Trump may have sworn off debates, but the GOP frontrunner will take the stage for an MSNBC town hall on Wednesday, March 30, hosted by Chris Matthews in Green Bay, ahead of Wisconsin’s April 5 primary. Fox News Channel was forced to cancel a Republican candidate debate scheduled for March 21 after Trump declared he thought there had been “enough debates” and said he would not participate.

Season twelve of E!’s Keeping Up with the Kardashians premieres Sunday, May 1 at 9p. Season three of TNT’s The Last Ship launches Sunday, June 12 at 9p, with a two-hour premiere. Sophomore run will be released May 3 on Blu-ray and DVD.

Fox announced that Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Last Man On Earth have been renewed for new seasons. “We’re so proud of these comedies,” said Fox president of entertainment David Madden. “Each has its own unique voice, but they both boast terrific ensembles with stand-out characters and, of course, phenomenal writing, which are the hallmarks of all great comedies.”

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

U.S. ad spending will grow 5.1 percent this year, to $192.02 billion, estimates eMarketer, with TV spending up 2.5 percent to $70.6 billion and digital media up 15.4 percent, to $68.82 billion. But traditional TV sales, says the report, will “have a challenging hear ahead” as a result of declining viewership and competition from VOD and streaming services. In 2017, eMarketer forecasts digital media spending will top TV spend for the first time, $77.37 billion to $72.01 billion.
