IN THE NEWS

Cher pulled out of Lifetime movie Flint, scheduled to begin production next month. “This has been a project so near and dear to my heart, and I was truly looking forward to helping tell this story,” said Cher of the film about the Michigan water contamination crisis. “Unfortunately, I will be unable to leave Los Angeles during the scheduled filming as I am dealing with a serious family issue that prevents me from going on location for the April filming.” Cher was onboard not only as a star, but as an exec producer with Craig Zadan, Neil Meron and Katie Couric.

White House press official Boris Epshteyn, who became a familiar face on cable news as a Trump stumper during the 2016 presidential campaign, is expected to leave his job, reported the New York Times on Saturday. Epshteyn, who grew up in Moscow and is an old friend of First Son Eric Trump, was responsible for managing appearances of White House officials on television.

Making the argument that producers earned record profits of $51 billion in 2016 while the average salary for TV writers/producers dropped 23% in the last 2 years, the negotiating committee for the Writers Guild of America voted to recommend a strike authorization vote. Among the issues the union is trying to address are “chronically low pay” for comedy variety writers, an increase in the residual formula for high budget SVOD programs, the “pernicious effects” of short seasons, script fees, and family leave. The current contract for members of WGA West and WGA East with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers expires May 1.

Raycom Media announced Sunday it had reached an agreement to restore its stations to the AT%T U-Verse lineup in 23 local markets. While AT&T had accused Raycom of holding out for more retrains dollars, Raycom suggested AT&T was using the dispute to get subscribers to switch to its DirecTV service. Stations went dark on March 15.

Alternative facts? The conservative American Action Network PAC jumped the gun with local market spots during CBS March Madness games on Friday, asking viewers to call their members of Congress to thank them for gutting the Affordable Care Act . Except, of course, the bill was pulled Friday afternoon ahead of the scheduled vote.

Emma Thompson: First Lady? The Love Actually star revealed on Norwegian/Swedish talk show Skavlan last week that that while she was newly divorced and filming the 1998 movie Primary Colors, inspired by Bill Clinton’s run for the White House, she got a phone call in her trailer from Donald Trump, offering her accommodation at a Trump property – and dinner. “ I think we would get on very well,” she said Trump told her. Thompson joked that while she declined to take Trump up on his offer, she wishes she hadn’t, saying, “Think of the stories.”

FCC chairman Ajit Pai dodged a reporter’s question on Thursday about why he wasn’t commenting on “fake news” allegations about news outlets he regulates, that use public airwaves he regulates. “That is a political debate and…my job is not to be a political actor but to be someone who is administering the laws of the United States, and so I am not going to wade into that kind of political debate,” said Pai.

Which cable news net do you trust most to cover the Trump administration? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

Fox News fired long-time comptroller Judy Slater for what it called “abhorrent behavior,” following accusations that she had made derogatory comments to Africa-American employees. “We take any complaint of this nature very seriously and took the appropriate action in investigating and firing Ms. Slater within two weeks of this being brought to our attention,” said Fox News in a statement.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

Amy Berg (DaVinci’s Demons), exec producer on the first season of Starz’ upcoming drama Counterpart, isn’t sticking around for the second straight-to-series run. J.K. Simmons stars in the show as a low-ranked bureaucrat who discovers his agency is guarding crossing into a parallel dimension.

Discovery ordered House of Cars (wt), an unscripted series headed for the net’s Motor Mondays lineup. Coolfire Studios is producing.

Who Killed Angie Dodge? Keith Morrison Investigates delves into the case of 20-year-old Chris Tapp, jailed for the murder of a girl whose mother worked to free him. On the heels of Tapp’s March 22 release from prison, the 2-hour ID special from NBC News Peacock Productions is slated for an early summer premiere. “When I first reported this story in 2012, I was amazed by Carol Dodge’s determination to help exonerate the man convicted of killing her own daughter,” Dateline NBC’s Keith Morrison tells Cynopsis. “I’ve been thinking about this case ever since my first visit to Idaho Falls, and it has only become more complex and controversial in the years that followed.”

A new overall deal with AMC Studios to develop new projects means Fear the Walking Dead showrunner Dave Erickson will give up that role at the end of the zombie drama’s upcoming third season, remaining as an executive producer. “We’re beyond grateful for Dave’s amazing work on the first three seasons of Fear the Walking Dead. With Dave as showrunner, the series fulfilled its creative promise to expand the Walking Dead universe in a way that was totally unique from the original series, and has gone on to become the number twodrama series in ad-supported cable,” said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and SundanceTV.

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM NCM

Beauty is a Beast in the Ratings Charts

Led by Beauty and the Beast, Logan, and Kong, NCM dominated the rating charts for the 6th week in a row with a huge 13.2 A18-34 rating. The only madness this month is leaving NCM out of your media plans.

We’re not the bracket-busting Cinderella – we’re America’s Movie Network: the Beast with the best content, most Millennial reach, and the data to back it up.

COMING UP

AMC is airing special editions of its Talking aftershow following the Better Call Saul season 3 premiere on Monday, April 10, and finale on Monday, June 12. The series’ cast, producers and celebrity fans will discuss the season and offers viewers a chance to ask questions.

HBO doc Rock and a Hard Place, looking at incarcerated young people given a second chance with a 6-month boot camp, debuts tonight at 10p. Dwayne Johnson, an exec producer along with his Seven Bucks Productions co-founder, Dany Garcia and Rasha Drachkovitch, co-founder and CEO of 44 Blue Productions, will appear in the film. “Rock & A Hard Place is one of the most powerful programs I’ve ever produced,” Drachkovitch tells Cynopsis. “I’ve been producing inside prisons for the past 20 years, and the Miami-Dade Boot Camp is one of the most effective program I’ve seen to combat recidivism.”

Will viewers of Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars be left hanging at the conclusion of the show, heading into the return of its seventh and final season on Tuesday, April 18? “We really wanted these last 10 episodes to be a love letter to the fans,” said PLL creator and showrunner I. Marlene King at a PaleyFest event on Saturday. “All the end games will be end games, but nobody is going to get there super easy.”

It’s back to Florence for Food Network’s Giada in Italy, starting a new season Sunday, April 9 at 12p.

The TV adaptation of stage play The Lost Souls Cafe airs on TV One Easter Sunday, April 16 at 6p. Film focuses on a restaurant lounge owner (The Carmichael Show’s Loretta Devine) working to save her business.

CASTING

It’ll be deja vu for CBS comedy fans when Leah Remini guests on the two-part season finale of Kevin Can Wait on Monday, May 1 and May 8 at 8p, reuniting her with her former King of Queens castmate, Kevin James. Remini will play a cop who goes undercover with Kevin, posing as his wife.

Controversial musician Chris Brown will guest on black-ish on Wednesday, March 29. Brown will play a rapper working on a campaign with Dre (Anthony Anderson) in the ABC comedy.

Marco de la O (Tanto Amor) has been cast in the role of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman in ripped-from-the-headlines drama El Chapo, focused on the rise to power and eventual downfall of the notorious criminal. Series premieres Sunday, April 23 at 8p on Univision.

John Leguizamo landed a role in six-part event series Waco, based on the true story of the 51-day standoff in Waco, Texas. Series produced by Weinstein Television will air on Paramount Network in 2018.

Taylor John Smith (American Crime) joined the cast of HBO drama Sharp Objects, starring Amy Adams. Eight-part drama is based on the book by Gillian Flynn.

NYPD Blue alum Sharon Lawrence is onboard CBS comedy pilot Me, Myself & I, examining a man’s life over a 50-year span.

DIGITAL DATA

Recode reports Twitter, Amazon, Facebook and YouTube are all competing for streaming rights to 10 NFL games. Twitter ponied up $10 for gridiron gold last season.

Comcast is collecting rights from cable network owners to offer their channels nationally, reports Bloomberg. The rights, which in some cases came as part of carriage negotiations, could allow Comcast to offer online TV nationwide. While the move does not mean Comcast has immediate plans for a video service, clarifies Bloomberg, grabbing the rights gives the company options in a landscape with a growing number of internet services like Sling TV and DirecTV Now.

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

Ad revenue for broadcast entertainment dipped 6.4% across dayparts in February, according to Standard Media Index, offset a bit by a 15.1% increase in broadcast news spending. Broadcast ad revenue in prime time had a 2.3% lift, led by NBC, up 11.3% annually thanks to freshman hit This Is Us. Cable news ad spending in prime rose almost 40%. As for digital, “The past six months have shown that a sizeable number of brands went too far and have started reassessing based on quality issues and falling sales,” said SMI CEO James Fennessy. “We expect this trend to accelerate in the coming months as the issues with YouTube are certain to have an impact on spend on non-premium platforms.” Brands like Verizon, Pepsi, Walmart and Johnson & Johnson pulled advertising from YouTube after it was discovered ads were appearing alongside extremist views and hate speech.

The Association of National Advertisers
issued an advisory after some of its members yanked those YouTube ads. “Their concern for their brands’ well-being is rational, appropriate and warranted,” said ANA CEO Bob Liodice. “No marketer should ever place its brand at risk.” Liodice pushed members, their agencies and media partners to “work energetically to…improve the quality of the digital media supply chain.”

VIDEOS IN SHORT

It starts with a woman sobbing in the bathtub, crying, “I can’t believe she’s gone. I miss her so much.” But the drama’s more about a purse than a relationship in one of the short films from Chanel surrounding the launch of its Gabrielle bag. “There’s something absolutely liberating about branded content – especially in this form,” director Lena Beug told Adweek. “This is storytelling outside the confines of the 30-second spot, and really it’s just supposed to entertain. The brief was minimal, and I loved having the freedom to shape the story and the narrative.”

PBS had nothing to do with the viral video in which Sesame Street’s Elmo is laid off due to President Trump’s budget cuts (but “Elmo has pre-existing conditions,” cries the distressed puppet). So said PBS CEO Paula Kerger on Friday, but that doesn’t mean the video doesn’t resonate. “The president’s budget proposes to make America great again,” Kerger told a Detroit business group. “I strongly believe PBS and its member stations are part of what makes America great.” But back to the video about Sesame Street characters losing their jobs. “What about the kids?” Elmo asks the unseen hatchetman, who replies, “The kids have YouTube.”

TBS Digital ordered 7 episodes of comedic series One Deeper Talks, featuring DJ Dillon Francis interviewing – as his German alter ego DJ Hanzel  renowned DJs like Calvin Harris and Kaskade.

GOING GLOBAL

Everything’s not coming up roses for Turkey’s dating shows. Despite their popularity, “There are some strange programmes that would scrap the institution of family, take away its nobility and sanctity,” said Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus in an interview. Officials met with reps from TV channels on Thursday to discuss stricter regulations.

UK-based distributor DCD Rights has secured a deal with SundanceTV Global for international drama Acceptable Risk for multiple territories including Central and Eastern Europe, Dutch Speaking Benelux, Iberia, Latin America, MENA, Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
