IN THE NEWS

Here comes the judge, albeit one without a law degree. 2008 vice presidential candidate and former Alaska governor Sarah Palin has signed a deal with production company Warm Springs to host and star in a daytime courtroom reality show in the Judge Judy vein, and will shoot a pilot to sell to a network. The team working on the project includes executives who developed Judge Judy and Judge Joe Brown.

In other TV courtroom news, Amy Freisleben has been named co-executive producer of Judge Judy and Hot Bench. “Amy sets a standard of excellence and professionalism unrivaled in this business of television,” said Judge Judy Sheindlin. “Shehas been with the Judge Judy’family for 18 years and I am thrilled that she has grown along with our program.” Freisleben had been executive in charge of production for both programs.

For the first time in Showtime history, the network is holding a special launch, releasing all six episodes of new comedy Dice at once to its subscribers. The series will be available on Sunday, April 10 at 12a with its linear premiere airing at 9:30p. “With its six episode run, we feel this comedy is ideally suited to being consumed all at once,” said Gary Levine, president of programming, Showtime Networks Inc. “We’re always looking for new ways to make our programming stand-out, and we’re confident that a ‘Dice binge’ will appeal to both fans and skeptics alike, and help spread the word about this very funny new Showtime series.”

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced its nominations for this year’s BAFTA TV Craft Awards, which honor behind-the-scenes talent. Wolf Hall leads with six nods, including Best Costume Design, Editing, and Writer. Sky Atlantic’s Fortitude, BBC One‘s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, and Working Title/BBC Two’s London Sky each garnered four, while ITV’s The Sound Of Music Live! received three nods.

Founder and CEO of VICE Media, Shane Smith, has been named Cannes Lions 2016 Media Person of the Year. The award recognizes innovators who have shaped the future of media. “Shane is an influential figure in today’s media landscape. Not only is he responsible for taking VICE, which started life as a punk magazine, and expanding it to become the world’s leading global youth media company, but also, beyond this, he’s a critically acclaimed journalist,” said Philip Thomas, CEO, Lions Festivals.
