03.01.17 Good morning. It’s Wednesday March 1, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
ESPN announced plans for Champ Week featuring coverage during a record-171 men’s college basketball conference tournament games running across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNEWS, SEC Network and ESPN3 starting today and running through March 12, a tripleheader on March 11 that will feature title games from the Big 12 (6p), ACC (9p) and Pac-12 (11p). Today will see four America East quarterfinal games on ESPN3. The schedule includes a total of 336 men’s and women’s basketball games including 297 exclusive contests. College GameDay Covered by State Farm will originate from the New York Life ACC Basketball Tournament in Brooklyn on March 11 on ESPN at noon with on-site studio coverage also present at the Big 12 and SEC tournaments.
In women’s basketball, ESPN announced that its 2017 Champ Week will see a record 165 women’s basketball games with more than 20 conferences playing on television and digital platforms. Five conference champions to be crowned on ESPN2, including our champions will punch their ticket to the NCAA Women’s Championship on Sunday, March 5. Analyst Andy Katz will join host Chris Cotter on March 4, for the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament semifinal while host Maria Taylor and analysts Rebecca Lobo and Andy Landers will be joined by Charlie Creme for coverage of several tournaments on ESPN2, including the AAC, ACC, SEC, and Pac-12.
Additional Champ Week coverage through “ESPN3 Surround” – a second-screen initiative – will offer an alternative viewing experience to the traditional telecast with different camera angles and audio on all games on ESPN networks from the ACC, American, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC.
The beginning of Women’s History Month today will see espnW kick off a slate of dedicated original content and programming built around the theme of “Women Making History.” To launch the commemoration, espnW’s new film, When I Play, will premiere just before 8a on SportsCenter and Mike & Mike. Today will also see a slate of female voices across each of its shows over the course of 24 hours, beginning with the 7a edition of SportsCenter and including First Take, Mike & Mike, The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz, OTL, Around the Horn and more. News, analysis and perspective ranging from the day’s news to the latest headlines in the NFL, NBA and MLB will be delivered by Michelle Beadle, Doris Burke, Cari Champion, Jemele Hill, Suzy Kolber, Sarina Morales, Rachel Nichols, Wendy Nix, Ramona Shelburne, Sarah Spain, and others. Elsewhere this month, ESPN will present more than 140 hours of live women’s events programming across its linear networks, including all 32 games of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, beginning March 17.
FOX Sports announced that it will carry all SheBelieves Cup matches for the first time ever, anchored by a battle between the Americans and England on the FOX broadcast network. Coverage of the four-team women’s international tournament begins today at 4p with England/France on FOX Sports GO and continues on FS1 with US/Germany. Broadcasters for the tournament include JP Dellacamera and Aly Wagner with Jenny Taft reporting from the sidelines.
Sugar Ray Leonard is heading to Showtime Championship Boxing on CBS on Saturday for Garcia/Thurman. The live broadcast will be produced by Showtime Sports and live on CBS from 9-11p. Leonard will join host Brian Custer, play-by-play voice Mauro Ranallo, International Boxing Hall of Fame analyst Al Bernstein and reporter Jim Gray on Saturday.
Elsewhere, former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz is lined up to join analyst Joe Rogan and blow-by-blow announcer Jon Anik to call UFC 209: Woodley vs. Thompson 2 on March 4 at 8p. In addition, retired UFC contenders Kenny Florian and Brian Stann work as desk analysts with host Karyn Bryant for the FS1 UFC 209 Weigh-In, Prefight and Postfight Shows from FOX Sports.
FOX Sports detailed more upticks from Daytona Speedweeks, with audience spikes that garnered the largest average audience for Speedweeks in FS1 or SPEED history. FOX Sports programming and FS1 combined during Speedweeks marked a 14% average viewership increase over 2016, hitting 463,000 with FS1’s average audience up 28% to hit 276,000 over last year. Meanwhile, Saturday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series race scored a 6% increase in average viewership, scoring 2,253,000 with an 8% bump among A18-49 over the 2016 race.
Golf Channel and NBCUniversal International Distribution announced two new distribution agreements in Japan, one with AbemaTV and the other with linear TV platform WOWOW. AbemaTV’s golf stream will feature Golf Channel programming that includes: tournament coverage of the LPGA and European Tour, as well as a slate of news and instruction programming, including Golf Central, The Golf Fix and Golf Channel Academy. WOWOW will significantly expand its coverage of LPGA Tour events for its nearly 3 million subscribers while Golf Channel’s production of all North American LPGA events will provide support to WOWOW’s golf programming.
YES Network and Comcast announced the return of YES to Xfinity as of March 31. YES will be re-launched in the areas in which it was previously carried, and Xfinity customers will be able to watch the March 31 Yankees/Braves pre-season game on ghd channel at 7:30p.
Meanwhile, SNY reports that UConn’s record breaking year has handed the network with double digit rating increases in Hartford-New Haven market across all of its prominent UConn Women’s Basketball programming, marking the highest total viewership in the area since the 2012-2013 season. Game broadcasts on SNY averaged a 6.00 household rating in Hartford-New Haven, up 21% versus the 2015-2016 season.
The National Sports Media Association Board of Directors voted to move the NSMA’s operations to Winston-Salem starting April, 2017. Based in Salisbury since its founding in 1959, the NSMA is now planning on holding its 58th annual awards weekend in Winston-Salem, from June 25-26.

Battlefields To Ballfields, a new foundation that provides scholarships to veterans of the United States Armed Forces to get integrated back into their community through officiating debuted yesterday, led by President and Executive Director Mike Pereira. “Many veterans find it difficult to successfully integrate into civilian life after they have completed their military service,” Pereira, currently the FOX Sports football rules analyst and a former NFL Vice President of Officiating, said. “We know there’s no greater sacrifice one can make than to serve one’s country. “But what happens when they come home? What ‘Battlefields To Ballfields’ will offer is the financial backing, training and eventual placement necessary for our service men and women to pursue careers in athletic officiating.”
Willow TV acquired exclusive media rights in the US for the VIVO IPL 2017 Twenty20 tournament. The 10th season of the VIVO IPL 2017 begins on April 5 with the tournament featuring 60 matches, played over 47 days in multiple venues across India. Willow will provide live coverage of all 60 matches, culminating with the final on May 21.
The Dota 2 Asia Championships will return from April 1-4, taking place at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai. This will mark the second time the event has taken place, with the first hosted in February 2015, according to ESPN.com.
Team Dignitas locked in their first all-female CSGO team, picking up Selfless Gaming’s squad. The team consists of Emmalee “emuhleet” Garrido, Lynnie “artStar” Noquez, Mounira “Goosebreeder” Dobie, Amanda “rain” Smith, Catherine “Cath” Leroux and Heather “sapphiRe” Garozzo. The team will compete in international coed and all-female CSGO competitions and debut under the Team Dignitas banner at the Intel Challenge hosted at IEM Katowice in Poland this week.
Mary Ann Turcke was named President, Digital Media and NFL Network. She had served since April 2015 as President of Bell Media, where she successfully led Canada’s largest media company and was responsible for their flagship television channels and will now be responsible for leading the operations of the NFL Network, as well as overseeing NFL owned and operated media assets including NFL Films, NFL Digital and NFL.com.
