Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 26, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

CBS Sports and Turner Sports lined up its talent roster for the tandem’s fourth straight year of combined coverage of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. The networks’ announcer lineup includes new roles that will include Greg Anthony moving courtside as an analyst and calling his first Final Four and National Championship game, while Ernie Johnson hosts Final Four and National Championship coverage for the first time. Anthony joins Jim Nantz and reporter Tracy Wolfson through the Regional Finals, before teaming with Steve Kerr, Nantz and Wolfson to call the Final Four and Championship. In addition, Andrew Catalon joins as a play-by-play announcer, teaming with Mike Gminksi and Otis Livingston, to call second and third round action. Studio coverage will see Johnson host with analysts Charles Barkley, Clark Kellogg and Kenny Smith. They will be joined by Greg Gumbel along with analysts Reggie Miller, Seth Davis, Grant Hill, Doug Gottlieb and college coaches.

The action begins Tuesday, March 18, with the NCAA First Four on truTV presented by Northwest Mutual.


NBC Olympics reports that more Americans experienced the company’s presentation of the XXII Olympic Winter Games from Sochi, Russia than ever before for a Winter Olympics. Overall, the Games generated 242.3 million media exposures across the platforms of NBCUniversal, up 3.5 million over 2010 for Vancouver. NBC’s primetime Olympics telecasts averaged 21.4 million viewers, a 12.3 rating/20 share and a 5.5 rating among Adults 18-49, per Nielsen. In addition, more than 76% of US television homes tuned in for some portion of the games for a total television reach of 178 million American viewers, according to fast cume data. Around the dial on NBCSN, each day of the channel’s Olympic slate was more viewed than its coverage of the 2012 London Olympics in the comparable 6a-3p time period, with the channel averaging 1.6 million viewers. The company also reports that its digital platforms drew nearly 62 million unique users (61.8 million), marking a record for a Winter Olympics with 10.8 million hours of video consumed.

Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association announced that MLB Network has been selected to serve as the national telecast partner for the MLB Opening Series Sydney between the Diamondbacks and Dodgers. In addition, Nine Network, the highest-rated Australian network, will simulcast the two games in Australia while long-time MLB International partner, ESPN, will simulcast the games to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, Latin America and the Caribbean. The games will be played on March 22nd and 23rd. Matt Vasgersian and John Smoltz take the broadcast booth with commentary from Ian Chappell of Nine Network.

Floyd Mayweather announced the third of his six-fight deal with Showtime Networks, selecting WBA Welterweight World Champion Marcos "El Chino" Maidana as his opponent. The fight will take place on Saturday, May 3, on PPV.

NASCAR and CIE, the leading live entertainment company in Latin America and third biggest live entertainment promoter of the world, locked in a 10-year landmark agreement for the Mexico-based Toyota Series to continue to operate under the NASCAR banner through the 2023 season. NASCAR and OCESA have established the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series as the national championship for racing in the country. The series traditionally runs a 15-race schedule, and for the second year in a row will kick off the season at Phoenix International Raceway.

Post-Olympics, NBC Sports brings back NHL regular-season coverage this week, highlighted by a Penguins/Blackhawks matchup in the NHL Stadium Series at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday at 8p on NBC that marks the first-ever NHL regular season game slated for primetime on the channel. Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick, analyst Eddie Olczyk and Pierre McGuire will have the call from Soldier Field in Chicago. In addition, NBC will kick off Sunday’s Hockey Day In America tripleheader coverage starting at noon with the Flyers and Caps. 

Meanwhile, NHL Revealed: A Season Like No Other returns this week with an Olympic-themed two-hour episode on NBCSN. Debuting tomorrow at 10p, the series takes fans to Sochi to tell the untold story this year’s Olympic hockey tournament, showcasing players mic’ed up on the ice for practice and spending time with their families as they participate in this Olympic experience. Viewers also will travel inside the locker room with the Canadian team moments after they captured the Gold.

Pac-12 Networks announced plans to deliver coverage of the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Tournament along with additional original programming in preparation for the NCAA tournament. Postseason action begins Thursday, March 6 at noon PT from Seattle. The channels enlisted Anne Marie Anderson and Tammy Blackburn, Krista Blunk and Mary Murphy to rotate broadcasting duties for the tournament while Jill Savage will be the sideline reporter. Host Ashley Adamson and analysts Ros Gold-Onwude and Ann Schatz will contribute pre, half and postgame analysis from Pac-12 Networks’ San Francisco studios while WNBA star Nneka Ogwumike will make her broadcasting in the studios during the semifinals. In addition the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Selection Show will air Monday, March 17 at 7p.

Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith is teaming with Budweiser, the Official Beer of Major League Baseball, in a quest to make Opening Day a national holiday, beginning with a petition launched yesterday at WhiteHouse.gov. In order for MLB Opening Day to be considered for a day of national observance, the petition needs 100,000 signatures within 30 days to warrant Administration review and a response from the White House. Budweiser will launch a complimentary campaign, complete with an online video series featuring Smith and digital advertising buys across such platforms as ESPN.com and MLB.com.

Bellator MMA entered a deal with Monster Energy to make the brand the "Official Energy Drink Partner" of the promotion. The multi-year deal kicks off Friday during Bellator’s Season 10 Premiere where the brand will be strategically integrated throughout the Bellator live event experience. Monster will own highly visible inventory inside the Bellator cage and activate at various consumer touch points in-arena. In addition, Monster is extending their Monster Girl program with a marquee position in sponsoring the Bellator Girls. In addition, Monster expanded its athlete roster with the addition of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson to its stable of athletes.


Red Bull Media House revealed that Red Bull TV will become the latest app to be added to the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. Offering programming from the world of Red Bull, including live global events as well as an extensive selection of sports, music and lifestyle entertainment, the app allows users to curate their playlists for continuous play. Live program offerings on Red Bull TV have expanded for 2014 with events that include the first stop of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship Series in Abu Dhabi on March 3 and Red Bull Crashed Ice: Moscow.

MLBAM debuted a new MLB.com At Bat across iPhone, iPad, Android, etc.. For the third year, MLB.TV Premium subscribers again will receive At Bat 14 for free, while fans can also subscribe to MLB.com At Bat 14 for the one-time annual fee of $19.99, covering the entire season. Spring Training features include over 200 games live, league-wide scoreboards and batter-by-batter action, as well as breaking news.


Silver Chalice, a creator of digital video content for top sports and media rights holders, announced that Dan Scalia was promoted to Senior Vice President of Business Development, while Brian Maddox will join the company as Vice President, Advertising Sales. Scalia was previously Vice President of Sales for the Midwest, while Maddox was most recently with the WWE as Vice President of Global Digital Sales.
