CYNOPSISSPORTS
02.04.16

Good morning. It’s Thursday February 4, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

FOX Sports nabbed English-language rights to the Mexican National Team in the US via a deal that runs through the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The deal comes between Fox Sports and Univision Deportes, and will see FS1 now carry all El Tricolor home matches, including the qualifier between Mexico and the US from the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City should both teams advance in World Cup qualifying. The team first appears on FS1 on Feb. 10, with Mexico/Senegal, as part of the annual Mexican National Team U.S. tour. Univision Deportes keeps Spanish-language rights for the squad.

ON THE AIR

Facebook revealed that – in a move to “better understand the connection between TV tune-in and activity” on the platform  it tapped the services of Nielsen to examine the relationship between social activity on Facebook during NFL games and live TV ratings. Looking into nine, nationally-broadcast, regular season games in Oct. and Nov., the companies found that 15 minutes before the kickoff, Shares and Posts delivered a “strong estimator” of the first-minute TV audience, noting that an increase of one Post within the 15 minute period before the game correlated to approximately 250 additional viewers in the first minute, while an additional Share correlated to 1,000 viewers in the same time frame.

Sunday’s The Super Bowl Today will feature Seal and Sam Hunt headlining the Super Bowl 50 NFL Tailgate Party. The NFL previously announced that Coldplay would be among the artists headlining the Pepsi Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show.

Starting this month, she will broaden her role as an LA-based reporter and analyst on SportsCenter as well as serve as a regular contributor on ESPN’s new NBA series The Jump. Shelburne will also make appearances on shows across ESPN networks like Around the Horn, Pardon the Interruption, Outside the Lines, SportsNation, and NBA Tonight as well as write for espnW in addition to teaming with Michelle Beadle for the upcoming national radio show, Beadle & Shelburne, which will premiere Feb. 21.

Bounce TV’s latest edition of Premier Boxing Champions  The Next Round on Sunday ranked as the series’ most-watched telecast to date among young male audiences for the network. The program averaged 418,000 total viewers during the 9-11:26p run and saw gains among: Households (+53%), Persons 18-49 (+63), P25-54 (+62%),Men 18-34 (+760), M18-49 (+94%), M25-54 (+80%) and P2+ (+71%).

DishLATINO is set to serve up ESPN Deportes in high-definition, just ahead of the channel’s broadcast of Super Bowl 50 on Sunday. “By offering ESPN Deportes in HD to DishLATINO customers, we are addressing demand to increase HD penetration of Spanish-language sports networks to a growing Hispanic fan base,” said Sean Breen, Senior Vice President, Affiliate Sales, Disney & ESPN Media Networks. “Watching live sporting events in HD heightens and enhances the viewing experience for fans, and today’s launch is yet another example of how we are working closely with our distributors to add value to their customers’ pay TV subscriptions.”

Sports Illustrated is taking to TV to unveil the 2016 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover model. The company is teaming with IMG and TNT to debut Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2016 on Feb. 13 at 10:30p with Nick Cannon and Rebecca Romijn hosting the festivities, which will celebrate the likes of Nina Agdal, Irina Shayk, Chrissy Teigen, Gigi Hadid,Emily DiDonato, Erin Heatherton, Chanel Iman and more. The special will honor Elle Macpherson with the Jule Campbell Award in recognition of her iconic modeling career and business acumen. Supermodel Chrissy Teigen will present the award to Macpherson.

Arena Football League has its television schedule for its 2016 season on ESPN. Overall, eight regular-season games will be carried by ESPN2, while nearly 40 games will be streamed live on ESPN3. This season, ESPN will serve up each round of the AFL postseason, including ArenaBowl XXIX, which runs Aug. 26 at 8p on ESPN. SPONSORSHIP & PROMOTION

The LPGA saw Acer renew its role as the Official Marketing Partner in the LPGA family and as the Official Tablet of the LPGA this tournament season. The deal sees players and caddies have the ability on each tee box to view an Acer tablet with a current leaderboard to see exactly where they stand in competition while fans can follow each hole-in-one and enter to win a sweepstakes on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #AcedIt.

First the Bradys, now Snickers is turning to Marilyn Monroe for its Super Bowl 50 spot. In a continuation of its "You’re Not You When You’re Hungry" campaign created by BBDO New York, the new ad will mirror the 1955 film "The Seven Year Itch," in which Monroe is transformed into actor Willem Dafoe when she is hungry. Eugene Levy also takes part as a stage hand who’s charged with the task of making Marilyn Monroe’s dress flap in the wind above a subway grate during the movie’s iconic scene."Super Bowl 50 is a celebration of this game’s amazing history, so we wanted to bring our A-game with a new ‘You’re Not You When You’re Hungry’ commercial that’s appropriately epic," said Allison Miazga-Bedrick, Snickers Brand Director. "It doesn’t get much bigger  or better  than combining one of the most legendary moments in movie history from the iconic Marilyn Monroe with some modern day icons of our own. We’re confident fans will be satisfied."

Levi’s is expanding its NFL Collection to include all 32 NFL teams this fall. In celebration of Super Bowl 50, limited-edition Levi’s Trucker jackets representing all teams are available now in select San Francisco retail locations before going wide later this year, featuring team logos and colors. “The NFL has some of the best fans in the world, and with this collection we’re able to help them elevate their gameday fashion without sacrificing their personal style,” said James Curleigh, Levi’s brand President. “We want each and every one of them to have access to gameday apparel that gets them just as excited about getting dressed as they are about cheering on their favorite team.”

DIGITAL & STREAMING

ESPN stamped its passport to China, announcing a deal with Tencent, one of China’s and the world’s leading providers of online products and services, that will see ESPN content localized and exclusively distributed and promoted by Tencent’s digital platforms in the country. Tencent’s live sports coverage and digital products in China will now offer exclusive Chinese-language (Mandarin) ESPN content that will be initially focused on the NBA and international soccer, with the potential to expand to other sports over the course of the agreement. When the NBC Playoffs tip off this season, ESPN experts will be on-site at five games per week to deliver exclusive, live Chinese-language analysis as part of Tencent’s NBA coverage. Meanwhile, Tencent will also license from ESPN the exclusive, live digital rights in mainland China to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament as well as over 100 regular season college basketball games and the X Games.

After a slate of technical issues hit the launch the NHL’s new digital properties earlier this week, MLBAM President Bob Bowman told Yahoo that the streaming issues from the platforms was a result of an issue with one of BAM’s Content Delivery Networks. “We had a glitch last night. The game states changed, the config went down, and by the time you re-launch another CDN, it takes 20-30 minutes to re-launch that thing,” Bowman told the site.
