Good morning. It’s Wednesday January 27, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
NBC Sports Group lined up its NASCAR programming plans for the 2016 season with races getting the green flag on Independence Day weekend, starting July 1 and 2 from Daytona. The company’s Sprint Cup 20-week slate will feature seven races on NBC, 12 races on NBCSN, with one race on USA Network (Aug. 7) thanks to this summer’s Olympic Games. Meanwhile, NASCAR XFINITY Series racing launches on July 1 at 7:30p on NBCSN with the field set to see four races on NBC, 12 races on NBCSN, two races on USA Network, and one race on CNBC. Rick Allen returns to the booth with Steve Letarte and Jeff Burton, while Krista Voda hosts pre- and post-race coverage with Dale Jarrett and analyst Kyle Petty.
It was a win for the debut of NBA Saturday Primetime on ABC presented by La Quinta last weekend, with the telecast notching the most-watched and highest-rated non-Christmas game of the regular season across all networks, according Nielsen. The Bulls win over the Cavaliers averaged 3.9+ million viewers with a 2.4 household rating. The new franchise pushed the network to win the night across prime-time broadcast and cable television on Saturday in all key adult and male demos, including 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54. Meanwhile, NBA Countdown, which preceded the game, averaged 2,437,000 viewers (p2+) and a 1.6 U.S. household rating.
Basketball also delivered for NBA TV on Monday night as the Warriors/Spurs handed the channel with an average of 1.4 million total viewers, which marks the network’s most-viewed telecast ever, even including playoffs. NBA TV’s total day audience and extended primetime viewership also set all-time records on Monday evening.
Nickelodeon is partnering with the NFL for Super Bowl 50, signing on to carry specially produced coverage of the events leading into the game. Launching Feb. 1, its “Nickelodeon at Super Bowl Week” will run across Nickelodeon, Nicktoons’ NickSports programming block, as well as appearing on the channels’ websites, social media and the Nick App. Content includes the NFL FLAG Championships special on Feb. 6 at 6p from NFL Films and Charlie Ebersol’s The Company; a new music video from Flo Rida featuring Nick’s iconic animated characters with a Super Bowl remix of his hit single “My House;” daily reports from the NFL Experience by Brec Bassinger and Coy Stewart, and social media takeovers by NFL athletes. Other highlights include a quartet of NFL Rush episodes and
David Feherty is teed up to make his live tournament debut as part of Golf Channel and NBC’s broadcast team at the Waste Management Phoenix Open from Feb. 4-7. Feherty will join Rich Lerner in the 18th tower as lead analyst for Golf Channel’s first and second round coverage Thursday-Friday before transitioning on the weekend to his on-course reporter role during Saturday-Sunday afternoon coverage on NBC, with Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller moving into the 18th tower position.
If Qatar is stripped of the 2022 World Cup following investigations, one candidate for the upcoming FIFA presidential elections stated that the US should host the tournament. ESPNFC.com reports that candidate Jerome Champagne told French radio outlet RTL that"It should not be a revote but apply the IOC’s legal precedent, giving the gold medal to the silver medalist," if country reps are found guilty.

NBC Sports Group’s Super Bowl plans will blanket San Francisco and run across NBC, NBCSN, NBC Sports Radio, NBCSports.com, NBC Sports Live Extra, and NBC Sports Group’s social media channels. Programming includes The Dan Patrick Show from the Observation Post at the Presidio weekdays at 9a on NBCSN, and Pro Football Talk (typically at 6p) from the Mosconi Center. Cris Collinsworth’s Sunday Night Football Special, meanwhile, will run on Jan. 31 at 1p on NBC with a look back at some of the best moments of the 2015 season.
Speaking of the Super Bowl, CBS Sports Network lined up a slate of college games featuring Peyton Manning and Cam Newton from their time at Tennessee and Auburn. Programming begins today at noon with Auburn/Alabama and continues tomorrow with Kentucky/Tennessee, whilethe 2010 SEC Championship and Arkansas/Auburn run Friday before concluding Saturday with LSU/Alabama.

Under Armour detailed its plans for a global partnership with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in a move that will see the actor create a range of products across footwear, apparel and accessories as well as support Under Armour’s Connected Fitness initiatives. The alliance will include development of original content, inspired by the actor’s lifestyle, fitness regimen, and philanthropic initiatives. Johnson will also play promote Under Armour’s Connected Fitness platforms including the recently debuted Under Armour HealthBox and Record application.
The quest for New York continues as UFC COO Lawrence Epstein and former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman, launched an upstate tour in support of legalizing MMA and regulating both professional and amateur MMA in the state, which marks last place in North America where professional MMA is illegal. Joining them at a news conference were sponsors of the legislation, including Assembly Majority Leader Joseph D. Morelle (D-Irondequoit) and Senator Joseph A. Griffo (R-Rome). “We have been at this fight for eight years to get New York to recognize and regulate the fastest growing sport in the world and we are confident that 2016 is the year,” Epstein said. “We thank Governor Cuomo for including it in his executive budget this year and, of course, our consistent appreciation of Senator Griffo and Assembly Majority Leader Morelle for their consistent support and efforts. Passing this bill is right for the sport, right for the fans, right for the athletes, right for the arenas, and right for New York.”
The NHL and MLBAM are serving up newly designed digital platforms for the league designed to offer hockey fans a better user experience across devices. The new-look NHL.com, NHL app and NHL.TV will launch over the weekend and a higher quality picture to match the HD viewing experience on a regular television by speeding to 60 frames per second streaming on the app.
Meanwhile, the NHL also announced a deal with the NHLPA and GoPro to extend their ties, with plans that include NHL After Dark, an 11-part series filmed and produced by GoPro that will offer hockey fans a look at what happens on the ice during after-hours training sessions. The series will be distributed on the GoPro Channel and the GoPro App, channels owned and powered by the NHL and the NHLPA, including the NHL Network, and the NHL App, YouTube, and on the social media channels of GoPro, the NHL and the NHLPA. “Our goal with the NHL After Dark series is to transport the hockey fan directly onto the ice with an up-close and personal look at some of the NHL’s most talented players,” said Bill McCullough, executive producer at GoPro. “These world-class athletes invest much of their time honing skills behind the scenes and we’re excited to give hockey fans an exclusive look at the personalities of these players, the fun they bring to the game and their commitment to mastering their craft.”
ESPN senior writer Dan Rafael inked a new, multi-year agreement to remain at ESPN as the company’s lead boxing multimedia reporter and columnist and will continue to serve as boxing writer and analyst for ESPN.com and all digital properties, contribute to ESPN The Magazine, and appear on SportsCenter and other ESPN television and audio shows.
Competitive gaming platform FACEIT locked in $15 million in Series A funding from investment firms Anthos Capital, Index Ventures, and United Ventures with the investment set to help the company grow its team and continue to build out its technology and platform. “With this round of funding, we will be able to further our three-pronged mission for a competitive gaming platform: a robust competitive community for players and organizers, an easy-to-implement competitive layer for developers, and custom offerings for brands, tied to their products and services,” said Niccolo Maisto, founder and CEO of FACEIT. “We’re also expanding our services to offer our partners the same tools that FACEIT has been using to engage players with competitions at scale.”
Digital network Machinima is bringing web docuseries Chasing the Cup to The CW. Following the efforts of Mortal Kombat X players this season, the series see its first four episodes run on CW Seed with the one-hour finale air on The CW on Feb. 15 at 8p.
