01.26.16 Good morning. It’s Tuesday January 26, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The latest round of Brady/Manning was a win for CBS Sports, as Sunday’s coverage of the AFC Championship game scored the highest rating for the AFC Championship game on any network in 30 years and was the second most-watched AFC Championship game on any network in 39 years. The matchup generated 53.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen, with a 29.3/51 in fat-national data. Streaming coverage also notched records, marking triple-digit growth in viewers and minutes streamed compared to last year’s AFC Championship game, with more than 1.2 million unique viewers consuming more than 89 million total minutes of coverage.
Around the dial, the NFC Championship blowout took the night among broadcast networks for FOX, scoring a 24.1/37 household rating/share and an average audience of 45.7 million viewers, according to fast national figures, off-pace from last year’s matchup but 7% higher than last year’s game in the primetime window. Charlotte led all markets with a 54.2/71 while Phoenix took third with a 43.9/65, both marking the highest postseason ratings ever for the FOX station in each market.
With the Broncos/Panthers now locked in to Super Bowl 50, NFL Network is scheduling a record 88 live hours of on-location coverage from San Francisco and the Bay Area for the game. The channel is tapping the talents of 36 on-air personalities for the festivities, with programming launching from the area on Feb. 1. Super Bowl Sunday coverage will showcase 10 hours of pregame and postgame programming starting at 9a with a special 8.5-hour edition of NFL GameDay Morning, presented by Scottrade.
Just ahead of the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star events, NBCSN serves up a primetime special in NHL All-Star Friday Night: Live in Music City, offering live roundtable discussions with NHL All-Star players, performances from top country music stars and “a few surprises.” The special is hosted by Kimberly Perry, lead singer of the Grammy Award and CMA Award-winning group The Band Perry, and NHL broadcaster Kathryn Tappen, and broadcast live from the Honda Stage at Bridgestone Winter Park in downtown Nashville on Friday at 8p.
Meanwhile, the NHL unveiled details of the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition, with six events that will run on NBCSN on Saturday at 7p. Conference captains will select the players that will take part in the events: Bridgestone NHL Fastest Skater; Honda NHL Breakaway Challenge; DraftKings NHL Accuracy Shooting; Gatorade NHL Skills Challenge Relay; AMP Energy NHL Hardest Shot; and Discover NHL Shootout.

Set to carry all 31 LPGA Tour event in 2016, NBC Sports tees off on the new season this week with the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic on Golf Channel starting Thursday. Judy Rankin returns as lead analyst this year and will be joined by Whit Watson as play-by-play host for the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic. “Golf Channel’s coverage of the LPGA Tour last year was fueled by the most live hours ever, showcasing the game’s emerging and established stars through storytelling via our news, live tournaments and digital platforms,” said Molly Solomon, Golf Channel executive producer. “We will continue to build on this momentum as we embark on a momentous year in 2016 on the LPGA Tour with 10 months of coverage of the Race to the CME Globe, nearly all of the major championships and the UL International Crown as well as golf’s return to the Olympics.”
Yahoo Sports Radio picked up Legendary Coaches, a weekly radio program hosted by Chris Childers that will be carried on Yahoo! Sports Radio’s broadcast and digital platforms starting Feb. 13 as part of wider-ranging deal with KMG Networks. The deal expands the current two-hour broadcast to include the addition of a Monday through Friday feature, podcasts, and the embedding of audio content throughout the entire Yahoo! Sports Radio platform.

FOX Sports is revving up for the 58th running of the Daytona 500 on Feb. 21 with a rolling marketing campaign targeting the social aspect of celebrating the race with family and friends. The campaign features a “Happy Daytona Day” anthem that premiered on Sunday, while an LA “Police Chase” spot featuring company rookie Jeff Gordon and The Simpsons celebrating Daytona Day are also on the schedule. “Not unlike the phenomenon surrounding events like the Super Bowl and the Kentucky Derby, the Daytona 500 and its fans have their own set of rituals and traditions for the opening race of the NASCAR season,” said Robert Gottlieb, EVP of Marketing for FOX Sports. “We saw this as an opportunity to amplify that atmosphere to a whole new level.”
CAA Sports picked up brandrapport, a London-based sports marketing agency that works with brands such as Allianz, Jaguar Land Rover, Nestle, Prudential, and Samsung, offering insights from brand engagement strategy to activation, PR, event management, digital & social media. brandrapport’s 25 employees will now join CAA Sports Consulting, and be based in CAA’s London office in Hammersmith. Andy Kenny will serve as Head of CAA Sports Consulting London, guiding the team’s efforts in the U.K.
ESPN laid out its slate of sponsors for this year’s X Games Aspen, which runs Jan. 28-31. New to the scene will be AT&T, Coors Light, Intel and LifeProof who join veterans America’s Navy, GoPro, Harley-Davidson, Jeep brand and Monster Energy. Additional sponsors include Oakley, Polaris, Skype and Xbox. First-year sponsor Coors Light will entitle the Coors Light Skier X Men’s and Women’s competitions. Intel will showcase its technology offering data-powered insights at the competition.
The NBA named the Warriors and Raptors as the recipients of the NBA Retail Awards, honoring the best practices in team merchandise sales and operations. The Raptors received the honor after renovating its Team Store at Air Canada Centre to include advanced retail technology and innovative fixtures and merchandising, while the Warriors achieved record-breaking sales from the 2015 NBA Playoffs through the start of the 2015-16 regular season by using enhanced point-of-sale technology and expanding its in-market retail presence.
WWE is partnering with Boys & Girls Clubs of America for a multi-year, national partnership designed to boost youth development at local Clubs across the country. The new partnership focuses on bullying prevention efforts around Be a STAR, WWE’s anti-bullying initiative, and will see WWE Superstars and Divas participate in anti-bullying rallies at local Clubs across the U.S. WWE will also tap its global platforms to generate awareness and raise funds for the organization.
The New York Knicks, New York Rangers and New York Liberty announced a multi-year marketing partnership with Resorts World Casino New York City that will see the brand become the presenting sponsor of the venue’s Blue Seats, and a “History of the Blue Seats” exhibit will be on display in the Blue Seats section. Resorts World Casino New York City will get brand exposure at The Garden during all Knicks, Rangers and Liberty games via in-arena identification signage at the Blue Seats, in-arena LED signage, features on Gardenvision, digital and social media sweepstakes, alumni appearances, designation as the Presenting Partner of New York Liberty Pride Month and branding on the Liberty Mega T-shirt machine.

ONE World Sports locked in an expanded partnership with Verizon that will see some of the network’s popular sports programming to the go90 platform. The deal also launched the network in HD on Fios TV and offers “TV Everywhere” authentication to Fios TV customers. go90 users will get access to global sports carried on ONE World Sports. “Verizon understands the appeal and impact of live sports delivered perfectly on multiple platforms,” said Randy Brown, ONE World Sports Executive Vice President, Distribution. “As our partnership with Verizon has grown, it has become apparent how much Verizon appreciates the power of global sports in connecting with an increasingly multicultural millennial audience and values our ability to provide the highest quality sports programming, wherever their viewers are.”
